That voice in the background was the incredible Merry Clayton. The whole story of how she got involved In singing this song Is told in the Oscar winning documentary “Twenty feet from Stardom “ . A great watch for music lovers !

@@thomasmills339 I remember years ago while traveling from Toronto to Ottawa to visit my parents, my husband and I were listening to the radio (most likely CBC radio) when they had a story about this song and about Merry Clayton. They even played her part of the song (isolated from the rest of the song) so we could really hear the crack in her voice. So yeah, some of us knew who Mary Clayton was before watching this.

The woman is Merry Clayton, who was called in for that session the night they were recording this. There is an excellent 2012(?) documentary that, among other things, included her description of this recording. The film is ‘20 feet from stardom’ - about her and other iconic back-up singers. I really, really recommend it. After I saw it, music from that period had a whole additional dimension for me. Merry said that this particular track was her second take on singing this that night, when she really let loose. She was pregnant at the time and unfortunately, soon after had a miscarriage. For a long time she was very resentful of this, however eventually she came to take pride in her part in the song. For a long time, on many ‘best rock songs of all time’ lists, this was considered the greatest, or at least in the very top tier. For me it’s the clear #1, but that’s just my opinion. 👍👍

Great reaction. Shockingly, I've watched young people react to this and some don't seem to get what the song is about. You got it immediately. This song came out during the Vietnam War. Arguably this was the first time that the horrors of war were beamed directly into people's living rooms. People were traumatized by this war. And yes, this was a protest song but also a warning.

When you react, your genuine passion shines through, and [countless] many of us appreciate it, lady! (IMHO) This song will always carry forth the timelessness of its energy. By not mentioning specific details of the chaos during the [song's] debut, the emotional output grabs the listener/'feeler' by the core of their gut and brain, and gives a guided tour of an almost-haunting period of intense global dis-ease. Riots, [the Vietnam 😞] war, social/racial unrest (etc.), and not knowing when, or IF, it will ever end or bring renewed [constructive] change #Suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. You should also do songs like "Brown Sugar" and "Sympathy for the Devil". This song is serious and it's a burner. It was written at a time of great upheaval and war and suffering. The Stones were connecting with that was going on in the world. Perfect sound and desperate words...like they were saying, "war and rape is here but love is close too...just a kiss away...". Choose love.
@jerrypost9651
@jerrypost9651 Год назад
You absolutely captured the essence of it. The song came out in 1969, when the US was heavily embroiled in the Vietnam War, which all young people globally (including this band) rebelled against. The song seizes upon the idea that all it takes is one first shot from one side and World War III could break out -- with nuclear warheads flying. And you are spot-on about the female vocalist. There's a whole story about all the hoops she had to go through in her personal life to be there to record her part. On top of everything else, she was super pregnant at the time and had to sit during the recording. But what the lyrics conveyed was that rape and murder are an integral part of war. They, too, could be unleashed with a single first shot. How much more reasonable to turn toward love. ❤

At the time there were mixed signals, with glitz, free sex, entertainment industry, drugs, money and ego surrounding the Stones. I thought it was good music, but that was about all I related to. Its interesting to see another generation react to the actual message. I've followed the Stones though the Merry Clayton years, two decades of Lisa Fischer, and then Sasha Allen absolutely taking the top if it (see Havana Moon). They and the song have actually gotten better as Jagger fades. But as I've aged the message has become more important to me as well. It's the real rdason ths song endures. It's not exactly war, but I think we're again a shot away. Its impoortant to remember, we do have choices.

It sounds depressing and dark. Why? An understanding? Why is it so dark? What is this about? Released 1969 at the height of the Vietnam War. War Children? US soldiers in Vietnam. War, rape, murder all just a shot away. Fire is sweeping down the street today, burns like a red coat carpet? Napalm! Find no shelter, the storm, a flood coming? The Vietcong. Find no shelter against this and you are going to fade away. Love is just a kiss away? If we kiss and make up we can love one another rather than slaughtering one another. Woman, it's deep. But only if you understand truly what it is about. Merry Claytons voice breaks on the high note, and you can hear Mick Jagger say 'Woo' in the background. She offered to sing the song again, and Mick said no, what you did was just what I wanted in this song. It is so powerful, because this is a statement about the Vietnam War. Why are American service men and Vietnamese being so badly wasted? Why can they not make up?
