I load my last 3 rounds with tracers, so when I see tracers go out I know I'm about to go empty. I picked that tip up a while ago and thought it was a great idea.Thank you for covering it.
I know someone that shot a 40 cal in the house, full metal jacket, it went through the corner of the wall, went through metal sheet, bended that open, went off the tile into the wood drawer partially connecting on the side of the drawer skidding, and then went into the wooden drawer and only then expanded. Most 5.56 is even more penetrating, it will fucking clear that and go further. Only hollows man. That FMJ is is a scary round in the house, don't underestimate it. Armor piercing inside the house is borderline criminal round to use for home defense, it will clear the neighbors house too...from any "intruders"
Actually, fmj 556 has been shown not to penetrate the way you think it would.. this is because it acts CRAZY in a soft target. Flipping arounf backwards, tumbling, ect.. causing MASSIVE INTERNAL DAMAGE IN THE PROCESS. You would think it would clear 60 inches lol, but it simply dont.. however as a miss, going thru hard targets, your theory has a lot more provable merit... I use a 556 for home defense. All ball rounds. But i live in the woods.. if i lived in an apartment , i wouldnt... Id use my shotgun or handguns, ether loaded with proper ammo... I cant see using a green tip for home defense.. and really, a rifle is limited in a home defense scenario... Even ar pistols are bigger , bulkie, and more dangerous for innocents that than a pistol... If im living in close proximity to other people, i just dont feel like a problem is coming that a 17 round magazine in a glock 17 isnt gonna be able to handle... Thats just me...all im saying is in my personal opinion, if i kill a bad guy, a home intruder, but flatline the 7 year old kid next door, that isnt a win or a success to me....
This is pretty bad advice - don’t mix rounds in the mags. Assuming everything is reliable, how do you intend on keeping track of what order you’re in? Also, it really doesn’t matter. Most likely, whoever is breaking into your home isn’t wearing armor and they will be very close. 55gr will reliably fragment.
THE WALTHERETTA they will all be soon if democratic extreme lefts win senate too. I am in Ohio and have a plethora of extended mags. From my ruger 10/22 in an archangel 556 ar conversion kit and the ruger bx25 mags, and a good bit of ar15 mags. Biden wants to make a 200 dollar tax stamp on any mag that can hold 10 rounds or more, plus on the firearm!
Our State Troopers load their 30 round mags with 77 grain hollow points. During testing, no body armor ever stopped the 77 grain hollow points. Yes they expand quickly, however the velocity of the 223 is just to much for any vest on the present market today. When the need is to "KILL" the bad guy, you want a round that is going to go in the body and blow shit up! period. Also, in regard to the "mean green tip" penetrating car doors, would any of you want to volunteer to stand behind a car door and have someone fire 77 grain hollow points at you......just saying.
Mil Vet here. By stacking your mag like that, you're adding lethal "variables" to a potential gunfight (which is likely to get you/neighbors/loved ones killed). Green tip should not be in any home defense mag.I like you, and I like your channel, but IMHO with that loadout there are too many things that can go wrong, and (despite the best intentions) you can never take a bullet back.
In my opinion it doesn't matter because whatever round your using will get the job done regardless but you do need to make sure your neighbor isn't rudely awaken by a bullet to the leg!
VMAX, Soft points, and lead core hollow points in that same order. They will not over penetrate. Tip: To tell whether or not a hollowpoint is lead core, shine a flashlight down then open tip of the bullet. If it's lead core, you'll see a silver circle taround said zone, too.
If I were going to mix my ammo, it would be in a logical progression, from lighter penetration to moderate. Probably two types at most. If I thought an attacker wearing body armor was a significant threat, I would keep a separate mag of appropriate ammo. To each his own though. I appreciate that you share YOUR approach without telling others what THEY need. We have enough of that with the left telling us how to live our lives.
Green tips were initially designed to penetrate a specific Russian steel helmet also it was designed around a 20in barrel ie the a2 or a4 platform. That is why folks talk about the ice pick wounds from the 14.5 barrel m4 it doesn't have the velocity to tumble upon impact. Yes it will penetrate some soft armor but it is not and has never been classified as an armor piercing round. Speed kills armor and the 855 is just slower than 193 this is also one of the reasons the Army is swapping to the 855a1 round with Bismuth steel exposed penetrator and solid copper projectiles. Love you videos but you were off base with you initial data on the round, which us consequently the reason folks jump up and down scream and holler about armor piercing
Boss the way you describe "yaw" is incorrect. You described "pitch", where the bullet pitches forward. A yaw is when it also moves the front to one side or another while pitching forward. Space terms, also used in sailing. Great video
40gr nobler ballistic tips put the damage on an organic target without going through them (overpenetration) but can still shoot decently through a solid surface (car, wooden outbuilding wall with bad guy doing the Somali overhead spray and pray, or something like kitchen cabinets or refrigerator they may be taking cover behind) and when loaded properly come out very fast from shorter 556 platforms including very accurately out of a 7.5” pistol. Would love to see more testing on these light ballistic tip rounds on gel and barriers.
I use 29 rounds of Hornady VMAX, but great idea with the Surefire. It doesn’t hurt to have more ammo, regardless if I need it! I’m in a subUrban area so hopefully 29 is good but why not 59!!
Yes, user Hornady...please.... Someone I know had a misfire with 40 cal, bullet went through a dry wall in the corner (strong part of drywall), exited out of the metal sheet that reinforced that drywall, bent that, hit the tile below, skidded up, went and grazed the wooden drawer, skidded into another part of the wood (side swipe), and finally hit the direct impact into the wood, and only then expanded. That's FMJ round, not even armor piercing. Use it for your own safety, and for neighbor's safety.
1. I have that 60 round mag and it’s never had an issue with hundreds of rounds put through it. With that said, I would still prefer two 30 round mags with 28 rounds each. 2. I don’t like the idea of mixing ammo. I have 2 mags joined like a “V” and staggered, one with 55 grain one with green tips for my home defense go to…
Honestly for home defense in just about any situation it won't matter what is in your magazine.....hit them where it counts and the threat will be neutralized. Grab whatever ammo you can because you likely will not get your pick of the litter, load it up and you will be fine. Bullets all kill at the distance you will be firing at in a home defense scenario.
@@imnotimpressedbyourperform2460 I honestly don’t remember the specifics of this video, but ammunition choice for home defense should 100% be a well thought out decision. In some homes you might come out of the master bedroom with your kids room on the other side of the living area. Largely depends on layout of home. For me I use a 11.5” ar. I choose to use 77gr .223 instead of 5.56. This is due to the fact that in the layout of my home there is a window where I could possibly send a flyer into an adjacent room. .223 is a lighter load and will send the round at a slower velocity out of the shorter barrel than a 5.56 would. Most factory .223 velocity numbers on the box are data out of a 20-24” barrel that I know of. When shot out of a 11.5 you are barely at the effective velocity for the round to do what it is supposed to do. So if I make a good hit it will have lost most of its velocity and the fear of the almighty “over-penetration” is lessened. Just my thoughts. Always love a good discussion on this matter though. This is how we keep the community from being so toxic.
Maybe im ocd. Definitely not an expert. But the idea of mixed mags is not an option. My edc mags are always the same. Whats in my gun is backed up by mags filled with the same ammo. Maybe im crazy. Just cant comprehend on so many levels
I carried FMJ and hollow point in my EDC until I came across syntech by federal which comes apart in four pieces. Love the idea behind the tracers! Glad I picked up some when it seemed that was the only thing available in 2020 shortages. Great video and new subscriber! Thank you for your service sir!
For those who have no experience shooting through material I suggest you take a course like Rich offers at Deep Woods to better understand barrier penetration and ballistics .As he mentioned different bullets behave in very different ways when it come to glass Sheetrock cinder block etc. Especially in a home defense or vehicle attack it could mean the difference between life or death knowing what you can use to your advantage. The difference between cover and concealment. Great video Rich !

@@lilramen6195 i generally just use m193,soft point .223 or hollow point varmint loads. .223 gold dots are also pretty cool…. If you’re using a rifle for home defense, the training is going to be more important than the ammo selection. Just about Any round will go threw walls if you miss the attacker and any could go threw even after.
@@imnotimpressedbyourperform2460 i have federal varmint rounds… but any big brand is more than likely good to go. A few smaller companies make rounds specifically targeted towards home defense. Underwood ammo (and a few others) make a round called “controlled chaos”,check out some gel tests here on RU-vid they’re pretty intense.
Some valid and great advise! Thank you, I use stagger 2 rds M855 and 2 rds MK262. Close enough for short range home defense. May get some tracers too, great idea!
Few things I do. I run last round tracer. Soon as you see the light, rip out the mag, reload. Instead of mixing ammo. I electrical tape band the bottom of my mags. So I know what im pulling out of the plate carrier. Blue band for ball ammo. Green for green tip. Red for 77 grain otm. I dont bother running any frangible ammo. Ive had too many problems with it. Depending on what its made out of. Ive had those little turds brake off while being loaded. Makes for a fun time when you have bullet fragments floating around your trigger group. I dont get too wrapped up in the expansion debate. Remember, 100 out of 100 dead terrorists polled. None could identify what round hit them in the face.
I prefer the 77 grain 5.56 but they're overpriced in my opinion and I agree with you on the effect when the rd yaws (above 2,500 ft/s) it does the intended effect of its design.
Green tip for when I'm in my woods. You need that extra hardness to go through big game(Bear, etc.) M193 too soft, hollow point doesn't penetrate deep enough.
I always look at green tips as the intermediate answer to defeating barriers which isn't actually an answer. Legit arrow head hardened penetrators seem all around good for defeating barriers as well as penetrating hard surfaces in order to still deliver kills, and obviously defeating armor. Green tips seem more like a round which may more quickly tear up light cover a little better than regular ball ammo. This sounds good to someone who may be used to hearing and seeing their cover getting annihilated by 30 caliber rounds. The ballistics seem ok too but you also seem to get better armor penetration with hotter standard ammo if it's going a bit over 3100fps. 2800 or so kind of defeats the purpose of penetration if it's a mild core sliver that won't defeat what a 3150fps round will. So it leaves me thinking standard ball ammo or hollow/soft point, and I suppose it sometimes goes down to factors like me living in a condo and regular ball probably not being the best idea. Gold Dot it is then.
1. Most home defense scenarios don’t end up with high round count shootouts, bad guys will always take off running after the first bang. The 60 rd magazine is unnecessary weight. If you’re that worried just toss a second 30 rd mag in your pijamas. 2. Most home intruders don’t wear body armor, the only thing you’ll do with green tip is shoot through your neighbors bedroom wall and risk injury to others. For home defense I’d go from 5.56 to a lower pressure and heavier round. A 64-77 grain hollowpoint chambered in .223 would be ideal. The heavier, slower round will stay in the bad guy, causing more damage to him/her and less chances of over-penetration.
Well you want to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. I wouldn’t want to run out with my ar with just 3 rounds in the rifle thinking that’s all I’ll need. Zombie apocalypse, government take over, there’s different scenarios to be prepared for.
So I agree and disagree at the same time with this video. I agree that this is a good home defense set-up, for his home. From what I understand he lives on a farm with a good bit of land, and I would assume in a very rural area. So a 60rd mag and green tip ammo makes sense. The time for law enforcement to arrive is probably an eternity. Plus the chances of him shooting at target outside his home and potentially behind cover is higher. So for that situation I can see how this would work. But I disagree in the sense that for your average suburb/city dweller, a 30rds of HP or FMJ would be plenty.
Exactly, people are trying to rob you not kill you. Any fire fight during a robbery will be brief. Unless someone is there doing a hit job on you then you need all the ammo in the world.
people overthink this any bullet out of a 556 will do jus fine I keep a marlin 22 for home defense there is no way iwould shoot a 556 in the house I can't even shoot it outside without earplugs
This video must be a joke. Don't use 60rd coffin mags. Don't alternate your ammo with different types. And definitely don't use green tips for home defense.
It's sad that someone like this speaks as if they're an authority on anything regarding this subject. He's BEYOND incompetent and SEVERLY inexperienced...
@@TerminalM193 hey bro what type of ammo is legal to use in ar15 for home defence..like in the case of pistol every professional or even laws advices to use HP bullets instead of FMJ because of the over penetration of FMJ,,
@@sukhvirjhajj2619 Over penetration is a myth. The ONLY time you want to worry about over penetration is if you're literally living on top of people. It's shown that even 9mm can over penetrate ar fmj rounds. I personally choose a bonded softpoint for inside the home. Anything from Speer Gold Dot is great. Also, heavy otm rounds from imi are good. Also simple M193 is amazing for defensive purposes.
I just use magazines that couple together. But I would never ever load a self defense mag with M855.. It just does not do the damage I want it to do. I only load monolithic barrier blind projectiles that are designed specifically for self defense applications.
@@WillGGG The people raided in Katrina were living in rural areas. How much farther out should they move? You must not know about Katrina and who raided who.
A major problem with using high pressure ammo for home defense, is significant ear damage (ruptured ear drums, etc) caused by such high pressure rounds being fired inside in relatively small spaces. For this reason I personally do not use 5.56, 357 Mag, etc. for home defense. In 357 Mag revolvers, I use 38 Special, preferring the reliable, street proven stopper 158 gr lead HP's at around 1000 fps from a 4" revolver, and use the same in 357 Mag lever action rifles. The 9mm in standard pressure is good for home defense and the 9mm carbines are superb little substitutes for the AR 15 for indoor use. I like having the 38 revolvers and lever actions AND the 9mm pistols and carbines on hand, because the experienced gun handlers in the family can use the 9mm pistol/carbine and those of little gun experience can easily be taught the use of revolvers and lever action. Pump shotguns in 12 gauge are inexpensive and a necessity in any home defense arsenal. Nothing more intimidating to a crowd outside your home than 3 or 4 family members who are armed with 12 gauge pump shotguns, watching that crowd!
That why there’s something called suppresser but people love it loud I guess I don’t like it loud at all very rare I can take on the noise but suppressed rifles is the best and safest
@@HuyLe-vo4pg shooting unsuppressed sucks. There are also good suppressors that are very affordable now. Look at Yankee Hills turbo line. Last I looked they run like 4-500. Or save and buy a deadair sandman s and use it on every firearm you own.
This makes no sense. Frangible ammo and green tip for self defense? Frangible ammo is made for steel targets and green tips are not armor piercing rounds. They are barrier penetrators. So If the bad guy is wearing steel plates the green tip does no good. If the bad guy is wearing soft armor, then regular FMJ will go through it and then fragment as intended. Same for your furniture. Want more penetration? Pick a round that retains it's mass more effectively. Also, green tips don't have the same lethality as FMJ since they don't fragment which is what makes the 223 and 556 deadly while minimizing penetration by loss of bullet mass. I just keep 223 FMJ in my AR. That's what you want for home defense. It penetrates through walls much less than 9mm. Testing shows this.
He literally explained his reasoning for the different ammo (covering as many situations as possible) even how frangible ammo reacts against bone and that green tips aren't armor piercing. Most of your comment is repeating things he said differently, then stating what you run. If it works for you 👍👍
Actually frang ammo isn’t just for steel targets. It was made for use in areas where civilians or other non combatants are present to prevent collateral damage from through and through’s. It’s also used by military around critical infrastructure such as aircraft or nuclear components.
Wait! round 3 is a green tip. If I miss I over penetrate, Makes zero sense. Your argument for frangible and over Penetration is just dumb. The tracer argument makes a lot more sense than that other nonsense.
I load 223 at 45gr ballistic tip and 62gr 'green tip'. I'm using a 7.5" to 10" for that purpose. It's still brutal at 150yds, and mixes it up well. I keep 69gr & 75gr for longer barrels & engagements
@@russellstall169 and to be more specific, projectile over-all length, and twist rate, are matched for stabilization. This matters because solid copper rounds are longer than copper jacketed lead, per same grain.
I just subscribed to your channel and I already have a question for you, great work by the way 👍🏽💯🖐🏾❤ so my question is What is the best ammunition to put in your Ruger AR-556 Sr Rifle, I bought some Remington 223 full metal jackets but my ammunition kept getting stuck in my Barrel SMH, I broke it down & removed the cartridge safely so that's outta the way but What's your answer on my question, let me know you're full of opinion, please & thankyou 👍🏽
Coupled 30 round mags > 60 rounds. Load mags to 28 to avoid feeding issues. - ALL bullets penetrate. It is literally what they're meant to do. A bullet that fails to penetrate wouldn't sell a single round as they would all either fall out the end of the barrel like a cartoon or squid load. The question is their lethality after penetrating certain barriers. - Also, know your environment. Greentips are almost always a bad idea in just about every HD scenario. It is my understanding that they will fail to dump their energy on the target and keep going through them. You are responsible for every round. Use ammo that stops within the intended target and performs poorly after passing through a single barrier. - Lastly, only take advice like this from people who have been there and done that. Aka special forces level people. Almost everyone else just doesn't have the time behind the gun. All the advice from above is from top level professionals I have learned from, researched or both. Don't listen to it and go find people who know their shit. No offense to this dude. But his setup won't work for 99% of people unless they live in the sticks with no family in other rooms, pets or livestock outside.
They’re a little less accurate but still combat effective, have a mild steel in the tip to punch through barriers without breaking apart- so shooting a bad guy through concealment the varmint may think is cover ie a car, wooden outbuilding, behind the kitchen cabinets etc
LPVOs gives the shooter the ability to aquire the target very quickly and it also allows for longer shots if necessary. I personally have a 12 gauge for home defense but if a rifle is what you have, especially an AR-15, the LPVO is good to go, not the only option but a good one.
you achieve near same stoping power with fmj and hp .223 the shock and FPS to that... the HP just make sure that the pullet not overpenetrate ( in case of .223 this dont help much in soft tissue the HP also penetrates like a Pro..).
Do you recommend a CZ Scorpion loaded with hollow point 9mm or a 10.5 inch AR-15 pistol with 5.56 for home defense? Also will the AR pistol be too load and blow my ears out?
A 556 pistol in a home with no ears on is gonna suck lol. They are way loud! Louder than most hunting rifles. 223s are the worst on the ears and combine that while being inside with a 10.5inch barrel and you'll definitely have some hearing loss. Unless you got hearing aids on. A 9mm scorpion would be a better option if you had kids in the house. I personally think. Not as loud and most likely wouldn't penetrate walls as deep. Easier for the wife and potentially small kids to shoot if you aren't home. These days though. Man those robbers break in by the 3's, 4's, and 5's. I'd get the AR pistol with a good 30rd mag and a solid muzzle break. Lol
9mm, man. I am talking about ballistics first, not just the sound as the guy above me said. I know someone that shot a 40 cal in the house, full metal jacket, it went through the corner of the wall, went through metal sheet, bended that open, went off the tile into the wood drawer partially connecting on the side, and then went into the wooden drawer and only then expanded. Hi there folks, we sort of live ln diffrent parts of the world. while i live in sweden we don’t have guns for homeprotection only for hunting, i have never expericened any form of hostility like burgurly or robbery in my home nor outside. Have any of you had to use a gun for that purpuse or is it most the feeling of being safe. Stay safe👍
I live in San Diego, USA. My area is generally safe, but there are many drug addicted homeless people in California now. I definitely don't feel safe in some places, and often have issues with aggressive homeless people here. Glad Sweden is so safe!
I don't know how the culture in Sweden is, but here in the U.S., firearms are a huge topic as they are part of our constitutional history and heritage. It isn't always about self protection. Funny enough, in my experience, the people who hunt regularly rarely talk about firearms, and most of the ones I talk to just know the basics like the difference between shotguns and rifles or popular rounds (.308, .223, 12 gauge etc.). It all depends on where you're located in the U.S. and who you talk to. Some folks just see firearms/shooting as a cool hobby. Those types are usually the ones who are adamantly against gun control, and are "loud & proud" when it comes to the second amendment. Then there people who have a gun for self defense, but rarely shoot, and never talk about firearms. I live in the south by the way. I've lived in four different states with one of those being up north for a brief time. It is interesting how different the thinking is among the different states and people. In my experience though, the more knowledgeable and experienced people with firearms are typically the least violent and aggressive. Yes, they'll talk your ears off about the constitution and hypothetical scenarios that they are prepared for, but I've personally never felt threatened by them. They usually see us (Americans) as all one team that should unite against tyranny and defend our rights.
Shawn Ryan of Vigilance Elite, ex-marine stated that green tip is bullshit, and they should have got rid of it a long time ago in the army. It goes through meat like butter, but doesn't fragment properly/doesn't expand, so the bullet creates a clean wound, but that's bad from point of impact. It doesn't stop the target right away, in fact it whizzes past the target into a wall/into a person/into a dog/into a car, into everything but the target you hitting to stop. My primary choice of home defense is not green tip, God forbid...it's not even a pistol, it's not an AR either, because all that shit will overpenetrate, unless you use hollow points/defense round that expand upon hitting flesh. Primary choice is a shotgun with 7.5 or 8 size shotshells, aka bird shot. The shit that will stop the person from the impact itself. Even if he is wearing a vest, it will throw him on his ass quite literally, or will make it impossible to breathe, or can distort the heart rhythm fatally just from impact itself, even if the vest catches that shit. Shotguns with birdshot are amazing, but not so amazing if you use buckshot or slugs, or your aim sucks. Buckshot will clear 3-4 walls straight through...DO NOT shoot 00 Buck/000 Buck in the house, anything that says BUCK is horrible if you have people around. Slugs are killer rounds, they will go through 4-5-6 walls through, do not...just fucking don't.
