You're probably thinking I'm a bit messed up in the head, uploading another Kansas City (The third on this channel), but no, all different ones!
And this upload my friend, is the most special and probably the most epic one so far; On december 14 '81, Tattoo You tour, the Stones at their most successful tour so far, are joined by former Stone Mick Taylor!!!!! I truly had a great time listening to this show!
When it begins, only the current line-up is on stage; Under My Thumb, Neighbours, Black Limousine, etc; Jagger's voice is sounding rough, since he developed a much more ''manly'' voice in '80/'81 and all the concerts in this tour he's sounding like this, sloppy too, babbling some random lyrics, sounding very bad sometimes; Despite this he's sounding very good during the whole show delivering great performances of Waiting On a Friend, Tumbling Dice, Miss You and Start Me Up
As for the joining of Mick T!!! He enters the stage before 'Let Me Go', and while he's performing he's sounding fucking good! You can hear his guitar loud and clear (Soundboard quality helps) and distinguish his guitar from Ron Wood's (It's not hard, Ron is using mainly a Stratocaster, with a very distint sound) and Keith's Telecaster
Thanks to Taylor this show features, at least in my opinion, the greatest live version performed so far of You Can't Always Get What You Want, Start Me Up and Waiting On a Friend, and one of the best of Jumpin' Jack Flash!
Special mention to Bobby Keys' sax, making the performances of Miss You and Beast of Burden much more interesting and epic! Bill Wyman's bass guitar gets more listenable at the end of the show, delivering some groovy lines on Satisfaction and J.J. Flash
Ps. I just loved this show so much, musically speaking; The instrumental of this show sounds perfect as hell when Mick T. joins them, one of my favourite shows! Jagger's ok, even though he's still sounding very good, just as I mentioned before :)
*Reminder: Ron Wood later said that he didn't like AT ALL Mick T.'s appearence: ''[He was] bulldozing through parts of songs that should have been subtle, ignoring breaks and taking uninvited solos." Poor Ron hahahaha
Setlist:
Under My Thumb; 3:41 When the Whip Comes Down; 9:04 Let's Spend the Night Together; 13:21 Shattered; 18:13 Neighbours; 22:20 Black Limousine; 26:05 Just My Imagination; 34:36 Twenty Flight Rock; 36:29 Going to a Go-Go; (Mick T. joins in) 40:07 Let Me Go; 44:46 Time is On My Side; 48:38 Beast of Burden; 56:07 Waiting On a Friend; 1:01:47 Let It Bleed (Great version); 1:09:27 You Can't Always Get What You Want (Perfect); 1:19:45 Little T & A; 1:24:50 Tumbling Dice. 1:30:03 She's so Cold (The recording cuts out most of it); 1:32:33 Hang Fire; 1:35:56 Miss You; 1:43:23 Honky Tonk Women; 1:46:58 Brown Sugar; 1:51:03 Start Me Up; 1:55:39 Jumpin' Jack Flash (Great version); 2:06:19 Satisfaction

I was at this show. So happy to have found this recording! Thanks!!! I do wonder, though, if there was an editing error. As i recall, Mick Taylor was introduced just before Black Limousine, not Let Me Go. It would have been odd to have a great blues guitarist come on for Let Me Go--not a lot of solo material. You can also hear Jagger at end of Black Limousine thank Mick.

@@unstableconnection9902 I recall Taylor being onstage for a bit before Mick introduced him. I kept counting the number of dudes with guitars and wondered who the extra guy was. I dropped acid before the show and was peaking when the stones started playing.....I thought I was hallucinating until I recognized Taylor. I excitedly told everyone near me " That's Mick Taylor, That's Mick Taylor!!" One woman told me his name was Mick JAGGER not Taylor.

Thanks for the upload. Just a few comments on these Kansas shows. The Stones played in Kansas City on Dec. 14 & 15, 1981. Mick Taylor played with them only on Dec 14 for the simple reason that he was playing with Alvin Lee in Granite City on Dec 15. This recording has an exceptional quality. I have had this concert for more than 20 years but your cd sounds much much better. I don't like the 1981 Tour but I love Taylor, you know..... One more thing: Taylor plays slide on Black Limousine and Jagger thanks him for that. Check it out.

There are a lot of comments on this thread from people who probably wish they'd seen Mick Taylor earlier that week but clearly didn't. Since I was at both Stones shows, the Alvin Lee concert (with Mick Taylor in the band) and met Taylor between the two, let me clear up some of the myths repeated on this thread. The Alvin Lee concert (featuring Mick Taylor) was NOT the night before but rather two nights earlier, on 12/12/81. It was not at some club in Westport but rather at the relatively stately Uptown Theater. Alvin Lee did not play a pair of shows but only one concert. He actually told us after the Lee gig - while signing my copy of Goats Head Soup - that he was going to be around for a few days and might play with the Stones. We thought he was joking. Two nights later, there he was. Word of mouth (in those pre-internet days) swept through KC and scalpers picked up a premium for the Stones 2nd night at Kemper but Taylor was already gone, continuing on the Lee tour.

And there in the background of Under my Thumb is the creative guitar sound that elevated the Rolling Stones out of the Single based British Invasion 1960's into the Virtuoso Blues/Jazz based era. If it was not for that guitarist the Rolling Stones would have disappeared with the British Invasion..Listen to the the Richards/Wood guitar solos..those are beginners grade displays...and boy did those new songs suck.

Taylor was in Kansas City for a gig with Alvin Lee leading to his guest spot at the Kemper. Ronnie Wood explained in his autobiography, “On the ’81 tour in Kansas City, we heard that Mick Taylor was in town we invited him up on stage for a few numbers. Perhaps the reunion over excited him. He seemed to refuse to realize how much the band had changed since his departure. He shocked us with how loud he was blasting it. Bulldozing through parts of songs that should have been subtle, ignoring the breaks and taking uninvited solos. And the volume! I thought me and Keith play loud, but he was easily three times louder than us. I was standing next to him, passing along messages from Keith who would say, ‘Tell that @#$%& to turn it down!’ I was a little more diplomatic: ‘Um, Mick, the song is finished’ or ‘It’s in E, not F.’ Afterwards, Keith told me, ‘It’s a good thing you were standing in between us or I’d have flattened him.’ But he’s a lovely man and it was great to see him.”

It's NOT Bobby Keys on sax, but Ernie Watts (not related to Charlie). Jagger says it himself. I'm doubting now if you, uploader, did listen to this recording at all!
@davidnika446
@davidnika446 10 лет назад
Yup, you can tell. He sounds great to me though. But during the solo in Going to a Go Go (one of my favorite sax solos)...he sticks on the same note for a looong time, as if he was figuring out the part right on the spot. Then the solo seems to hit the finale late, as Jagger sings where there's usually a few more bars of the sax part. But playing live is way trickier than it looks. So I give Ernie Watts high marks.

Quite correct Kleermaker. He's also incorrect about when Mick Taylor joined them on stage. Sounds like MT started onthe second song of the show. I remember him saying that he couldnt believe how fast the tempos were. Charlie even misses the beat on some of the tunes.
@2008PLS
@2008PLS 9 лет назад
Woody was probably jealous of Mick Taylor's performance, as if you listen to MT's earlier live work with the stones, especially in '69, he would solo through most of the songs improvising through all the chord changes. If they ever could assemble a quality collection of Mick Taylor live performances from 1969 - 1973 with the Stones, it would be quite a prized collection of the best of the stones live.

+2008PLS - I think MT's zenith was the 73 european tour, by that time he was so beautifully breezing through every tune. An interesting guitar titbit from 69 is how Keith & MT share the solo on SFTD, keith starts it and there's a noticeble switch to Taylor - I suppose in 69 SFTD was still Keith's baby and he had to show Taylor the way in - after that 69/70 tour I don't think they ever again played SFTD again during MT's tenure

Ridiculous.....Woody was his own man..Taylor..... a motionless statue..... oversoloing to Stones songs is a yawn fest.....Woody complemented Richard's with the rhythm and leads weaving back and forth and was a much better showman.....jealous of Taylor....???? .....you mean Taylor jealous of Woody....for quitting the greatest rock band of all time to flop with Jack Bruce and drift into obscurity on the Claptonwannabe circuit in small clubs.....watching the Stones continue to thrive and grow with incredibly great music and tours....yougottabefuckinkiddingme.....Love You Live was always hands down the best live Stones album...it absolutely buries the infantile get yer ya ya's out....so does this show.....not even in the same ball park....

Interesting to listen to. But the mix is horrible. I detect none of Mick Taylors brilliance from his prior heights with the Stones. And you say Wyman's bass gets more listenable at the end? It sounds like he's playing a rubber band in Satisfaction. I love the Stones, but this is sooo not even close to their best. Jagger sounds hoarse, like in most of the rest of this tour. Guitars are sometimes out of tune with each other in some spots too. Stones sound way better now, in 2014 than this.

Keith Glimmer That is so cool! I was 10 or 11 at the time of the tour. Some older neighborhood kids asked me if I wanted to go to a show when the Stones were in town, but I doubted that my parents would let me go to a concert with a bunch or 16 to 18 years olds. But at least I did get to see them in 1990 or so.

Really crappy what Jagger did to Taylor during this concert. "Just don't put him through the PA." What a dick. Let's let Taylor on stage in silence. I have listened to this show on audience, and the "PA tape" dozens of times. Taylor is not present but a few seconds before/after each song. And the whole performance is embarrassing. Coked out to the point of jittery.

According to legend: Keith came close to punching him out for ad-libbing chords and getting in the way. Maybe now I can understand! Taylor was and is still incredible!

Taylor doesn't come on till the 11th song in the set so anything prior its Keith and Woody.

Brian Herrington Taylor definitely plays a slide solo on Black Limousine. Jagger even thanks him after the song.

This is totally insane..... hearing them all in their prime at the same time.... I was at 4 shows for this tour, and the guitars were thin..... so different than the MT years. The other problem with this tour was there was WAYYY too much Bobby Keyes on nearly every GD song. i love Bobby. But with Wood's guitar sound being so thin, the ratios make them sound a bit drunk, taking up with the house band in some cabaret in Vegas..... This isn't Bobby's fault; it's just the sound board man--drowning out Woods & Richards---is obnoxious.... Listen to Miss You here. Then go listen to the version of Miss You from Fort Worth in 1978. The '78 version is INSANE..... Then the ratios on Brown Sugar are perfect!! Also, listen to how thin the reverb is on Honky Tonk Woman. With Taylor back in the day, the reverb was howling. Of course Taylor was going off doing his own thing HE'S MICK TAYLOR....... Woods thin, tinny sound was, is, and will always be horrible for the Stones sound stage.

I too thought the guitar sound on these shows were thin, squiggly thin. I like the "style" of the weave they were doing at this time, particularly on the studio recordings...but considering this was a tour made up of open air stadiums and large arenas, a little more wallop on the riffs would have made the shows heavier...

I agree. The sax player is a pain... but he is not Bobby Keys. His name is Ernie Watts.

sorry guys Mick Taylor left the stones in 74 ..so the reason why you don't hear him is he left the band seven years ago

*He didn't die in '74.* He joined in with The Stones several times since his "undeath" in '74, both with The Stones as a group and on individual projects.

The reason you don't hear him is because he was turned down in the mix. He could be heard a little better than this but not much in the arena, but he definitely was there...so was I.

Never liked the 1981 tour all that much. The end of jjf had some of the worst drumming ever.
