Well, we are certainly giving the phrase "raising the roof" a VERY literal meaning with this one! We've known from day one that the most massive undertaking in this project was going to be removing the fire debris, and the most massive part of that debris is BY FAR getting the old, burned roof off.
After a few almost BLINDINGLY high quotes we rounded up our team from Arkansas and Natchez and put them to work. We were AMAZED watching the fork operator and his giant sized game of "Operation". Luckily, his hand was steady and all the bits came down as planned. However, no project like this is ever without its hiccups, and with this one, we had a pretty good one. Who needs two chimneys anyway??? (We do, FYI)
Along with that madness we organized and hosted an exhibit at Historic Auburn of Mourning Jewelry, Pilgrimage Tours, and a shutter survey. Then there were all those changes that were happening at that little cottage project we have going...
How many plates can we keep in the air at once? Well, we can at least keep three historic home restorations going at the same time. SEND HELP!

This is my first time posting but I’ve watched for ages. Here’s why I watch, the history , the homes , hard work and silliness but mostly for the respect I feel watching you save a part of history. Trying to bring back a burned down peace of history ? OF COURSE! Good on you ✨

As ar as the grounds go you could reach out to the local garden clubs. I'm sure they would be thrilled to offer direction and maybe free labor. My garden club volunteered in many of those activities.
@aok2727
@aok2727 8 месяцев назад
I was thinking the same. I would not plan any new plantings. I would clear up the obvious volunteers, mulch up and compost all that can be and begin working on soil and plans. Next year, plant trees….I could come and do this!!

I would pay for an ornament laser cut in the shape of Hope House out of the old tin roof ❤❤❤😊. I watch another RU-vid Channel and she talked about Karl from Timber Creek Turnings in PA, he makes gorgeous pens and also includes a certificate of authenticity detailing the history of where the materials of the pen came from. He could make it out of any scrap wood and possibly anything left over from Hope House. I would buy one of these too. 😊🤗 I can’t wait to stay in the cottage! ❤

Hi Laine and Kevin! I hope all has been well with you both, and your dogs are doing fine. What an exciting, enjoyable, outstanding, educational, historic and humerous update on (1) the Hope Farm mansion's roof removal and related house preservation and restoration processes; and (2) the former on-site Walking Dead cottage. My how time has flown by. Once again, I'm so glad you both have your own RU-vid channel where you can do everything your way. Had this been a scripted HGTV episode with a film crew and directors standing behind the scenes regulating everyone and everything, y'all would have heard the word "cut" so many times that it would have made your dogs want to bite the Pope. 🤣 Do continue to be and stay safe out there. GOD bless!

There are portfolios that are made like a LARGE book, with clear sheets that you could place the sheets of paper flat, and would help to preserve those newspapers/journals.I think you would need to stabilize the paper first before placing them in the portfolios. Probably check with local archives for experts to get advise and guidance. It would be expensive but of So Cool!

Oh oh,oh... I live in Winchester, KY. The Courier Journal is from out of Louisville, KY.525 West Broadway,Louisville,owned by Gannett and part of the USA Today Network. It started printing Nov. 8th,1868. Wow,small world,huh?That looks like a really nice spread on the front page. It actually looks like an insert from maybe a Sunday paper? The archives at the paper would know if you wish to make further inquiry. I'm loving this.

Loved this video update on Hope Farm and the cottage. How fun to be staying there right on the grounds(along with the hard work too) as you and the others bring her back to her former glory! As a side note, loved hearing the train horn in the background toward the end of the video. Sweet memories for my husband and I of where we used to live as kids and adults. Sold our home of 28 years built in 1893 Victorian farmhouse style in town came down to me thru my granparents with a barn/ carriage house😢 but were in our 70s now and just too much for us to keep up with so love all your old home restoration that you both do so well ! This video was at the top of my queue this morning! Oh my goodness! The Carmen Habanera 'strip-tease' roof tear-off was awesome! Sorry it was so nerve-wracking for you, but I understand. When you are watching the dollar signs in your head getting bigger and bigger! The mourning jewelry exhibit looks fantatsic! The shutter survey, not so much. Volunteer trees are definitely a thing; here I have mulberry, pecan, carrotwood, golden rain trees, Mexican Fan palms, and native oaks. I love the oaks, and encourage them if they're in a good spot. The crows take pecans from the trees on our street and store them in my copper rain gutters until they can return to crack them on our terracotta roof tiles (or drop them in front of cars...smart birds!!). Many tiny trees end up growing from flower pots and other random spots. That's so exciting about the 1953 Pilgrimage program! I've learned never to 'just toss' a pile of papers, even if they're musty. Treasure, indeed. The other day I found a photo from 1903 of my grandmother's oldest brother and his cousins at the family sawmill in the "Big Woods" of Wisconsin. Logs to lumber! The mortice and tenon construction with the carpenter's marks is fascinating! Great stuff, guys!
