Starscream should have been an Autobot, if anything the Matrix of Leadership itself was telling him this, he could have even been an actual legitimate Prime.
There's a cruel sort of salvation in this abuse as well, given that Starscream was utterly broken at this point, Megatron gave him purpose in his failures by saying he needed them to rule most effectively. While a far cry from actual mental help or the care and attention he actually needs, it's a small thing to hold onto. Megatron practically twisted Starscreams depression to serve him. Now that, is evil.
Stockholm syndrome who? seriously, if someone ever is in an abusive relationship and doesn't want to end it, show them this. it's tragic how textbook it is.
I find myself understanding Starscream even though he is a Decepticon. I also think he is funny. Starscream is the only Decepticon I have seen to do something about being taken for granted by Megatron. I though can relate to Thundercracker because I understand his fear since I have a hard time standing up for myself.
Funny enough, this Megatron eventually becomes an autobot and is easily one of the most complex characters in this continuity. Meanwhile, starscream actually does take a leadership role on Cybertron in this post-war setting.
@Charisma Clayton Yeah, they had a lot of fights, I think Megatron needs a long process to change his ways and realize that "those minor things" are also wrong, because it's obvious that he now regrets his actions and the long war, suffering and death he caused but understanding that he also harmed people by being abusive (either physically or verbally) is something that he will have to keep learning along the way. The writer of the comic said he would have liked to explore his relationship with Starscream but unfortunately he didn't have time and had to wrap up a lot of things up which made the ending look quite rushed sadly.
@Charisma Clayton At that point, he was still learning how to do things the Autobot way. And let's be honest, Rodimus provoked Megatron too. However, after Megatron is left behind in the Functionist Universe and then comes back a couple of issues later, he doesn't fight with Rodimus. That's because he had spent 800 years outside of the universe where he came from and that's enough time for him how to control his anger and that he doesn't have to argue with anyone about anything. Reading post FU Megatron, it gives me the vibes of a much calmer Megatron
@@MrNetWraith He proved to be a much better politician than military leader and barely worse than many "great" leaders on Earth right now. He was still a criminal *and* a bad person, but he was a much more interesting person once the war ended.
To be honest, IDW comics is a series of tragedies which lines up to tell the story of Cybertronian, making people love, cry, rage and wail with the characters, ended up our hearts feeling tearing apart but with no tears to drop and no voice to cry.
@@Rubywing4 Seriously, right? nowadays, a series with depth, whether tv or paper, is a crime. everything is soft, and overexplained or simplified. people are too soft to take hardcore antagonists, and too stupid to figure out whats going on unless it neatly packaged and dumbed down for them. Not to mention the blurred lines of morals that the bay films dance with
@@GvB127 SO true. RID 2015 is a "good" example of this. Every "villain" is kind of lame, and the big antagonists are done dirty (Megatronus and Starscream, and I think also Soundwave). And finally the GOOD GUYS are also kind of lame, don't learn their lessons and a bit dumb, and Bumblebee and Optimus are both also done dirty. I do love IDW, the comment I made before was meant to be sarcastic or ironic in a funny way, not really sure what the difference is between the two, even when I look it up, because sarcasm doesn't always have to be mean when making jokes on it.
I hate seeing Starscream get treated so awfully because he’s one of my favorite characters, though what cheers me up (oddly enough) is how his story ends in the Regeneration 1 comics, where he and Shockwave end up running away together, eventually pick up Ravage, and all three of them travel around the universe in the Ark. He gets out. He’s free, and it just makes me really happy
In Transformers Prime, there's a episode where Optimus Prime tries to convince Starscream to turn into a good person and he ordered the autobots not to attack Starscream but Starscream ends up breaking his trust
Starscream should have been an Autobot, if anything the Matrix of Leadership itself was telling him this, he could have even been an actual legitimate Prime.
If he was willing to atone for his mistakes and actually wanted to change for the better, I'd forgive him. I don't think he'd fully deserve it, but I just would.
As I am closely aligned to both Unicron and Primus. I would have punished Starscream for failing to lead the Decepticons. However, not to the malicious degree as Megatron. To give a bone for a chance to stand against me in the end future, that I am merciful to all. There are some stories where I would have chosen a different outcome. If I was in Megatron's position, then lead the hand of the redeemer rather than the executioner. However, unlike Megatron or Optimus. If the entire cosmos proves to be a failure at the end of Fate. No matter of the infinite futures... I will inevitably end everything in existence, and from there, I will make the final choice. To give the cosmos her life once more, or to finally end the cycle while I slumber for countless eternities. A bitter sweet ending, but one, I am willing to carry out to the very end. Or at least... I would do so. But what I say and what I do is kin to Unicron and Primus... Even I would construct a weapon to be the third voice in which all shall be judged. But such a weapon will require the Spark of a true Prime... One who is worthy to challenge my will.
@@absolstoryoffiction6615 a decepticon leader is not merciful, they are practical. And starscream failed that. Megatron expected better from the embodiment of the decepticon cause. When the chips fell, starscream fumbled when needed by the decepticon cause.
The cruelest part of it all? The Matrix of Leadership respond well with Starscream, and not Megatron. This means that Starscream has a shot of being a leader, but not the crowd his currently in.
Maybe he ought to take an idea from thundercracker and just leave. Say he’s going on patrol then never come back. I’m sure that Thundercracker might be a bit more accepting of Starscream this time seeing as Ss has nowhere else to go
The thing is with Starscream, he has the potential, but is constantly overshadowed. Hence why he wants to kill Megatron all the time, I suppose. Makes you think.
@@matthewcaughey8898Starscream's kind of a notorious Decepticon, so the moment he leaves, he could incite more cons to leave even if he lacked respect. And that's when the Decepticon Justice Division pops up.
@@MrHAH-cd9ku starscream is a bad leader, WAY better than megatron but not as good as someone like bee, If he realized his potential and how to use it, he Could even match someone like ultra magnus, but the simple fact that he is, well, starscream, makes him as megatron says: a coward
I actually fully relate to this Starscreams pain. I too wish to be a leader, not for myself, but to strengthen and inspire others to become stronger. If I were in Starscream's shoes, I would have desired death as well. Not just for my failures as a leader in that case, but my failures to be able to keep my men safe and well.
Stuff like this is what set IDW apart from all of the others and truly made us love all of the characters that much more. They weren’t just Saturday morning cartoon filler characters anymore, they have actually been given depth and purpose in their stories.
And to think that he wanted to overthrow Megatron this whole time. Man was I wrong. He just wanted to be respected and loved by the Decepticon, but of course it backfires on him.
This is, this is.. wow, I always thought that Star Scream was just comic relief. I’m not really a huge fan of Transformers, but the writers were definitely going through something. This is almost TOO deep.
That's what I love about also feel sorry for good writers. They clearly went through some things in life, and it's messy sometimes. But they have the maturity to not use it as an excuse for bad behavior, and rather use that passion to tell fictional stories as a lesson for those in a similar situation through relative safety of the medium.
Starscream got his revenge during Megatron's trial. Insulting his intelligence, telling he lost control of the decepticons during the war,... the list goes on. And what's even better, Megatron knew he deserved that lashing.
@@returnedtomonkey8886, Starscream legit just returned the favour from this comic and saved Megatron from suicide in the most vile and demeaning way he possibly could.
@@tsm688 After the end of the war, Megatron was put on trial. Starscream went to testify and unloaded all his frustations in one elaborated speech that insulted his intelligence.
This Starscream reminds me much of the Armada one. Originally though that Starscream incarnation was different before meeting humans, to which he sacrificed himself after to Unicron.
It ain't just any cruelty. It's almost abusive love. Megatron still gives Starscream credit for his scheming behavior. He literally admitted to appreciating Starscream for helping him be a better and more vigilant leader and that in an ideal world, Starscream would actually be the perfect Decepticon.
This made me cry twice, he just wants to have respect and to be cared about. All he gets is depression and anxiety. He's humiliated in front of everyone, he doesn't gain anyone's respect, not even his leader. The abuse verbal, emotional, physical is enough to make him lose faith, hope, and will. He does and doesn't deserve the punishment, there is so much going on in Starscream's life that brings him down, he will offline himself if it keeps up. Megatron doesn't need to bring him down if something wasn't his fault. If you hate Starscream now, you may reconsider if you think about how much Megatron brings him down and abuses him. Thank you for reading this.
Dude I cried too. A lot. Similar to Starscream, all I’ve ever wanted in my life is respect and love, but I only receive pain and torment from my peers. I’m so happy my high school days are now behind me. This comic with Starscream gives off the same mood of my high school experience. Pain and suffering, physically and emotionally, despite trying my best to fit in. I never had the pleasure of a first girlfriend. I had only one friend, who I vowed to protect with my life. Although uncommon, whenever something bad happened to them, whether it be physically or mentally, I felt tremendous guilt, even if it was outside of my control. I felt like I’ve failed them, and would be crushed with guilt and self-blame for days, sometimes even weeks. Even now after high school, I feel horrible about my experiences, kind of a form of PTSD if that makes any sense. After seeing just how hard everyday life can be, I’ve almost completely lost faith in living a happy life, and have lost hope that things will get better. Sometimes, I barely had any energy or motivation to get out of bed. Half the nights I cried myself to sleep. I adopted the mindset of do what needs to be done and nothing more, and became somewhat of an autonomous machine. And all this went on for FOUR YEARS. If you read this 11 months later, thank you. Even though you’re just an internet stranger, it sometimes helps me to unload my life story on someone who can understand or connect with the experiences I’ve gone through.
Starscream is and will always be my favorite TF. Such an awesome character. Makes me wonder why after all his failed attempts he hasn’t just gone off on his own permanently, neither decepticon or Autobot, but something else.
There have been instances where Starscream has revealed something about how he’s alone, disrespected and unable to reach out for help, because Megatron will inevitably beat him down emotionally and physically. He expects to be punished even when he’s undeserving of it and triggers Megatron to get the incident over with. He acts out, trying to be noticed, even if being noticed gets him slagged (by Autobots or other Decepticons as well as Megatron). We also get to see that, over the vorns, Starscream’s initial hero worship has been twisted by fear and resentment, but he’s unable to flee; he’s burnt too many bridges... These are all documented, but lesser known, abuse victim behaviours. This one issue really, really shook me and proved that comics have truly grown up. It’s a compact example of both sides in an abusive relationship and viscerally more powerful than the confrontation Megatron engineers in the Armada cartoon. I couldn’t read it in one sitting and, yes, I wept. What makes it all the more painful is the knowledge that Starscream has sacrificed everything to bring Megatron back online in the new, more powerful body he uses to wreck his already beaten SIC. You can find more information on abuse on reputable internet sites and books.
Something similar comes in a line from Starscream in Transformers: Armada; to Megatron, Starscream says, "I tried to gain favor from you, but nothing I did was ever good enough." I and many others have probably felt the same way or said this to someone in our own lives, whether a loved one, or our boss, or someone else important to us. The characterizations of Starscream that I have most enjoyed (or even gravitated to) are those that embrace the very human emotions that come from intense loyalty. Starscream wanted someone to recognize him, to look at him and see someone dependable, to see the things he has spent his life trying to accomplish; being constantly shot down without remorse builds a self-fulfilling prophecy of bungling and failure, where he knows he is expected to fail, so he subconsciously enters into an engagement expecting to fail too. When you know it's impossible to succeed, not because you actually can't succeed, but because it doesn't matter to the person you look to for acceptance whether you succeed or not, life starts to lose meaning, as can be seen in IDW's Starscream in this particular issue. Perhaps the saddest part was that, even in the moments where he opened fire on Megatron, it was likely rooted in his very loyalty to him: 'Can't you see what condition I'm in? How could you be so cruel?' Starscream needs a hug.
We need a story in any show or comic where starscream gets a proper redemption arc and the help he needs, as this is usually pushed to the side even when the story is going that way just so starscream can be the punching bag or the butt of a joke.
I agree. Megatron was given a redemption arc and I'm not saying he shouldn't have one, but Megatron is the cause of Starscream becoming what he became. Starscream deserves redemption and love too. He never wanted the war and was always saying how he thought it was a long drawn out conflict, saying things like "If I was in charge the war would've been over eons ago." But Megatron is so wrapped up in his own bitterness, resentment, and hatred of how he was treated as a miner and his determination to conquer the universe that he has completely ignored the damage that he's done emotionally, physically, and psychologically to Starscream. He needs to pay it forward to Starscream in some way.
@@kiranmason4943 I think the closest times we've gotten to a Starscream redemption arc was when he temporarily defected to the Autobots in Armada, and when he rejoined the Decepticons in Season 3 of Prime
There is a prime fanfic out there, where Starscream is killed and Optimus brings him back. Using his spark and living inside him before fading into sleep. And Starscream tries to repent and fix his misdeeds.
Starscream needs to join the autobots. I feel like deep down he isn't evil. He only is on the evil team because he feels like he belongs nowhere else. So he endures the abuse
I remember buying an anniversary megatron and reading this comic. At the time I laughed at starscream's punishment, now I feel bad after seeing the context of the comic
I knew Megatron was a sick bastard but god, i didnt know he could go this dark! It makes me think there really was some kind of relationship between Megatron and Starscream at this point. The way Megatron takes joy in torturing Starscream feels all too similar to a warped, bitter husband beating his wife. It feels really personal.
More the useful idiot. Who has dreams but not the potential. And he realizes it. Megatron is a manipulative bastard most of the time. And those ideals that he claims to have, actually never existed. Or maybe they did but are drowned out by his ambitions.
Megatron had it rough in IDW too. He went through a lot before the war started. If you read up on his backstory, you can understand why Megatron is the way he is.
@Crimson The Thunder Knight Did you read the comics? Before the events of "All hail Megatron, which is when the "Abuse of Starscream" takes place, Starscream tried to kill Megatron by supercharging himself with ore 13. Before the Autobot Decepticon war, Starscream was a scammer. He would con people out of money. Eventually he became a senator and when got tired of the politics, he scammed his constituents out of their money and quit. He then used this money to recruit Skyward and Thundercracker. Starscream then convinced those two to change their bodies so that they would look identical to Starscream. He did this so that it would make it harder for him to be jailed for tax evasion. Starscream is not innocent at all here. He got what was coming to him
@@screeee1466 He killed other politicians during the election of Cybertron's new ruler so that he could win. During his time as leader Starscream did jack shit to save the planet from threats. When the Titans threatened to destroy the planet Starscream got so scared, that he wanted to give up his position as the new ruler of Cybertron and let everyone fend for themselves. You also completely ignored the fact that Starscream tried to assassinate Megatron, (the one person that took him in) shortly after they got to Earth. There's also the stuff that he did to Windblade. If you actually READ the IDW comics, you'd know how much of a scumbag he was in that universe.
This is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. Starscream deserves better followers than the Decepticons and most of all, he deserves a better leader than Megatron.

Here’s one deep from a very old and very deep emotional scar I’ve had with me for a very long time. This is a starscream I can relate to. My mother I think always got a rush out of hurting me emotionally, it seemed to give her pleasure since she couldn’t physically hurt me. Had I been this starscream I probably would have left the leading to soundwave and just vanished. In real life I did just that and tried to put as much distance between my mother and myself as I could. It’s been over 20 years since I did that and this has dredged up memories I thought forgotten. I would have written this as Starscream just left and nobody ever saw him again. Maybe he found what he was looking for somewhere out there in the infinite void
I'm sorry to hear how badly your mother treated you, brother. I can't relate to it exactly but, my mother ran away from me. Twice. Once when I was 2 and the other when i was 13. I wont forget the crying nights I had asking "why can't she visit me?" I eventually got help and learned to forgive her. Even got asked twice if I would want to see her again. I answered; "No. She had her second chance." I had no hatred in my heart for her. But I know she cared about me enough to know i was safe and well raised with my grandparents. I'm not gonna try to pretend to be a psychiatrist or anything but I do hope that one day, you could make peace with not only your mother, but with yourself as well. God bless you man.
@@EclipseHedgehog it’s been rough I’m not going to lie. We talk and occasionally celebrate some holidays. But I’ve built my own life since those days and I’ve done what I can to move on
This version of Starscream *ACTUALLY* shattered my heart… he was a lot like his Armada incarnation in terms of loyalty to Megatron, but constantly being berated, humiliated, and beaten to the point of his psyche breaking and begging for Megatron to just end it is… truly heartbreaking… no one should have to suffer like that… fictional or not…
Sometimes you’ve got to see your situation is not going to change and you’ve got to effect your own change. For me it was seeing where I worked. I was never going to get a pay raise. And there was a coworker who liked to mess with people and wasn’t willing to quit. I realized that I needed to be the change I sought. Ultimately I found a better emotional situation and the happiness that I was looking for. If starscream just cleared out then maybe he might find something worth pursuing either like thundercracker living on earth as a free cybertronian or maybe joining the autobots and seeing what it’s like actually fighting for a purpose
@@matthewcaughey8898 Thing is, he's manipulated into believing he deserves abuse. He's manipulated into believing this is normal. He believes there's no way out because of Megatron, and the other Decepticons. He _can't_ just get out. He needs help
Because I love IDW so much, I'm leaving a second comment. Starscream is, like Megatron and Ratchet, a perfect representation of what IDW2005's Transformers run represents. Starscream isn't some body, and a name used to sell toys, he isn't a Flanderized husk of pervious iterations. Starscream is what makes IDW great. He is a person. Having been beaten, and hurt. Having been redeemed and praised. He is a person with a life that is told throughout IDW's run. And what is possibly the most beautiful thing in that universe is his final appearance. Where he states that its okay if he's not remembered for being a savior. That he's just happy being remembered.
What's crazy about this is that some people are like that. This kind of stuff happens in real life. It's what make this comic good. That's why I respect writers man. The fact that they can put such realistic personalities and emotions into fictional, sci-fi, fantasy characters.
my eyes are leaking- starscream just wanted to be appreciated because all he ever got was abuse and hate from not just Megatron, but he was ignored and not cared about by all the other decepticons. honestly that hurts a lot :(
Honestly the comics are the darkest, they actually eat each other, suffer, and never win fights. They are even injured for long periods of time. Really makes you cry. :,(
It's always so fascinating to examine the motivations of the "bad guys" - especially the ones who are fundamentally flawed, like Starscream (or the ones like Megatron, who are authentically sociopathic & megalomaniacal).
Starscream was and still is my favorite transformer. I really live this type of story. But got really sad that starscream was overshadow on the end. Starscream really is a great transformer with more than just the "coward one"
Okay this Megatron is just outright scary, IDW universe over all have been a wild ride so far tbh. What is that funny holiday special again my sanity might really need it-
Wait a second...am I hearing this right? The Decepticons came to be starving to death on an asteroid in the middle of nowhere... BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T RESPECT STARSCREAM TO THE POINT THEY STOPPED TAKING CARE OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR EMPIRE? Holy crap, if that's true then the 'cons deserved to go out like that!
Also because he's genuinely incompetent, decepticons respect power which starscream doesn't have. Shockwave fulfilled his entire plan because he knew how, starscream doesn't. And to be honest, I wouldn't respect my leader if he was a living punching bag either.
"Tired of the bone-deep chill of losing, Starscream? Then stand WITH me" I think that says everything about Megatron and Starscream. That and "... I almost mean it". Megatron feels as though Starscream needs him. He somewhat admires the viciousness and cunning that Starscream holds within him. He sees the potential he holds, maybe even fears it. He would never kill Starscream because deep down he needs him too. But as the brutal warlord he is, he can't stand the idea of Starscreams aspirations blossoming, so he keeps him in check, feeding his own toxic lust for cruelty that truly makes him evil rather than the liberator he claims to be. I think the war truly warped them both.
Megatron shows what a leader who treats his people like slaves looks like. Optimus Prime shows us what being a leader and treating everyone as equals is like
Dude the fact that the decepticons were eating each other just shakes me to the core. I need to read the comic with that moment. The speech bubbles just freak me out 😰
Why can't we get this star scream with the good Megatron that loves his troops that would be nice having two characters that treat each other like brothers who respects each other
I think what I want most for this Starscream is for his fight to end with him just talking. Even though he knows Megatron is still going to beat the everloving shit out of him, I just want starscream to just say what I is thinking, and for Megs to listen for a bit.
This echoes back to the G I Joe cartoon(just not as sadistic or brutal). In the episodes where Serpentor gains leadership of Cobra, Cobra Commander ends up saving Serpentor and delivers an excellent rebuttal when Serpentor threatens him. Essentially Serpentor needs a scapegoat. He's brilliant, and charismatic. However, he's also violent, arrogant, stubborn, and unstable. Serpentor needs Cobra Commander to assume his failures. Starscream is similar. He's needed because he offers EXACTLY what the Decepticons philosophy dictates. A hunger and ambition to gain power, but the inability to wield the power as well as Megatron. So even if Starscream has moments of glory, his failures, either his own OR Megatron's are to portray that iron fist. No matter how competent, or cunning Starscream is, That only Megatron can lead, despite failing often himself. Starscream is the scapegoat.
PFF. *THIS IS GREAT, BUT THIS WAS SO SHORT BESIDES TO* _I TRIED TO GAIN FAITHFUL FROM YOU, BUT NOTHING WAS EVER GOOD ENOUGH, NO MATTER HOW MANY BATTLES I FOUGHT YOU ALWAYS FOUND ME A FAULT, BUT THEN I SAW HOW OPTIMUS THREATED HIS MEN & I REALISED THAT HE WAS A LEADER WITH INTEGRITY, UNLIKE YOU_
After reading this…oh my gosh. All Starscream wants is for just someone to see he exists. Not selfish, or greedy, just depressed. Now when you really think about it, Starscream isn’t a bad bot. And honestly I think he deserves to be leader more than Megatron.
this actually sounds like an emotional and deep story ill definitely look into; just the summery made me really sympathize with starscream. i just want to say that many of the panel showed in the videos are really well drawn and i might try to re draw them in my own style.
Omg that's so sad 😞 I've always loved Starscream, and I always will! Thank you for the story, I've learned a little bit more of one of my favorite decepticons.
I can see why do you want to talk About the pain I'm a great listener and want to help you through the pain that Megatron couldn't help himself but inflict
This honestly hurts.... IDW is just.... The worst thing is that whwn you read more than meets the eye you really like Megatron... and if you also Love IDW starscream (like me) it just leaves you with weird feelings... . Anyway I must say that IDW comics are great and I am looking forward to more content like this. Keep up The Great work
Imagine we got good films that went into detail like this, brining this moment to life and having Starscream have some kind of redemption. Perhaps a hero before he dies. Yeah, that would be nice
Starscream has been betrayed by his own mother, abused, betten, rejected and now this.FRAGG U MEGATRON!!!!I can't keep my favorite character like this. I am sorry Starscream.
i haven't gotten around to reading the comics but from what i know, if starscream left and put the effort of being a leader in to being a good one, he'd do very well at it.
Aside from the obvious, what also gets me here is that in every iteration I've seen (which is admittedly far from all all), Megatron routinely treats Starscream with massive disrespect despite his high rank, using him as a scapegoat and punching bag. Megatron sets up a long standing precedent of Star not being respected, so it is no surprise he isn't respected should he be put in a position of being leader. Even if some do regard him well, as after all he is highly intelligent and capable, the sheer tide of so many others still following Megatron's example would inevitably sway the whole group against him. Megatron set all this up himself.... then he takes it out on Star when he is revived and sees his abused second can't manage leadership, as though Star himself is entirely to blame? Yeah, Megatron can go take a swan dive into a black hole.
Actually megatron is dissappointed with StarScream's resolve. Megatron sees him as the embodiment of the decepticon cause. Has nobody read all hail megatron?
Damn, now I understand why this generation is so messed up. In past generations it was about thrusting in the knife and getting it over with. Now it's about how you twist it after it's in causing more pain for self affirmation, truly sick. If the decepticons were willing to cannibalize each other for their golden calf Megatron, as Starscream, I would have jetted out of there a long time ago.
