The Rustiest Bus I've Ever Seen

When I bought this bus two years ago I had no idea what I was getting into, I honestly thought the body would just need a few repairs and I'd be able to keep it on the road the whole time. Blissful ignorance really. But that's OK because I'm learning so much along the way and so grateful for this experience that I've dreamed of since I was young. Thanks for following along this journey with me. -Brandon

Props for spraying POR 15; it can get everywhere. I chickened and used the brush on my 55 frame as I wasn't worried about "show quality" - just protection.

The inner nose structure was particularly tough, I didn't film most of it but there may have been times I wished I had spent the $400. But with enough time welding, grinding, hammering it came out aight. :)

Congratulations on the project. you have a Volkswagen bus manufactured in Brazil in 1974 or 1975, I can recognize it by the color, alabaster beige. It has the emblem stamped on the front, this was manufactured in 73, 74 and 75. but the beige color only in 74 and 75. the only difference from 74 and 75 is the fuel tank door that in 75 came without the lock. I really like this model because the metal used in the body is more malleable and does not fatigue causing cracks. it is also easier to work on a restoration. In Brazil there were some variations in the use of raw materials when VWs were built. It is possible to put an emblem over the one that is stamped on the front, but they are a little wider than the 60 and 61 for example. here in Brazil you can find them from 1967 onwards, they fit perfectly. If you need help with a part in Brazil, I can try to do it for you.
@BrandonsBus
@BrandonsBus Год назад
The title says 74! You really know your VW stuff. Thanks for the tip about the emblem, Ill be needing one after I get the nose panel in place.

Hi love your work getting lots of tips and learning from you im restoring my old Honda civic struggling to get rid of rust as everytime i grind it down to bear metal and coat with primer and paint a year later the rust is back as the paint dont hold up to weather..tried many different paints primers alway cleaning and preparing meticulously but never lasts! I bought expensive POR even that came off in weather..please can you advise me on a good paint and primer that will last long?many thanks im so sad seeing my beautiful car rust away 😢
@BrandonsBus
@BrandonsBus Год назад
hello Tony, thanks for the comment. No matter what paint or primer goes overtop of rust, the metal has to be chemically converted first, sometimes multiple times until all the rust is removed and only pitting is left. I use ospho which is phosphoric acid that converts iron oxide into iron phosphate. No matter if its epoxy primer, POR or rattle can- the rusty metal needs many hours of prep to hold up to weather. Im not an expert by any means but this is what I have learned so far.
