Thanks for taking the time to test for us homebound. Your first round (cold bore shot) will almost always be out of the rest of the group. All of our LE snipers had our cold, clean bore shot documented for each rifle. Mine was always a minute at 7 0'clock, too. While 9, 40, and 45 are closing in performance, I always did like throwing bigger rocks where ever possible. Stay safe.
I just found your videos - I see that this one is a bit old, but since it's the first one I've viewed as far as I remember I'll comment on this one. There are a lot of videos out there showing gel tests with X, Y, Z ammo & loading, but not so many that use high quality, unused clear gel (clear gel, especially clean, not-shot-previously gel is SO important for viewers who're trying to see what the round did!) with good-looking slow motion while getting into the nerdy details regarding the loading, weapon used for the test, velocity, et cetera, all narrated by a knowledgeable individual. Yours appears to be one of those few channels with truly great and informative testing! Keep up the good work! =)
thank you i bought 2 boxes each of 55 and 73 grn for my testing and 40 rnd mags. Can't wait for the 556. versions I have tested the 55 to be the best for home because of the KE dump on impact.... thats its intentional home defense design and for the rifle bullet weight intentions of the engineers of gun and bullet. i tested it (55 grn) in my home (sounds crazy) barrier penetration is minimal it went through 1/2 of wood expanded then hit drywall crushed through creating 1'' hole but no further penetration. This is acceptible for my neighborhood tests with my test protocalls. ( minimal barrier penetration / KE dump first barrier). The concussive force in a room is high you will feel the boom in many ways, the flash is not existent in light and low in darkness. ( my eyes were not blinded from night flash) Thank you! I miss you tnoutdoors9!!! 127 +p+
My wife would turn the gun on me if I did that. LOL. Speaking of KE dump - i'm editing the CDR .308 video right now. ;) Hopefully I'll have it up this weekend. Thanks for your comments!
Love your channel ! I'm hoping that more people find you , as you are more in depth than most others who are in this niche . Ever since TN9outdoors stopped posting , there needs to be someone who can be top dog in this particular niche of ballistics. Thanks for what you do for us !
Great presentations sir 👍 just find out your channel and I have to say I’m very impressed with the amount of information and detail ,that’s lots of good work and dollars. Will recommend to friends.
Wow, I just finished watching your 55gr Critical Defense test video, didn't realize you also had one for the 73gr as well. My comment question from the last video has been answered as well, you've got a 1:7 twist rate as well. After comparing the two, I think I'm gonna go with the 73gr option. Barely any accuracy difference and significantly better looking gel test. Amazing stuff, what a good round in both weights.
Thanks Man! I just make videos for fun and try to make them valuable. I don't try to promote the channel much, because it's not a full-time gig for me. I'm a working medic and have crazy hours - I make vids time permitting. Thanks again for the comment! GS
Wow. Was at my local Academy and there were only two boxes left of the 73 gr Critical Defense. I was on the fence about buying them vs something like Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST, and Sig Elite, but 1) they didn’t have any of those other defensive rounds, and 2) HOLY CRAP on that first shot. I’d call that VERY effective while also mitigating over penetration, which is what you want for that type of round. Definitely picked up those last couple boxes 😂
Thanks for the sub! I already took the .308 155 gr FTX out, completed the same battery of tests and hopefully will have the new vid covering it up by Sunday evening.
I never understood the more penetration angle. Would that not go in and out of a person and keep going? Wouldn't you want it to completely stop inside the person, hence dumping all of the energy inside? I am newer at this. Thanks.
Just found your channel brother, and it’s awesome! Have been looking for someone as in Depth and technical as TN9 Outdoors and I will definitely be subscribing to your channel!! Love this review and you sold me on picking up a few boxes to test myself. Any chances you might do the the Hornady Black SBR 75gr round? Currently running that in my 10.3 pistol but would love to see you do some testing on the round as well.
Thanks for this! Your barrel is pretty identical to mine. I love Critical Defense for .380 and 9mm carry ammo. I’ll be locating some of this based on your analysis. 3 boxes = 2 mags 👍🏼 subbed fo sho!
Hey Grey State, I'm about to go on a hog and gator hunt down in FL in a couple weeks time. Planning on taking my shots with these exact rounds out of my 16", 1:7 twist barrel, Sig M400. Will report back afterward with field results.
18" is good. I have a 16.5" 308, it's a bit unique for a 308 AR, weighs 7.3lbs bare and is the length and size of a AR15, not AR10. IF you test the 155gr ELD-M please do in gel too. Thanks, love your videos. If you were around FT Polk Louisiana I'd lend you my Revolution to test the 155gr Critical Defense and 155gr ELD-M..
Well didn't see any Hogs both days. Will definitely be back up there in a couple weeks. But something interesting cuz I haven't seen a ton of data on hunting with 6.5 Creedmoor. As far as the different loads go. Hornady premium hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor, we shot a spike in the base of his neck and killed him instantly did not take a single step fell where he got shot. The amount of trauma it was in the neck of a deer was crazy. I'm definitely leaning towards 6.5 Creedmoor my favorite new hunting round. But I'll definitely let y'all know.
seems like tsx, gmx, and bonded stuff like god dot. you get a deeper penetration.. but you dont get close to this kind of accuracy. I think im going to be moving to this for an all around cartridge
Great video! Thanks for doing this! I'd be interested in seeing the 73gr critical defense go up against a 75 gr TAP. Is the TAP load still available? I haven't heard anything on it in a few years.
Hey Elias, I was a lot of fun. I do have a couple of TAP 75s left, and thought about doing that. I don't know how many of the old TAP (now disco'd) are still around in the wild. It is still available as a LE only round, which would be pretty hard for the general public to get a hold of. Let me noodle on it al little more..first thought is that I just do the gel block comparison.
2:50- I thought only the critical defense came with the FTX plug. The critical duty I have is just a strait jacketed hollow point. Edit: correction, it is actually the hornady TAP that I have that is a std jacketed hollowpoint without the tpx. Critical duty does have tpx.
That guy a while back took down a criminal from 40yards with his carry pistol so with a rifle you can shoot further much easier so why did you set 25 yards for the max distance if you are protecting someone else you may be forced to take a much further shot though it's not ideal but you are safer at distance especially with a rifle
5 rounds for accuracy at 25 yards is kind of a waste of time, unless the round is completely crap. For accuracy testing you need to shoot further than that.
Not if you know anything. Minute Of Angle is Minute Of Angle at 25 yards or 300 yards. The army teaches soldiers to zero the M16 at 25 yards at 1 click foreword from 8/3 flush and when you switch back to 8/3 flush you are zeroed for 300 meters. If it's good enough for the Army, it's good enough for me. I don't see you putting MOA groups in the center of targets at 25 meters. Put up or shut up.
I needed to offset the block to ensure it was level to the barrel on the other table.I agree, bullets do weird things, but if it didn't hit the case it, would have hit the table underneath it, or went out any of the other open sides. From my experience with gel, the rounds are pretty predictable in regards to their path. There is no real obstruction to cause deflection / change of direction.
This round is a hollow point. Just like Hornady's Critical Defense / Critical Duty pistol rounds, their rifle line uses the same elastomer tips to accelerate expansion.
S W correct. Hornady themselves were using the same protocol to test:demonstrate to energy dump of the round - I was validating, and going deeper than they did. GS
When you walk down range it sounds like you’re mining gravel in Minecraft. Not firearm or ammunition related Ik not I did a double take because I was confused
Do you use the standard calibrated 10% gel or something else? I'm curious because your penetration depth is considerably deeper than what Hornady got in their own gel tests. I'm curious why there is such a large disparity between your gel test and theirs. Personally I prefer that the ammo exhibited the penetration you showed but with two tests showing that much of a difference I still don't know what to expect from this ammunition. I'm speaking specifically of the 73 grain.
brandi wynter Yup. Stated the FBI test protocol and put it on the video overlay. Not trying to be a jerk (seriously), just trying to explain the detail put into the video. It was calibrated 10% FBI block gel from Clear Ballistics shot from a measured distance at 10 feet per FBI protocol - once into bare gel, and once through four layers of denim per the FBI loose clothing protocol. This is the whole reason I do these tests, and go into more detail than most. Often, what we see in marketing videos rarely matches real world environments. Meaning rarely are we going to use these loads in lab testing environments. I want to make us more intelligent with additional data points of understanding to apply in application. Again, not being a jerk here, but being sincere...if you are asking this question it somehow means I missed the mark, in explaining the protocol and materials, if you have ideas on how to make it more up front let me know! Thanks for the comment / question. GS
@@TheGreyState No worries, your video was well made. I probably just missed that part because of being distracted. I appreciate the response and I didn't think you were being a jerk :) I'll have to look into this ammo more now that I have a better idea of how it performs. Much thanks.
Guys if someone is breaking into your house and you have access to your handgun or AR are you grabbing the AR? I'm just curious because as I know it's more lethal it's much bigger to maneuver around your house and firing it in your house without ear protection could be pretty dangerous no? I'm grabbing my first rifle and was just curious your guys opinion.
You can be more accurate with an AR than a pistol...just physics... I would prefer the silent kill with a 8” inch knife through the spine...to each is own i guess lol 🤘🏽🇺🇸🤘🏽
@@ThiccJungles ah up close and personal! A man whos not afraid to get his hands a little dirty! I respect that my friend. Let's hope we're never in that position.
My pistol is always with me wherever I am in the house and even under my pillow at night, it is always the first firearm I grab. I'm not going through the house looking for an unnecessary confrontation with an intruder unless some dire circumstance forces me to do so. If I have the chance I will go to or stay in my bedroom on the far side of the bed for cover, call the police, and if the intruder wishes to seek me out they can find me and my Winchester Defender 12 gauge pump shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot waiting for them. We have a code word here at the house and if it is called out it means grab your firearm and hit the ground as there may be shots fired. I have long guns and AR pistols, but I believe it is easier to wield a handgun in the confines of a house, besides the fact that the flash and deafening report of an AR pistol in a rifle caliber could be disorienting and damaging to yourself. I understand it might be different with a suppressor or a pistol caliber AR type weapon, but the majority of people that own AR pistols in rifle calibers don't have suppressors. But I guess it is so dependent on what firearm you are best trained in and what you are most comfortable and confident with. Just my opinion.
@@EC-mc7vg I agree 100%! That's what I was thinking. I fiqure my rifle will be for any dire circumstances outside my house or on my property. If a guy is breaking into my car I would grab the rifle and go out there. You got a good plan for if shtf. It's nice to see a women who is well planned and is always prepared. Great advice ericka!
BT-10 V8 from Atlas on this rifle to keep weight down. I run the BT46-LW17 PSR from Atlas on my other rifles, it's a little more stout, albeit more expensive.
and this being a gun channel i get the need for the repition of numbers but, come on bro this whole vidya is about 1 maybe 2 different ammo's you don't need to repeatedly repeat that shit.
I really wanted to watch this video, but he said uh and umm so much it became painful. Just 3 minutes in I couldn't even focus on what he was saying anymore. If this were a drinking game I would have to use both hands and have the drinks lined up before hand.
Nobody gives a fuck if you wanted to watch the video or not. He isn't here for your entertainment. How about YOU make a video and see how good that goes for ya? Have a nice day, snowflake ✌
I hear ya' - the reason though is that there is a lot of BS out there, full of opinion, and not evidence. Reality is that nobody commenting knows me and people jump in and out of watching videos at different points in it-especially when they are a little longer. I do it so that viewers know that I am being transparent with them and not editing results to favor one result or the other. It's a double edged sword, but I error on making sure all the bases are covered to keep it real. Thanks for the comment!
i guess man but my advice, dont argue with fools a.k.a. dont take comments too serious make a video that's more pleasing for YOU to watch and see if your not happier with your entire youtube experience not tryna hate @@TheGreyState
