I was lucky enough to meet Bill Wyman he was great . He is the only (ex) member of the band who will give the late Brian Jones credit for all the early work Jones did .
he seems like a top bloke and not affected by the fame etc. ive always loved that line by laconic old charlie- 'the fing with brian was, he wasnt very nice and people didnt like him'.
When you know yourself, you know what you really need, you know when you have enough of it , & when you need a change . Money, fame, respect, whatever... Bill walked away when he "had enough" of the Stones, in a truly good sense of the phrase's meaning.
If I were Bill, I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on anything either. When I think of the Stones greatness, I don't think of the nostalgia tours they are putting on these days. The Stones can still rock by the way. But the Stones for me are the Stones of the 1960s and 1970s, of which Bill was an essential part. That was the Stones that produced all those hits which Bill was right that he was on. And live, today they are only a shell of their former selves.
Agreed. Exile and Goat's Head Soup are my favorite two, but really, everything when Bill was a member. That's when Keith and Mick wrote all the great material. "Moonlight Mile" is gorgeous 😍 Being on those albums is a great honor. I wouldn't have wanted to be on the road for those tours, bc drugs and drinking has got to take a heavy toll on the road. But those albums are beautiful, man
Bill seemed so old when he was young, and grew so young as he aged, obviously not into the self-destructive aspects of the rock n roll lifestyle. He's finally showing signs of being in his 60s, but in fact, he's 76 at this interview! What's your secret, Bill?
I really like Bill a lot, he has a great attitude when he says he's had a fabulous career over the years but he had to move on and get other things done in his life.
If The Stones are fortunate enough to be able to do a sixtyish anniversary next year 2022 , I hope Bill Wyman would come back for it or at least for some of the shows !
The Stones were always about Image as much as music and thats why Brian's Stones w/ Bill will always be the best-Mick Taylor, great as He is, wasn't the leader and founder of the band like Brian was and Ronnie, also great, was better guitarist with the Faces then he ever has been with the Stones so no comparison
I am in complete agreement with everything you said. I've been saying that myself for years. Brian Jones is The Rolling Stones. He did all of the heavy lifting in the early years.
Great musician, one of those who made band. They had been Greatest rythm section ever with Charlie, that made Stones further more than a rockn roll band.
Jan-yngve Bohlin Maybe, but he isn't right for the Stones. Bill was there from the beginning and has contributed to the best of the Stones. Jones has done nothing for the lads and never will. He's wrong for the boyz.
Darryl has the advantage of modern gear and recording techniques. Wyman played an instrument that was still in it's relatively infancy starting out with few musical role models and inspirations. Keith has had the support of both and he never disparages Bill's playing.
@@jan-yngvebohlin5980 you must be joking, i have heard them both at stones gigs , i am afraid bill wyman was much better and clearer in his bass playing, also the magic timing, they had which they havent with darryl jones, sorry but thats the truth and i have played bass myself for 40 years so i should know.
@@StevenCarinciWhat do you mesn he's done nothing? Darryl Jones is a great bassist and just what the Stones need. He's a Hired Gun abd does just what they need him to do.
love bill, miss him with the stones, but i feel a sense of sarcasm in his words.dont think he ever thought they would be just as good without him.not in the studio, but thats because they dont write anymore, but better than ever live.
The Stones have always put out new albums when they tour---they're not a nostalgia band. And their newer songs still have the quality of the old ones.As far as being a "shell'...you try touring for 50 years and see how you fare!
the stones in hyde park was awesome, but keith and mick t's (imagine being 20 in 1969 and going from playing pubs to joining the rolling stones and debuting in front of a quarter of as million people or whatever it was) guitars were slightly out of tune as they also seemed to be at altamont (but that was at night and cold, and so a lot more understandable / excusable).
Could not agree more,GE..Love Mick's contribution,but the original Stones were the foundations-built on black music & rock'n'roll..that was Brian's legacy,I reckon..good ol'"Nanker Phledge"
Mr Wyman Is The Reason Why I Picked up A Bass And Learned To Play I Saw Them At 15 In 1978 Last Show on Jaggers Birthday July 26th Was ,Incredible And Again In 81 And 89 ,94 97 99 2002 But When He Left Hit Me Sideways But I Get Why Life Cannot Revolve Around Just That And Now Charlie Has Passed on They Should Just Retire The Last 15 Dates They Had To Do With Steve Jordon I Get ,,Contracts From 2020 Covid BS And Having To Wait But Bill Was Right How Long Can You Keep Going Playing Most of Same Old Stuff In Arenas And Stadiums Repeat Same Stuff When Charlie Died I Was Floored To Say The Least Nothing Left To Prove Boys And It Can Never Be The Same Just 3 Guys And Backup Musicians No Charlie ,Bill Long Since Gone On To Other Things ,,It Just Looks Sad
@Paul Newsom so true how long can the stones continue continue and continue well the stones carried on for so long that it was ridiculous and they sure had way way to many farewell tours that it was ridiculous that’s insane the stones were no longer The Stones ever since Bill Wyman left when Bill left the stones lost the swing the groove bill put in the stones sound for a long long time it slowly slowly all went downhill from there the swing never came back after bill left bill was the magic behind the stones sound for along time the stones became garbage junk every member should of hung it up after Steel Wheels and now Charlie has passed away so then there really is no reason for the stones to go on they should give up retire the stones are no longer the stones there no longer a band that cares about creating great music now they became a franchise a money making pit selling t-shirts jackets coffee cups magnets watches clocks lithographs ash trays cigarette lighters etc etc collectables and having tours they did all they could do for 60 years what else do the stones need to prove they were legends for decades every member should of all retired after steel wheels in the early 1990’S
@Brain Falarski Steel Wheels was The Stones last best tour after Bill Wyman left they were done finished when Bill left the stones lost the swing the swing never returned when Bill left it slowly slowly all went downhill after bill left they became nothing but garbage tattoo you was the stones last best album the stones should of hung it up after steel wheels they have nothing to prove anymore and after the passing of Charlie Charlie has passed on so what else do the stones need to prove for decades they were legends or rock n roll the stones are no longer the stones every single member should of hung it up and retire after steel wheels they all should of stopped in the early 1990’S
Brian was a complete asshole. He frequently missed gigs because he was too fucked to play, leaving it to Keith to play lead and rhythm by himself. Brian also physically abused women; he beat the shit out of Anita all the time and Keith rescued her from her. I wouldn't go either.
OH COME ON BILL , THEN WHY DID YOU START ANOTHER BAND , WAS IT FOR THE MONEY OR THE LOVE IT , GO AND PLAY WITH THE BEST , YOUR PART OF IT , SO WHY DON'T YOU ENJOY YOURSELF ,., WITH THE STONES
I know it's been 5 years but..... with the Stones he could only play Stones music. With his other bands he can play what he likes with a lot more variety in styles. Got it? ( better late than never ! )
Nonsense, you don't know what you're talking about. I'm a bass player of 40 years + and I can tell you he has created and played great bass lines. Darryl Jones is a great bass man too but has a different style.
