The first week of 2023 has been quite the chaotic one in the Rocket League community. From bots infiltrating the ranked system, to content creators being accused of viewbotting, to a huge portion of the bubble scene being permanently banned, there's no shortage of stuff to talk about right now.

In this video I briefly cover a couple of the big stories that have happened recently in the Rocket League community, but focus on one of them particularly. A decent portion of the semi-pro Rocket League scene in NA was just permanently banned for having something called a tradelocked alpha boost on their accounts. I explain what that means and why it's bannable and discuss the future of the these players' careers.

Psyonix made a statement about the bans! Here's the reddit thread going over the situation www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeague/comments/10jvnbu/update_on_alpha_boost_account_bans/ TL;DR Psyonix has decided to unban the accounts but still remove the Tradelocked Alpha Boosts. So the bubble players can continue competing in competitive Rocket League events!

@@rubberducky5990 Not entirely true. Devs HAVE done hardware bans before, and I imagine with enough accounts created the devs would be able to track down the person creating the accounts to avoid the perma-ban. Plus, any items accrued on the original account would be totally lost forever.

I don't quite understand outrage about bots in ranked. Far as I can see it mainly impacts the account that's botting. I don't see this significantly shifting people's ranks (if that even matters) unless it shifts everyone's ranks at once (same as having no effect.) If you're an 'unfortunate' lower rank it's similar to playing a Smurf which has been widespread for a long time.

I feel like the item trading and general security system in Rocket League needs a serious overhaul, if not then these kinds of stuff won't stop happening. Think about it, we literally have bots playing legit ranked matches which if put in to comparison is honestly equivalent to aim-botting in FPS games. Also for the trade bans, if they had just removed the scam victim's traded item from the scammers inventory then none of this abomination of ban waves would've happened. Then again I think they probably have limited resources and time for general optimization patches in Rocket League considering they're working on porting the game to UE5.

Except, how can you be sure that the receiving the item is the scammer and not the scammed? What if it was sold and paid for through an external means? They both should've been trade locked and this would've been a better solution.

Yeah true I definitely think they need to adjust the way they ban accounts and enforce security in general, But regardless, I don’t expect scammers and hackers to be completely removed from the game any time soon. It’s a constant arms race where Psyonix has to address each hack or scam as they come up. Pretty hard to predict bots invading ranked when it’s been clean for 7 years 😂 Hopefully they just put up the necessary precautions after resolving this to prevent it from happening again. For me, it’s really the repeated mistakes from them that get me kinda annoyed.

Put into criminal terms, "borrowing" an alpha boost is essentially laundering contraband, giving it a "legitimate" source. Unfortunately for the scammers, digital stuff probably carries a digital identifier, making it easily traceable through the (closed) system. Therefore, everyone that EVER touched it is now tainted and easily banned.

You're not wrong. They either broke TOS or their friend who let them use alpha boost did. This is just like what would happen in real life - guilty by association. So I think that instead of being mad at psyonix for banning them, they should be mad at their friends. And for those directly involved... They have no reason to be upset lol.

They want it to remain ambiguous so they can ban whoever they want and then mysteriously say they violated some mysterious rule that they won't expand upon. It's how all these social media things operate now. They aren't on your side.

I have also just played a bot Wayton and i have video footage of it, too. Also, they left immediately after the match started. The player had terrible mechanics for my rank, c3, and kept backflipping whenever going for aerials and hadn't hit a single aerial for the 2 games i played it.

On the bans, I wonder if psyonix even knew how broadly the fake alpha accounts were spread, maybe they meant to ban 30 accounts with specific characteristics but instead it ended up being 1000 accounts that matched those characteristics? Also I remember this coming up in a Leth video where he OBVIOUSLY knew something was being done about it but didnt say much.

It was possibly farther back than that, but I'm quite positive it was a fairly recent ranked with Retals video to at least narrow down the search. It was a brief discussion, though. Edit: I lied. I remembered the video. From 10 days ago titled "Rocket League should fix this EXPLOIT (...and fast).

Yeah him and Retals talk about it a bit. I think Retals is actually the one who brought up the locked alpha boost epic accounts and that people were buying them but Leth brought up the hack clients and faking items and stuff during online play. Edit: yeah same video you mention they talk a bit 6:20-7:20ish and Retals brings up the alpha boost accounts and that bubble players were buying them.

Didn't fully register what he meant at the time but after this vid I was like "awww damn!". Leth's reaction to Retals saying that also seemed like he was about to say something he knew but didn't.

You got it completely spot on. I won an epic with a trade locked alpha boost from a giveaway and linked the epic to my steam. Caught the perma ban but after I unlinked them epic. I was unbanned. Never knew the account I won was an exploit. Unfortunate

I ran into a bot too yesterday in a 1090 rated 1v1, super crazy once I figured out what was going on. It kept doing delayed kickoff dunks and once I figured out how to beat it, it was super easy, but still I was scared that it would hit perfect reads and perfect flicks. I looked up the account and the bot had gone from plat 2 to gc 2 in a few days in 1's. The account was called Jamesco you can look it up on RL tracker it has a white J as the pfp

I’m fed up with the bots in ranked!! The only easy way to score on them is from their delayed kickoff, but even then half the time I still get demoed or bumped off and then the bot just gets perfect ball control and flicks it right over my head right before I jump. It is beyond annoying. Every other game I was playing was against a bot. I have clips and replay files if anyone wants to take a look at the boys that I’ve been playing against. But yeah, the amount of bots in rocket league ranked around c3-gc1 is insane.

I followed the news lately about this Nexto bot, but never expected to see it in my ranked game (champ 3). He was even typing in chat while driving and playing... I experienced this a few days ago! I played in champ mmr and just assumed I met a GC smurf in ranked that had practiced flicks ALOT. But now I realize he was actually a bot. Every time he got the ball on his head, it was stuck there like it was glued. And he always reacted perfectly to whatever move I tried...

Why "borrow" something in the first place? Don't care about what pixels you have and play the game... They deserve it, if it helps against scammers. They should've been more careful when someone lends you something worth lots of money. Seems sus AF, and probably one way to make the scam-trail harder to follow. And who knows, they possibly knew that and took a cut, just so they could spend more time getting better in RL instead of spending time earning money.. Just my take as a low ranked diamond player (haven't played in 3-5 months tho), with terrible air control and bad defense.

I think that banning people should not be done without giving a clear direct reason why stating spisificly why there being banned it would be horrifying to log onto rocket league and see that I'm never able to play again with 0 explanation why and I'm sure that the players that where almost into rlcs felt that way more then I did dedicating most of there life to something and have it all shut down with no explanation

As someone that has 11 accounts because I keep getting banned because I refuse to hard carry people that sit afk, or chase constantly - Banning accounts now a day does NOTHING without effective measures in place to prevent new accounts from being made. The game's free, and that's the worst part about rocket league as a whole. I'd MUCH rather pay to play this game and have people that actually VALUE their account and time in the game playing it than have to deal with the shit I do now.

The title is a bit exaggerated because that's what you need to do on youtube. The community has been shook by these events, but I don't think it's anything permanent. Other games have hacks and dupes and don't die, the devs just have to stay patching them.

Would be nice to have something like smash bros where the bots can actually be hard to beat. It would make things nice to be able to mess around with a say champ bot and SSL bot in offline mode in exhibition. It is long over due imo.

I have an attacking concept for you that you might give a go. It's a tactic I used to train in hockey. When there are two attackers, at or passed the midfield, one left, one right, and 1 or 2 defenders, you can try to pass the ball from the left to the right or the other way around to juke the defenders and score on the other side. I hope it will work, it did in hockey so, and meaby it will be new meta, who knows. BTW I love your vids

The person you're playing probably bought the account. Although it doesn't seem like Nexto the way you described it. Nexto has precise flicks and doesn't often miss.

have actually played a few bots in ranked 2s and 3s now.. starting to get really annoying when im like trying to climb ranks.. sitting around Gc2 in 2s and Gc1 in 3s.. really eird when u meet a 3 man team where only 1 of them is a real person and the 2 others can't do aerials and stuff, only ground control and flicks on point.. and btw link to get the RLCS hoodie?:)

As someone who was once banned for 30 days - and to this day I STILL have no idea why I was banned - the customer support from Psyonix is worthless. You can go back and forth a hundred times and they will never tell you why you were banned or try to fix the situation. They will always just say: "I've confirmed that your ban was correctly placed. Bye now!"

to me the issue with speaking out the reasoning maybe because they dont have a perfect solution and to spill the beans would mean that the ones that are still unbanned for alphaboost thing would actually get away, its like with the fbi who will only speak out after the operation (for example the stuxnet virus) i think psyonix who are developing a new game to begin with and would need account linking systems between old and new rocketleague cannot do much to old rocket league in terms of perfecting resources soo they are trying to solve as many issues before the release and hence people cannot alpha boost duplicate and get it through new rocket league where its likely that the trade data wouldnt be accessible and hence they wiped their hands clean

I stopped playing about a month and a half ago. Matching making was so bad that I was getting paired against obvious trolls (teams of 3 that all had matching names). Now with all the bots and the ever-toxic teammates that nothing ever happens to... I'm done. 2,000 hours, done.

I feel like every rl item has a specific ID for each item and that's why so many people got banned at the same time, they could just find out which alpha boost was used for duping and who came into contact with them. (and that probably explains why some innocent people that had them were banned too)

Just a theory. The bots in ranked problem might be people selling GC accounts but instead of having to play themselves, they just set a bot to work and they get loads of free GC accounts to sell with almost no effort.

This situation has been insane. I got scammed once. I didn’t even realize I could make a support ticket years ago. But it makes sense that people exploited it. Glad they didn’t ban people who got suckered into it even if it was a big mistake of them

I have seen 3 types of Bots: 1. It's just pure nexto playing all the time 2. It's a mix, the player is playing when in the air or even in the ground, but all of a sudden they kinda start the cheat engine and it takes the ball on the roof and starts dribbling exactly like nexto and flicks. 3. Another one that goes for demos with all it's might, not all the time but maybe when the demo cheat starts.

I'm a silver who plays occasionally, and I've literally done nothing but play the game as intended (I haven't even bought credits or anything), and it's these ban videos that actually make me a bit worried that I'm going to be banned for no reason at some point. I know that's unlikely, but with the way things are escalating it doesn't seem like something totally out of question. Incredible video BTW. Very informative and well done. Editing was top notch, and it really helped enlighten us people who never use twitter and are totally clueless of the situation. Nice work. =]

You shouldn't worry, these bans were earned. No matter what the "victims" say. I own alpha boost and haven't been banned. Why ? Because i never traded it with anybody. If you are silver and dont own alpha items and are not getting boosted, you will never be banned :)

Personally, Wayton, I think we need people to go over the scenarios like the viewbot accusations more deeply. It is terrible to me that people will simply jump to one side of an argument and stay there. We've been conditioned to do this, so I think that anything you can do to call it out helps people think for themselves. People need to rationally hear both arguments, consider their own opinions, and decide for themselves. Just a thought o' mine.

I don't know if you've seen this part, Wayton, but Leth had a video with this stuff being brought up in it. Him and Retals we're playing 2v2 and a bunch of players were popping up that didn't have Alpha boost before. He was saying that there is an actual program that you could download that would actually put the items in your inventory. It was like BakkesMod but the items you equipped would actually show up.

There have been a couple mods that do things (no, rocket league wasn't "unhackable" before this, like many people claimed) but psyonix patched them pretty quickly. I don't think this was ever a widespread issue.

Imo... they really need to do more to crack down on the smurfing/ intentionally lower rank or queuing with lower rank friends. Sitting at around champ 2 for about a year now its getting out of control. The amount on my experience is insane. Basically every other game. I've had games facing champ 2 or champ 3 and they have a diamond or even a platinum player on their team. And then you see them carrying this player knowing that they are probably higher in rank than c2 and the other player not even knowing where they are on the field. It definitely gets frustrating. Especially when I have been pushing for GC for awhile now. If I'm the only person seeing this as an issue then I'll be quiet. But I know doing that is against ToS and was even talked about maybe a yr or 2 ago. And it just seems like nothing really happened. And as a player who can't spend hours a day playing with work/family/ stuff like that it gets frustrating just being stuck. Anyways, keep up the good work wayton. Not really I always get matched with the perfect ppl so there isn’t really a big gap in mechanics and matchmaking they did a perfect job with matchmaking

I totally agree with you about intentional SMURFS in competitive and even casual, but talking about high rank players sometimes playing with lower ones IN CASUAL, should be something completely free to do... just because of, you know: true FRIENDSHIPS also playing our favorite videogame... And what should be done for that case is to have a better matchmaking system, in order to balance your solo queue team with another random player around the level of the highest one in the opposite party.

At this point there has been bad actors in the scene for a while, so the actions psyonix has taken in the last few years is only increasing the safety of players when it comes to the shop and trading improvements. I do hope people who were indirectly associated do get help however

A couple of notes: 1. Psyonix does not owe players breaking terms of service an explanation for why they were banned. 2. Psyonix *does* owe the community at large explanations for mass-bans so that they don't get confused, and so that players accidentally caught in the crossfire can get help.

Agreed on the first part, they might just be lying about being innocent. The second part though? You'd be surprised how many people would do that kind of thing (e.g. borrowing Alpha Boost) just to flex for a while. Vanity is a serious issue, specially for younger kids, it wouldnt be a surprise at all if they were honestly just borrowing It to brag about having it (for a while at least, maybe for some Tik-tok clips or whatever)

It's always the value we humans give it. It doesn't matter what it is or isn't. The Alpha boost is a specific reward for people playing the alpha version, just like you have the white hat. Would be stupid to be able to purchase it in the shop, is like being able to purchase a trophy or season 7 GC rewards you know. They should have just made the aplha items untradable like other fixed rewards.

Doesn't matter how dedicated you are, if you break the ToS. I don't fault Psyonix for punishing them. Where Psyonix DOES mess up is in the lack of proper communication and transparency. This leads to extra, unnecessary controversy, that could've been avoided.

@@yurilopes420 Keep in mind that Psyonix hasn't come forward and actually told these players what is going on. Most of these players did the whole alpha boost thing a long time ago with no problems whatsoever. Now Psyonix permanently bans them, ENDING any hope they had at a career for an offense that is effectively a victimless crime, long after they did it. We don't even know for sure if this is actually why they got banned, because Psyonix never bothered to tell us. Sure what they did wasn't necessarily ethical, but Psyonix handled this in about the worst possible way that they could have.

So far in my road to GC in 1's I typically run across these bots once every 5-6 games. Its really bad. A good give away is the kick offs, the bots cant speed flip and typically dont dodge on kickoffs. I'm sure they're working on something over at Psyonix, what a wild time to be in the Rocket League scene

I wonder if the people who borrowed an alpha boost were used to launder the alpha boost from the scammer accounts? scammer has alpha boost, trades it to someone as a "borrow," reports that they were scammed, tells the borrower to trade it back to a different account, and gets the un-tradeable alpha boost on the original account.

It's funny only because a couple years ago my friend pranked me (he even made a video about it) where he took all my good items from my account and then I thought I was actually hacked and lost all my stuff so I submitted a support ticket. Psyonix literally told me they couldn't help me and wouldn't give me replacement items. Luckily I got them back shortly after because my friend gave them back to me, but it's interesting just how easy it was for these players to get the alpha boosts.

I played 2 bots yesterday i think, in C2. It was in 3s however and there were two of them that had the same name, just one number difference. The other guy in their party had a youtube gamertag. The bots had perfect ground dribbling and flicks, and had perfect 50s. Strange

I feel like people often forget that adding/removing/tweaking anything in a video game causes a butterfly effect very often. "make the bad guys go away, computer!" "what makes them bad?" "these things!" "On it." and now players that just HAPPEN to qualify for that ban are permabanned based on a set of identifiers that were set too vague by humans and instantly executed by a bot or whatever across their ENTIRE player base. Sound familiar?
