This is a cult classic. you have no idea how happy it's made me you're watching it. Caroline Aherne who plays Denise is a comic legend, this show didn't need a laughing track, it just connected with people. Northern people may get this more than Southern people in England also can depend on your economic background too. But it definitely spoke to me this show! Keep at it with this one!
@artsed08
@artsed08 2 года назад
I disagree. Any English people, from Berwick to Bude understand the scenario and jokes in The Royle Family. The Alistair McGowan parody, with members of the Royal family replacing the Royles, made the point that everyone in the country, from whatever social background, sit together watching the telly and talking nonsense.
@JohnSmith-rw2yn

@@artsed08 I was coming more from my personal viewpoint which I should have made clearer. when I went to university I came across people from a far more privileged background than me and they just couldn't comprehend sat around the TV, people in and out the back door and a lot of the subtle jokes went over their heads. But I do take your point and can see how I came across.

Unlike most UK sitcoms of the time, the show was filmed in 16 mm film using single camera production style and was not filmed in front of an audience. The producer Glenn Wilhide is on record as saying, "It was a big fight to make sure it had no laugh track"

Ricky Tomlinson who plays Jim has a very interesting history . For years, he and others fought the British Establishment to clear their names after being jailed for a Construction Strike . In prison he first read the fantastic book ..The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists....which he said changed his life
@frglee
@frglee 2 года назад
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, despite the odd title, is a surprisingly good semi-autobiographical story by 'Robert Tressel', published after his death. It's very thoughtful and heartrending, about exploited working people around 1910 in Hastings, England. It's well written - almost worthy of a writer like Charles Dickens, writing half a century earlier. George Orwell thought very highly of it, not least because of its socialist message.

Also reminds me of growing up in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s. In a 3 bedroomed house, with only a gas fire in the lounge and no heating in the bedrooms. With a mother who was obsessed with lights. We were expected to all sit around the TV on the 3 piece suit every night, with one little lamp on top of the TV. I used to do my homework during breaktime at school, because my moth always claimed that putting on a 60 watt ceiling light "hurts my eyes".

Glad you liked it. This is an unusual and quite an original British sitcom, set in Manchester, quite observant as to working class family life in Britain, and tries to be honest and true to life, rather than melodramatic or silly. Practically all the story takes place in the Royle's living room. The humour comes from the banter between the characters and from some of the daftness and stresses of everyday life. It gets better as the series progress, even quite profound and touching in places. A strong cast too, who work very well together. It was very popular back in the day here.

@@davidz3879 Partly true, but Dave works full time, Barbara Royle works part-time at a bakery. Jim Royle doesn't work, he is in his early 60s and may be retired, he may just be workshy. His daughter Denise is also bone idle and apathetic and ends up when married relying on Dave to keep her in cigarettes and catalogue clothes, and is a pretty lazy mum too. Antony ends up as a successful businessman in later series, so he was pretty aspirational. Nana is a pensioner. Still seems more a working class family than 'underclass' to me.
