I don’t think we have many movie stars today. They don’t sell movies anymore. The studios made stars back then.

Soul diva, Panama Smith's ( Glady George)'s observations of 'fool in love' Cagney( Eddie Bartlett's ) slide into disrepair is deeply moving. Two of my favourite performances from any era.. Raoul Walsh was a mater of this type of material. So much ground covered in under two hours...

Just received my copy today, finished watching it and I must say Bravo! I only had it as part of the WB James Cagney 4-film DVD from years back which looked quite nice upscaled, as most of those DVDs do, but this release is miles ahead and it’s LPCM mono sounds sharp and clear, especially the vintage gunfire Bangs of that era!😎

I’m glad you’re enjoying the 4K! It’s a great release, I always appreciate when they can improve everything and not sacrifice anything to do it. The classic gunfire sounds are great!!

I’m very pleased with the Audio and Video of this disk but sorely disappointed by its lack of bonus material, even by Criterion standards. I was hoping to see documentaries on James Cagney and/or features on that era of gangster films made by WB. There’s some great bonus stuff on Bogart in his WB home releases and even cartoon parodies of his films😎
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia 2 месяца назад
I have to admit Criterion definitely puts less Bonus features in their new releases. I notice this more when I buy 4K upgrades from their previous stuff and it’s way more packed with Bonus Materials then new films added to their collection.

I’m ordering it from Amazon now at $23.68 along with Carlito’s Way 4K, both filling up the gangster category on my shelf nicely! This title should also satisfy my Criterion wishlist for now😎

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I’m really impressed by how great these WB B&W films look in 4K, starting with Casablanca and Maltese Falcon. The HDR adds so much eye-popping texture. Aside from Citizen Kane, now I’m waiting for the other RKO classic King Kong in 4k!

@nickchang5293 I assume we’ll get King Kong at some point. Weee getting the 70s one so why not the classic lol. When people say Black and white is useless on 4K clearly don’t understand HDR lol

My favorite epics? How about the three "P's" by director Franklin J. Schaffner? That would be "Planet of the Apes (1968) Patton (1971) and Papillon (1973) three films was wonderous in scope and color, fulled the imagination and satisfied the curious. The scores to all three films was memorable in every way composed by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. I would consider each film an epic and well worth the price of admission.
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia 4 месяца назад
You’re not wrong at all! All three of those are great films. Planet of the Apes especially for the time looks great, Sounds Great and the makeup is still really good. Hopefully that gets an upgrade to 4K blu ray this year. George C. Scott is incredible in Patton!

This one is definitely on my wishlist for the next Criterion sale at B&N! This film with Bogart and Cagney to me is like DeNiro and Pacino in Heat, and speaking of which, they gotta do White Heat on 4K, my favorite Cagney flick! He was as explosive and vulgar in it as Pacino was in Scarface😎
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia

You’re actually the second person to bring up White heat and it coming to 4K. I’m hoping this sold well enough that we get it. I’ve actually thought about this movie a lot since I saw it.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I think WH is one of the quintessential Cagney gangster flicks, and his triumphant comeback to the genre. It also had so many elements that was way ahead of its time, starting with a daring train robbery, the police vehicular and undercover surveillance on him in prison and his volatile behavior leading to his explosive demise. Also Interestingly he initially didn’t want to work with Raoul Walsh again on this film, since having done Roaring 20s together 10yrs prior.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia For sure! I’ll pick up the Blu-ray based upon your review and save that $5. Was trying to pick up Cure as well but as soon as I was checking out with my second order it went out of stock. I probably will be passing on Peeping Tom as I remember not caring for the film too much on the first watch. Kind of hoping we get some heavy hitters from Criterion this year like Eyes Wide Shut.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia By the way, I just joined the criterion subreddit and I must say, criterion collectors are some of the bougiest (hope that’s the right spelling) movie collectors out there. A lot of gate keeping and smack talking about other films that they feel are below the criterion status. I thought it would be more of film appreciation as a whole. I’ve seen several posts about film suggestions and it’s constantly a bunch of folks bashing the original poster about even suggesting it in the first place. It’s probably unpopular but I’ve seen quite a few criterion films that didn’t work for me and one of which that comes to mind, Pink Flamingos, that I pretty much hated. It’s quite a different experience on the other 4K or Blu-ray subreddits.

@mgehani90 I think your right about Eyes wide shut. This is it’s 25th anniversary and I can’t think of a better year then this to bring it to 4K. I hope Criterion is the ones that get to do it too!
