McLaren’s re-emergence as a Formula 1 race-winning force with Daniel Ricciardo’s victory in the Italian Grand Prix is the culmination of three years of improvement, but it was only possible because of the team’s painful rude awakening in the first half of 2018. In this video Edd Straw revisits how McLaren finally realised its problems were not all Honda's fault, and the big changes that were made to put the team back on the up.

McLaren could be like Red Bull with their Honda if the internal problem (+Alonso) doesn't ruin the plan project
@classicsportclassictiyl8547
@classicsportclassictiyl8547 2 года назад
@VERY EVIL PERSON FROM ILLUMINATI Alonso wasn't the problem Tim Goss was the problem he designed the McLaren's from 2013-18 he couldn't find and solve correlation issues with the 2013 and 14 cars, he forced Honda to design the engine to fit the car unlike Red Bull who said to Honda you design the engine we will make it fit in our car. Finally in 2018 he put the front axle in the wrong place and in 2018 he finally got fired and its no coincidence that in 2019 was a big improvement.

@nmdvalkyrie2862
@nmdvalkyrie2862 2 года назад
@@classicsportclassictiyl8547 I think Ron Dennis was also played a big part to the downfall in the mclaren honda. He was simply too ambitious and not patient enough. The way he handled the problem was really poor and he kept having problem with the investor and sponsorship. The reason why Alonso keep badmouthing the car was he promised and guaranteed by Ron Dennis a championship contender car, and what he got was very far from even a middle row car. Just see how calm and polite alonso to alpine this season compared to when him in mclaren honda. He didn't get a promise that he would get a championsip contender car, instead alpine ask him to work together to make a better car and work to challenge the championship in 2022 or 2023. You can argue that the reason alonso is calmer nowadays is because he is simply more mature now, but even if he did keep badmouthing mclaren honda because he didn't get what they promised to him, he still has a point.

The fact that McLaren seem to be a relatively happy home is promising enough. You do wonder what McLaren would be like now if Ron Dennis had managed to complete that proposed buy-out of the other shareholders a few years ago. Would it have continued heading toward basket-case status or would it have completed a similar turnaround?? I don't think they necessarily would have had as much fun as they have had under Zak Brown, he's given that team such a huge morale boost and you can see it in McLaren's Unboxed series.
@HumbertoSaabedra
@HumbertoSaabedra 2 года назад
It would have collapsed completely and they would be relegated to a historical footnote. The best thing Mansour Ojieh did was look at Ron's attempt to buy out the shareholders as a hostile bid to control a team that was clearly sinking under his direction. Dennis was stuck in his ways and refused any attempt to change for the sake of the team and the business, and that was costing the shareholders millions. He completely floundered when it became clear he would have to put in the actual footwork and effort on the commercial side to secure the team's financial foundation, instead of coming to terms with the fact that sponsors didn't care how great McLaren was, they wanted to know how McLaren was going to win. What a lot of people still don't realize is that Zak Brown was exactly the right person to succeed Dennis, it just took a long time for people to see just how much work he had to put in to clean up after Dennis' years of near catastrophic management.

We cannot downsize Ron's achievements as team principal, because he made Mclaren one of the most successful team in F1's history. I was sad, when he went away from the company, because in naivety I believed, he would make the team great again. But in retrospect, Dennis' departure is one of the best thing that happened with the team. His work ethics, perfectionism doesn't fit in the modern F1 anymore. As a committed Mclaren fanatic, I'm not wondering why many people didn't like them. Mclaren was too grey, too professional, too cold, too arogant... But as Zak and Andreas came in the leadership, they changed everything for the better. Today, Mclaren is nothing like the old days, it's a fun, lighthearted company full with optimism and also they are down to earth. There is nowhere the "we have the best chassis on the grid, only Honda is the one we can blame" bullshit... Instead of Zak said, okay we came home in 1-2, but there's still long way ahead of us. And that's why it's great we are no longer under Ron's leadership :)

Even if your coming plum last every race your still gathering alot more data than if you were breaking down on lap 3 every race. I’m still concerned that Dan says the car is hard to drive, but if they get him involved in the 2022 car, they could be up there next year, as it is a real interesting reset year. They also have one of the most talented, if not the most talented, driver line ups.

Is there any correlation with lap times from Top Gear? Same car, same track. We all, as motor sport fans love a fast lap. But Damn... Lewis had 2 goes, and ripped awesome times, but Daniel beat him. Fastest ever lap.. Never forgetting 🇦🇺🤣

Hmmm, "disconnected management" and "a team that simply wasn't enjoyable to work with anymore" Sounds alot like WIlliams when you really think about it. (Especially with how Jost Capito described their Hierachy prior to him coming over). It makes it all the more enjoyable that both are doing so much better, hopefully 22' is the year where they are more closer to the teams I saw when I first started watching Formula 1 in 2004.

Would have been nice to go into the 2018 gaps that were revealed, you all basically just glossed over it - after in much detail outlining the opening season 5th place result vis Alonso - and went right to the restructuring. What were the average lap time gaps, quali position gaps, race finish gaps,, etc vs its baseline Renault powered RedBull?

Excellent video. Please dive into McLaren’s decline and rise in another vid. I do believe that McLaren will be able to introduce a championship challenge within a few years. It’s hard to predict what 2022 will bring but, given that Zak Brown is an amazing leader and that Andreas Seidl is a genius, I think Danny and Lando will succeed.

Tim Goss was the problem he designed the McLaren's from 2013-18 he couldn't find and solve correlation issues with the 2013 and 14 cars, he forced Honda to design the engine to fit the car unlike Red Bull who said to Honda you design the engine we will make it fit in our car. Finally in 2018 he put the front axle in the wrong place and in 2018 he finally got fired and its no coincidence that in 2019 was a big improvement.

I love seeing McLaren claw it’s way back into the sport’s top echelon. The still have work to do but they’ve got the team working in the right direction and 2022 is going to be fun to watch. I’ve been a huge fan ever since the Bruce and Denny show and I’ll always remember 1974 when Emerson Fittipaldi brought their first World Championship.

Zak and Andreas are the bosses we all wish we had. I started watching F1 in 2019, so watching this video makes me know that this 1-2 finish was wayyyyy more for people that have been watching for years. Making the connection from Hamilton, on why he left.....finding out Sergio Perez was apart of McLaren!?......and just seeing how a dark orange/black car became the blue and papaya. I'm so happy for McLaren, and their futures. Lando and Daniel are going places. I want McLaren vs Ferrari vs Red Bull vs Mercedes!!

Other than the drivers the rise of McLaren can be attributed to Siedl and Zak's easy go mentality by not pressurising the team or drivers. This win will do Ricciardo's confidence a big boost and he has just shown he can hold off Max better than Bottas in a Merc. That Toro Rosso color scheme in the video made it look exactly like a Red Bull drink can.

Exactly. Mclaren has gone through financial troubles in the last 2-3 years. Remember they were lucky in finding new money resources at the beginning of this seasons and there were already rumors about them trying to get rid of Ricciardo because of his big paycheck. Yes they got 3rd in the constructors last season and they might get 3rd this seasons as well but I highly doubt we will see them on the same level of Ferrari RB and Mercedes next season

Clearly mcl squandered a great opportunity to keep Honda in F1 by basically throwing them under the bus and being cocky confident of their aero package. Sometimes a little humility goes a long way. And this is where Zack and Andreas really make a difference. They have certainly turned around MCL. Looking forward to next season. This coming from a Ferrari fan

Being a Lewis Hamilton fan, I remember suffering the frustrations of a team that performed in a rudderless senior management vacuum in the four years after Lewis won his first WDC. In fact the decline had already started in 2007, where McClaren literally threw away the constructors championship with Ferrari gate and also donated the WDC to Kimi with ridiculous race management at China and Brazil - the latter compounding a mysterious gearbox issue in Hamilton’s car that served to slow him down enough in the first few laps and resulted in him losing the WDC by ONE point. The decline gained pace in 2009 where McClaren were wrong footed by the new regulations that saw Brawn win both championships. And the rot really set in in 2010, 11 and 12 where despite having a fast car and Lewis Hamilton’s brilliance, the inept team management resulted in performances plagued by poor reliability, and unforgivably bad race management. I totally remember the week in week out frustration of watching the brilliance of Lewis Hamilton continually undermined by poor team strategy, poor team execution and poor reliability. And when Ross Brawn and the late Nikki Lauda started to court Lewis Hamilton in 2012, I was praying that he would leave McClarens sinking ship and join a team headed by Ross who had proven his ability to run a team to exploit the best talent on grid with his achievements with Ferrari and Michael Schumacher. I remember the likes of Martin Brundle seriously questioning Lewis’s decision to move to Mercedes in 2012, but I was applauding and celebrating the move. And of course how the McClaren ship sinking continued in the years that followed Hamilton’s departure. The 2013 car designed without input from Lewis Hamilton was a disaster. In 2012 McClaren finished 3rd in constructors championship. In 2013,14 and 15 they finished 5th, 5th and 9th respectively. It’s good to see that the management have finally sorted themselves out and the team are now looking like the pedigree outfit that McClaren once were.

I think any predictions to the future performance of all the cars in F1 is sort of guess work. The huge change in the design & I’d guess mostly the 18” wheels will have a dramatic effect on all teams. Along with the cap on spending of course. I do hope the 2022 changes close the gap of the BIG 2 and the mid pack.

Brown literally rebuilt the whole F1 team. He broke it down back to the foundation and rebuilt from there. Bring Seidel and Key in was such a genius move too. Brown saved the team and Seidel and Key supported that. They are all legends. I’m so stoked on McLaren’s upbringings.

I was very sceptical about Brown when he was appointed.. I thought he was just a marketing guy who sold advertising.. how wrong I was .. him and Seidel have turned McLaren around and a great decision to give Sainz and Lando race seats. Honda partnership was a disastrous period .. thank god they’ve gone back to Merc.

I don't think people realise just how bad the situation was at Mclaren a little over 3 years ago. It took Zak time to settle in with the team and understand the context of the problems but he bit the bullet in mid 2018 knowing that it may not pay off but it did. There's always been life in the team, it's just about whether they could be consistent and whether they were able to overcome the struggles that to them weren't so obvious.
