It's amazing that the Rolling Stones came up with such deep lyrics at such a young age.
@mikeg.4211

The line at the very end is the main point, where he says, "I'll tell you one time; you're to blame'. Humanity is to blame for evil and for not restraining the devil. Also, see the line about who killed the Kennedys, "when after all, it was you and me".

The singer Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics after he read a Russian novel called The Master and Margherita. Good book but this is arguably the best song of the rock era. Like many poets Jagger seems to understand things he could not possibly know and puts them into words. Great reaction.

The comment by @Daniel Dambrosio , I think, pretty much nailed it. The devil is, more or less, nothing but the personification of humanity's worst facets. "I'm a man of wealth and taste...". ... He talks about making sure that Pilate, 'washed his hands', to not take responsibility for what was happening, and also about being a general in a tank, during one of the most horrific periods in human history. It truly is one of the most poignant and thought provoking rock songs ever written. (In my opinion...) Thank you for your reaction to this, Tracie. I love to see reactors actually listen to, and analyze, the lyrics. This was awesome! Cheers!

The devil when he's trying to get your soul maybe is not like a heavy metal monster, screaming and growling, but might appear very sweet and teasing, really a handsome guy he is or may be at times, and show his other face, the ugly one, only after he got you... that's what I always got from the song... but as a work of art it surely can be interpreted in different ways. It's easy to withstand the obviously evil as it is deterring, so the devil looks for ways to have you actually like his proposals, and feel sympathy for his ways... this is for me the main merit of this eternal song from Oldies Week... is has you realize how easy the devil makes it for anyone to follow him, and this realization gives you spiritual shivers... he's playing a groovy tune and has a catchy chorus :) that's for sure! Loved your reaction and love you! Have a great evening!

I appreciated the musical composition after I watched the Jean Luc Godard movie. I saw one interview by Keith who said that Jagger brought up the song,but the way Jagger had it, was almost Dylan-esque. Kind of a country type harmony the way Mick envisaged it. I agree with Tracie, it’s actually a spiritual reminder. I am 67, and i remember getting the original beggars banquet album, with just the name of the album written in kind of Victorian on the cover. I think b-side was “street fighting man”. I think “sympathy “ actually was the drumbeat of the time (Kennedy, MLK assasinations). This first of four albums (beggars, let it bleed, sticky fingers, and exile) were the most brilliant music. Stones heavily into American blues. The Godard movie, shows Brian, Anita, Bill, Maryann, doing the “woo woos”. I love seeing younger people’s reactions to this music I grew up with. Stones are timeless, true artists, who love what they do, it shows.

Jesus' moment of doubt and pain refers to what happened in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion. He prayed to his father for "this cup to pass over" me, the cup being his crucifixion. That's the doubt. The pain was from feeling all the sins of mankind falling onto his shoulders. The pain alone caused him to bleed. --My two cents worth, hope it helps a little.

You should react to a few songs from "Exile On Main St."! Songs like 'Rocks Off', 'All Down the Line', and 'Stop Breaking Down' are perfect songs to listen too. Fun fact: In 1972, the Stones were literally exiled from UK for "tax exile" and got screwed over by record label ABKCO, thus fleeing to the country of France where they recorded half of the albums music in the city of Nellcôte. The album is very diverse in some genres of music from Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, some Psychedelia music and Gospel. Although it received mixed reviews at it's time, "Exile..." would be voted at 14th of the 500 Greatest Album's of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine! It's also my favorite album of theirs so I hope you check it out!

Historical references: Jesus in the desert tempted by the serpent. Jesus taken to Roman governor, Pontius Pilat, for judgement. Pilat declared he washed his hands and Jesus died. Russian Revolution where the Reds executed the Romanov Czar and his family after raping his beautiful daughters to death. Anastasia was rumored to have died last screaming. Nazi generals revolutionized tank warfare and performed the first Blitzkrieg leaving fields and cities full of dead Poles rotting. Their tactics are still used today. Ten decades refers to the Hundred Years’ War between Protestants and Catholics that depopulated much of Central Europe. The Kennedy assassinations which changed USA politics forever, prolonging Vietnam and the Cold War some claim. Laying traps for troubadours before the to Bombay is about the murder of Gandhi which left India and Pakistan divided and eventually nuclear armed waiting for a spark, Song reminds me of a story about a man standing before the throne of God demanding to know why he let such suffering exist on Earth. God replied he had been wanting to ask the man the same question. Most amazing lyrics ever.

Tracie, I'm guessing you are a committed Christian with a literal interpretation of the Bible? To understand the lyrics, you need to understand irony, which is something very strong in British culture. Basically, the meaning is hidden behind the words used and is not straightforward to interpret, saying one hthing and meaning another.
