Nevertheless no pacemaker could give him guidance the whole race with the benefits of wind shadow and a precise speed to run under 2 hours. This plus they let them have a time window of 8 days to do it under the best circumstances disqualifies them from a official world record for in my opinion good reasons. The track, the weather conditions, the equipment which is used and the pacemakers which rotates plus a car and the specific pick of a course which nearly shuts down all wind from the side because of the trees plus the large crowd to increase the effect. This are a few reasons why it would be unfair to measure it with regular marathon times on official tracks under competition rules and circumstances. But dont get me wrong. If he can achieve a time under2 hours it would be phenomenal and outstanding... Even if it's not a official WR in marathon.

@Kuroko The claim that "no human is limited" is just about the WORST thing Eliud has ever said. EVERY human IS limited in a 1,000 different ways (can't go without eating, sleeping or using the bathroom; can't run as fast as a cheetah; can't breath underwater; can't ...)

@Kuroko The problem is the words HE USES: "No human is limited" - is at best a mis-statement; at worst, just dead wrong. Sure, we can assume that what he means; my point, is that HIS WORDS don't convey THAT message. Given that they don't, they are pretty useless, imo.

I kinda hope that marathon will win because this is not a honest way to break the record
@rovingrangerr
@rovingrangerr 4 года назад
This is not about breaking the world record legally - you have normal marathons for that. This is about showing to everyone's mind and consciousness that it is physiologically possible to run the marathon in less than 2 hours. Much of the barriers in sport over the last century has largely been psychological: think the sub-4 minute mile for example. With the benefit of hindsight, we now know that it's physiologically possible to run a mile in under 4 minutes; in fact more than 20,000 people have done it ever since Roger Bannister first did. But at the time, basically everyone thought it wasn't physically possible, that you would literally die if you were to do it. Because so many people had attempted it in a span of a decade and failed over and over again, there was this general unspoken consensus that there exists a physical limit that prevented mankind from ever being able to do it. Today, we know that those limitations were purely psychological. This event is tailored to specifically address and dismantle that psychological barrier, so that the full extent of the top athletes' physical capabilities can be unleashed in the marathon, which will likely see us legally breaking the 2-hour barrier in the future. But in order to achieve that, we first need to convince the mind that it is physiologically possible. And you do that by carefully controlling all the other variables (weather, pacing, hydration etc.) so the body can fully focus on running. To put the current WR into perspective, if someone were to say Eliud would run a 2:01:39 WR in the marathon the day after Dennis Kimetto broke the then -WR in Berlin in 2014 with a 2:02:57, we would've laughed at him because the WR is normally broken by small margins-it gets harder the faster that record becomes. But the experience of running an assisted 2:00:25 in the Nike Breaking 2 event completely revamped Eliud's mind. It showed him that it was physically capable to run a lot faster than the then WR, which resulted in his 2:01:39. Once he's done that, you know what that does? This in turn convinced Kenenisa in his mind that he's capable of running a similar time himself (remember he's arguably the best distance runner of all time overall; Eliud is still the marathon G.O.A.T.) since he sees himself being on a similar level to Eliud, if not better. That gave us the wonderful 2:01:41 the other day in Berlin, just 2s off the WR in a less than ideal run. The human mind is an amazing thing. Once you convince it that something is possible, you'd be astonished by what it can help you achieve, which is a philosophy that's applicable to all facets of our lives. This is what I love about this 1:59 challenge.

@@GreatNewsVideo Cheers mate, if the improvements they made in this project after learning from the near-miss of the Nike Breaking 2 event are anything to go by, Eliud will most certainly run below 2 hours, and that's being conservative. Factor in the massive presence of supporters (which gives a massive psychological boost), the fact that this event is catered specifically to Eliud, the slight improvements in the Vaporfly shoes, a better course, most likely better conditions (as they've allocated 9 days to pick the best one to run the race on, instead of just 3 during the Breaking 2 event), a better pacing team and Eliud's improved fitness since running the 2:00:25, he will likely smash the barrier by a huge margin. One important, less-talked about tweak that has a massive impact is the INEOS team's choice of the wording-"1:59 Challenge" (which imprints the visual in Eliud's mind of running a 1:59:XX marathon) instead of Nike's "Breaking 2" tagline (which subconsciously conditioned his mind to see himself running a 2:XX:XX marathon before the event, which is exactly what ended up happening). It's great that the INEOS team have/consulted experts in the field of psychology for this event. Looks like a small detail, but it actually plays such a huge role psychologically.
