In this video, I will be taking a look at the Roland JV sound engine through a recently acquired Roland XP-50 workstation. Its not in the best shape but I’ve managed to get it going and making sounds. Is it just good for Vaporwave or 90’s pastiche soundtracks or is it still useful in 2023?
Thank you to www.www.synthmania.com for the expansion card demo's.

Still using my JV-1010 with the Orchestral Expansion bought from Year 2000. Indispensable until today. ❣

I had an Xp-50 and loved it. The Sound on Sound review noted, "Like the JV1080, the XP50 incorporates Roland's new 32‑bit RISC chip (Reduced Instruction Set Chip), to which can apparently be accredited the instrument's ability to process large amounts of data fast, a factor that manifests itself in real‑time control over effects, and being able to haul around large amounts of sequence data without going all limp and soggy. So we like the RISC chip." It certainly never lagged.

When I was in Dallas I saw the Roland JV 1010 on Marketplace for $125 Upon hearing the sounds I fell in love and it was instant nostalgia from the 90s I was so in love that about a second one within the same week It is one of my favorite synth modules, especially for piano sounds

I have a JV-1080 that I bought in 2008 after watching a series of videos which were the earliest videos showcasing some of the JV-1080's patches. Part of the reason I bought it was because I had always wanted one after hearing it on so many recordings from the 90s and early 2000s without even realizing it at the time! I have since bought another 2 rack modules, a Roland U-220 and an Emu Proteus/2 but in the spring and summer of 2024 I'm going to see if I can find a Korg M1R which is the rack version of the M1.

You’re going to have a great 90’s/2000’s set up! Some really great sounds to be had there and like you said, really reminiscent of tonnes of hits!

I just found a non-op XP-50 on craiglist for $50. I had read that a big reason these things go bad is because the capacitors on the main board were just terrible quality, and only have a lifespan of around 20 years before they leak, dry out and go bad. $12 spent on an SMD capacitor kit off Amazon, and an hour or two with a soldering iron, and it's back in biz. The thing is a blast. I really need to dig deeper into it and learn how to program the sounds.

That’s great, we’ll done for rescuing it! A lot of 90’s stuff suffer from bad caps. It’s amazing that synths I have from the 70’s are still going strong with original components but a lot of 90’s stuff are suffering badly now. Definitely get the editor app, should make programming easier, have fun!

Still using my expanded XP50 for games music and general composition. It is all over Clive N Wrench's OST as I wrote all the music for it starting with the Roland and an MMT8. I never did get on with the inbuilt sequencer. As I'm about to start another game project, I'm sure it will still find a place.

That’s great to hear it’s still going strong and delivering the goods! I’ll definitely be using it and hopefully try and find a reasonably priced expansion card..

@@mixingmasteringonline Good luck with the latter. I remember when they were £75 and I thought that was expensive. 💰😥

Just picked one up and completely dismantled it to replace the switches, and re-sanded / polished the 61 keys (something like liquid droplets splashed on and ate away at the plastic giving it a gross texture). Only thing left to fix is the encoder which jumps values when bumped a certain way. But I can’t locate a compatible off the shelf replacement. Any thoughts?
@mixingmasteringonline
@mixingmasteringonline 9 месяцев назад
Well done with all that work! Don’t know about a replacement new encoder unfortunately . Although that part was shared with a lot of Roland devices. Units like the mc303 has the same one I think

I've a soft spot for the old Roland, Korg & Yamaha workstations. It's a pity that many of the Roland sounds couldn't be licensed for the software versions so they're a bit hobbled (I think they're now owned by Spectrasonics). Still hoping that Yamaha realise that there would be a lot of interest if they made software versions of all their SY and similar machines.

I didn't realise they didn't own the sounds for the expansion cards, shame they couldn't partner up. The Yamahas would be a good shout for software conversion. I have the SY22, still gets used a lot!

It’s a shame when you regret selling something. You can still happen upon them fairly Inexpensively if you look around though..

@@mixingmasteringonline I doubt I'll get the expansion cards it had so cheaply though! I'll give the VST a go however - thanks for pointing that out in the video!

@@SchubertDipDab Yeah, the vst is a good option but the expansion cards are the big attraction really and the best ones are so expensive!
