The Essential Mechanic That Pros REFUSE To Practice

There is an extremely valuable mechanic in Rocket League that pros know about but still refuse to practice. It's a basic fundamental that is far from being perfected by anyone but they still don't put time into improving it. Today I investigate and analyze exactly why that is.

Thanks to @Virge, @ShockRL, and @ExplosiveGyro for taking the time to chat with me! There is no single player in the world that has even come close to mastering shooting in Rocket League. But it turns out, there's a good reason for that. Shooting in Rocket League is one of the most difficult things to practice because it's just so repetitive and, put frankly, boring. However, practicing it clearly does have its upsides. I learned a lot this week from talking with these pros and coaches and experimenting with shooting practice for myself. I'm sure there are barely any people out there that have committed to shooting training in Rocket League as much as I did this week so hopefully you all learn something from this too!

Imo with improving shooting, it's not the shooting practice over and over again that's going to improve you, when you've played enough of the game you know how to hit the ball well. The tricky part is the positioning before the shot. Which makes the shot easy. Getting perfect rotations imo is the way to perfect shooting.
@markmurphy9121
@markmurphy9121 Год назад
I agree the microadjustments beforehand in positioning definitely determine what kind of power and angle you're gonna get long before you even touch the ball

@connorallan8080 Год назад
@@caieeosu like I say about flakes videos... To get fundamentals to that level is probably gonna take you longer than learning more mechanics as well as having a decent fundamental skill level. The way flakes plays relies on him never misreading a ball always having a near perfect first touch and having near perfect recoveries... That will probably take you 5k hours just on the first touch and recoveries. Ball reads only come with playing so add another 2k hours probably. And by then I would have quit the game because it would be boring. I think the way to progress the most honestly is learning freestyling. Not like full on freestyler level just learn a new freestyle mechanic every couple hundred hours.

The difficult part about shooting is not jumping and flipping through the ball, it's the approach. If I miss a shot in a game it's because my read of where the ball will be is slightly off or I messed up my turn leading up to the shot. I think that's why most shooting training packs don't seem to work. Most packs already give you a very solid line up and you don't really have to read the ball you already know the way it will bounce.

I think the key thing you’re missing is that they DO practice shooting. Like you said, shooting is used in every single game. Every ranked game they play is them practicing their shooting. Comm beat you in the shooting challenge if I remember correctly. They never use training packs but still have pretty exceptional shooting because they have 10,000 hours in ranked matches.

From an instructing pov, there is a point of diminishing returns on practice time. Consider that professional musicians will often stop practicing after 2 hours because of those diminishing returns, then return after an hour or so break. 5 hours of 2 hour sessions broken up by an hour break is exponentially more effective practice than 5 hours straight. “practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes permanent”.

The aim training map is great but I think it would be better if it included a turn and shoot option. My biggest problem is hitting the ball on target when I have to turn to line up the shot. That is by far the most important part of the shooting for people in diamond and champ like me. You should make a video where you pay someone to make a plugin like that cause it would be so helpful.

Even the best in the world are successful less than half of the time.

I have a soapbox on 'putting in the hours' just for its own sake. It does help you distinguish yourself because a work ethic like that always pays dividends, but practice sessions where the amount of time is an end goal rather than the product of completing your practice goals eventually picks up massive diminishing returns. Persistent problems don’t go away with time alone. Practice isn’t just about putting in the reps for hours on end, it's about making each rep as thoughtful as you can-- understanding why something worked or didn’t, looking for different solutions and mental tricks to it, and using that discovered knowledge to pare down the process of practicing itself so that you can make more progress in less time and have it stick forever. It's a lot more mentally intensive, not sustainable for hour-long stretches of time, and calls for frequent mental rest, but efficient practice is the best way to demonstrably improve your game, fast. You covered this especially on Day 2 when you talked about implementing Virge's mantra about visualizing the shot; if you keep up these practice sessions, I'd love to see you follow up and talk about the different tricks, solutions, and common mistakes/misconceptions you've learned about yourself as a result of this shooting practice! That knowledge is the most valuable driver of practice, and I'd love to know more about what it looks like in RL.
@budweizer100
@budweizer100 Год назад
I honestly think a large part of the issue is that Free Training is the default for match down-time. You turn on RL, queue up, know that you have about 30 seconds to fill, so go into Free Training. Without any kind of set-up, you either smack the ball or take it to the wall for an air dribble, by which point the match starts. If Psyonix included the option to have your last training pack or a favourite training pack accessible from the Match Select menu as a one-click start, people would practice shooting or whatever else you can do in a training pack more often. Choosing a training pack by going through the menus and lists takes too long, so knowing that, people don't go there, unless they're dedicating specific time to it, which most don't.
@prime6965
@prime6965 9 месяцев назад
I recently talked to a pro player and he gave me a great insight as to why I should limit my training time that I dedicate to shooting. 1. Regardless of whether or not I'm dedicating time to training shooting, I'm going to be getting lots of reps in just by playing ranked. The same won't always be true for other mechanics like air dribbles or flip resets. 2. Since shooting is THE mechanic of rocket league and is universally essential in every single game, we all have lots and lots of hours in shooting. Whereas, if I'm trying to add a new mechanic to my toolbelt (say, flip resets), I might be able to train for an hour and see massive improvement in my skills. So given that everyone has limited time to play, its better to train your weaknesses and keep adding tools to your toolbelt one by one than it is to spend hours and hours working on a mechanic that is hard to improve and is used every game anyways.

LOVE YOUR VIDS! They help me a lot as someone who wants to improve but cant justify all of these steep coaching prices that are out there recently. TL;DR I would LOVE a video on your findings after long practice sessions of ALL aspects without playing, because I sometimes do it myself and want to know from higher level players how I should tweak/improve my training/warmups. I would LOVE another similar video. One where you practice ALL aspects of rocket for 3 days(instead of just warm up sessions). Some days I just dont feel like playing in games and I practice for 3-5 hours instead of queuing games. Ill load up rings maps and/or shooting packs and/or defensive packs etc. I have personally felt those sessions help, but not if I do that THEN play some queued matches. After playing that long, you just need a break. What I have felt was just general improvement. Just generally doing everything a very little bit better. I am low/mid Diamond, up from mid/high Plat, where I was stuck at for a long time until towards the end of season 6.

Anything that you can't do it's work practicing, often we stay in our comfort zone where improving is really hard and slow, but if you practice shots or mechanics that you can't do your skill will skyrocket, just don't push yourself to the point where you just rage, you need a bit of comfort, if this make sense, like you can't practice flip resets if you're not consistent with air dribbles or you just get mad and don't improve, you need to keep pushing your limits further and further the more you learn

I think a big reason people don't practice shooting a lot is because most people feel like they're at least somewhat decent at it. Obviously they could still improve, but as you've shown in the video is takes a lot of time to improve once you react a certain skill level. Compare that to something like flip resetting. If you can do them sometimes, but miss them a lot, then if you practice for a bit, you're likely to see improvement faster.

An old Sony / PS2 game [ SOCOM II ] used to have this splash screen before logging online to play.... " GAME PLAY MAY VARY " i really wonder if we put too much faith in the performance of the software and networking to always play 100% consistent. i would be a Cool experiment to Preprogram BOTS and the BALL PATHs and watch the replay of 3-4 games to see if the Bots were always on the Mark!

I think another reason they don't practice, and why practice (at least in the short-term) doesn't seem to help, comes down to two things: 1) In games you have to position yourself to take the shot, and in those practice packs you often know where the ball is coming from (or have plenty of time to react, without pressure); and, 2) in games you have to adjust on-the-fly in response to the position of the other player(s). So, at best, those training packs only let you practice the angle and maneuvering when taking a shot, not the shot as a whole. It's like practicing field goals in football (Freedom-edition) or free-throws in basketball: In those scenarios there's no blocking opponent, so regular practice is quite helpful. But practicing passes or lay-ups in the same context only helps hone mechanics, because in the actual game there will be opponents looking to interfere. To properly practice these things in all three games, you need an opponent of some sort, and in RL the best way to go about this (AFAIK) is to just play games. If someone could make a training pack where a roughly-car-sized square would move around the goal box, so you don't just have to line up your shot but also account for the opponent's position, it would probably be far more helpful come game time. To make it even more realistic for standard, a second "opponent" should approach the ball at a steady pace so you have to also account for their movements when taking the shot.

That's an impressive level of concentration to be able to do that much training alone and stay motivated! I get bored after 10mins, let alone 5 hours! I would think the #1 thing to keep this up long-term would be a teammate/coach. You need someone to hold you accountable and motivate you (I know NBA players take hundreds of shots per day in training, but I'd say they rarely do a day of training where they are just alone with the hoop). Also, I think Bakkes mod allows you to cut off sections of the net (so you're forced to hit top left, top right etc.), not 100% sure on that, but I believe I've seen someone do that.

Perspective: Squishy had this video where he said, "I remember when I was wowed by that twirl motion that car do sometimes." But he didn't show how to do it. There are just some shots that if you dont turn your car or whatever correctly, you give up if you are not show how. Time stamp: 5:06 part of the shot is cut off. One more thing. Can you put in an overlay? There is one shot that I get once a day on accident. My2cents

Hey, wayton, what are your specs when it comes to setup. I went from switch to xbox for rocket league, and want to get into PC gaming. Also, banger video man! Much love, keep it up.

I was thinking of a joke comment to leave the moment I saw this notification and I started to type "Calling it right now, it's shooting." Then I heard the word shooting in the video, and my joke went out the door.

TL;DR: My consistency in running a shooting pack at least once per login has led me to 60mph(96.5kph) as my standard for shooting. If it's slower, I consider it a bad shot for myself. It's average for me to shoot around 65mph (100kph is 62.1mph) multiple times per pack or game, due to my dedication to shooting practice. I began running at least 1 shooting and 1 defense pack every login as a warmup. Defense usually saw the most effect toward building my consistency in aerial control, both in launch speed/accuracy, as well as flight control. Second most effect would be in ball placement/control. BUT, shooting? I would spend hours shooting, just trying to perfect a shot that can't touch the ground after the timer. My placement, my car control to make angles, my shot speed, everything. Exponential increase. I now won't pass a shot in a training pack if I can't shoot it over 60mph (96.5kph), which has become my standard for a good shot even in game. It's not uncommon for me to hit shots in the 70mph range (112.6kph+), and sometimes I'll even solo an aerial shot that breaks 80mph (128.7kph). I'm not certain if that's impressive in the higher tiers of gameplay, but for me (Hardstuck diamond duos for 2+ seasons, play champs/grand champs pretty regularly in pub duos) my shots average half again as fast as the shots that I see other players usually hitting.

I didnt watch all the way through before saying this, but when I coach people in other games, I am adamant that it isn't about time invested, but it's simply about taking away the right knowledge from the practice itself. A person who practices only once a week can certainly beat someone who practices all week if the first person is learning correctly. I even played at Majors in Tekken just off this mentality.

I know im just C2-3 on a good day, and pros shooting is way better than mine might ever be, but I find shooting practise very helpful. Sometimes I'll grind out shooting for a week(waiting for mates/queues) and it even surprises how accurate I can get

Not gonna lie, while watching this video i realised shooting is more important for me to learn than anything else (excect rotations) as a low rank player, thanks a lot Wayton

I also think another reason that wasn't touched here is...Yeah, you can practice training packs day after day but man, there's so many factors when it comes to an actual comp game that I feel like it doesn't really add to anything practicing the same 10 shots over and over.

I have a pc by 3 weeks, and with coco's training map i improved more in these 3 weeks than in 8 years in this game. I think is literally the best skill to train for consistency, i was d3 in jenuary, now i'm almost gc1

I am incredibly good at aiming my shots, once I notice where someone is bad at defending, I do nothing but shoot there. This + good rotation will get you C3 at least. I have no mechanics lol. I have 0 mechanics other than the smoothest, fastest half-flips you can do. Strategy is better than anything else in this game. Learn how to defend corners, learn how to pack corners. Defend your goal line, shoot around their goal line. The corner/goalie divide when you are getting packed. How and when to follow your tm. How and when to chase. Slow play the fast players and fast play the slow players. Boost starving, demos, fakes, running the clock, learn how to play completely in reverse, shadow defending, becoming your opponents bad TM. It takes countless hours to learn all the ways that people play the game. Mechanics are only the ability to implement your strategy. Learn the game first, not flip resets.

Squishy is very consistent in shooting, you can also review his games on his platforms and replay to see how he gets in certain positions and how he gets it off to the most accurate shot that the opponent will struggle to defend

Two variables that weren't mentioned were the latency and camera angles. Those play a big difference in where a shot ends up. I'd like to see someone practice, then play only LAN games to recreate the EXACT timing/angles. Camera angles are just what they are, unpredictable...

If you want to practice for a long time, you can also listen an audio book while playing, it's much easier to not get bored of training because your brain is distracted with the story
