What kind of person puts a thumbs down to their sufferings ?They have survived homelessness, hunger and poverty and both Raynor and Moth deserve more than your pathetic thumbs down. They turned defeat into a wonderful triumph, whatever you do,read this book, you won't regret it.

Hello my name is Aaron and I’m walking the uk coast 12,000 miles, to raise awareness of mental health and homelessness issues. I started from Southampton and I’ll finish back at Southampton in 2 years time. I started 3 weeks ago and I’ve made it to Swanage so far. I’ve never felt so good as I have in the last 3 weeks. It’s truly liberating 🧘‍♂️🙏

@@BadgerBotherer1 I am back in Southampton now but didn't complete my mission. Had to come home due to family issues. I still live in a tent in nature and still help the homeless as much as possible 🙏❤️🧘‍♂️

been caring for my old mate in the QE Hospital in Birmingham . This masterpiece got me through 4 hectic and worrying days. Loved the determination of Raynor and Moth and the unconditional love between them . The words are almost poetic throughout this " Diary " Brilliant distraction from my own problems . Raynor Winn ? Found this book on my shelf. Couldn’t remember buying it and wasn’t sure I wanted to read it. Decided to give it a chance and from page 1 I was hooked. Heartbreaking, shocking, funny and a lesson in what happens when you lose everything and life is stripped back to the bare minimum; and it’s something of a revelation. A brilliant, emotional and engaging book - highly recommended.

I read this book in a day, just couldn't put it down, it has inspired myself to walk the swcp, and put into perspective my cancer diagnosis, and being sacked from , a job I really loved. Also read Raynors, second and third books, brilliantly written.

I was mesmerized by their harrowing plight and at the same time their dogged perseverance and gradual change from victims to inspirationals. So happy for Moth to despite ‘doctor’s orders’ practically defeated his disease. I just finished the sequence “the wild silence” and once again was moved by Raynor’s poetical description of the landscapes they not only molded with their own hands around a derelict farm they became guardians of, but also of the harsh and rugged landscapes in Iceland where they went on a path again. So happy for both of them! 💕🍀👏🙋🏼‍♀️

I so love this book. I bought it in the summer and was totally inspired by Ray and Moth. Ray's descriptions of their journey are so vivid that I lived every day if their journey with them. I am reading it again now and know that I will keep coming back to it. My love and best wishes to them both.

Have ordered this, so looking forward to reading this. Part of me fumes as the circumstances that pushed you out of your home, but celebrates the fact that it brought you such gifts. And such joy and pleasure to other people. I have walked the 500-mile pilgrim path across the north of Spain and it is lovely. I remember the smell of distant snow as we crossed the mountains of the Wild Goose. And walking past neanderthal settlements where some ancient peoples had lived half a million years ago. We live on an old earth. But we did not sleep in tents but in pilgrim hostels and we ate pilgrim fodder in restaurants every night. So while beautiful, not the same experience at all. You inspire me to go further. Raynor, you might like a trilogy by Patrick Leigh Fermor about walking across Europe when he was 18, just before the war. It is funny and beautiful too. Wishing you both so well.

I live in San Francisco in the U.S., bought this book a week ago, have been glued to it since then, & just finished it a few minutes ago. Wow! what a deeply profound & thought-provoking experience Raynor & Moth have had. It really has opened my eyes & heart to the many overlapping themes she writes about. I’m grateful to Raynor for writing her memoir & I send her & her family all the best! P.S. It would be nice to get a follow-up memoir. 🕊🌿🌸🦢

What a wonderful, brave book. My family and I have been going to our cottage for 40 years, which is a short walk to Portheras Cove. We call it "our" beach and love it very much so you can imagine how much your book meant to me. I wish you a great success with it.

What a deeply honest and brilliantly written book. Loved it, not least because of the deep connection with nature shown by the author. After all the hardship she and Moth have been through, I really hope that the success of this book has eased their financial situation and that they are still living in Cornwall. Thanks Raynor - write another one now please !

I've never read a biography before as they've just not appealed to me but thought I'd give this a try as I love Cornwall. What can I say except that I feel humbled and inspired after finishing the book last night. As someone else suggested, this would make a great book. Please write another one asap!

This is a beautiful book...I am 50+ and am on tenterhooks at this age myself, not knowing what will happen...it could go either way for me and my husband (I am always hopeful for us, mind you!). But this book has given me some peace at this time!

Totally superb book! Cried at the start and the end and a few times in between. Only publisher’s typo that I noticed was bottom of p.260 (It’s should have been Its). What an amazing couple and family, bless them, dear, dear souls! 💖😊💖

I knew the premise and was excited to be inspired by this book, but somehow it didn't do too much for me personally. I hoped to learn more about the areas they travelled to, but generally the book just repeats the author's internal thoughts of "why am i doing this", " i don't know", "ok let's keep walking". I'll be crucified for this comment, as heartless or something, but I just felt the book was one act of irresponsiblity after another.... starting from ignoring Solicitor letters for extended periods of times, to not even packing the bare essentials for a long hike (not even Moth's medicine), to putting a tent on the beach and wondering why the water is coming in in the middle of the night, stealing from shops, scavenging scraps from other people's plates in restaurants, breaking into campsites... and so on. What did I learn about the south west coastal path? It's in South England and there are Cornish Pasties, and mostly horrible upper class people apparently.

Unless one has personally experienced the stress that they went through, and the 100 nights or so under 'canvas', it's difficult to appreciate their predicament and responses. They never claimed to be experienced wild campers but were honest as they climbed the learning curve. Having run the Cornish coast in sections, the tides can be incredibly unpredictable, especially on the long flat sandy beaches. I don't condone stealing though but my experiences of working with the homeless sometimes suggest it's the only short term alternative to poor health and starving.

Great book as is the follow on one. I haven't seen Raynor before and from reading the book I got the impression of two old people who had barely any vitality and looked raddled and worn out haha - not true having seen this and photos of them online!

@@kernowarty Probably because New York is famous and some village in Newfoundland isn't. I've see that signpost also. Lands End sits on the 50th parallel of latitude. New York is on the 40th parallel.

I may be overlooking something, given all the positive opinions of this book, but I found it somewhat irritating and very contrived. Essentially it's about a couple who suffered some life setbacks, admittedly serious ones, but instead of taking stock of their resources and formulating a plan, decided to go on a (state funded) walking holiday. Various minor difficulties were inflated out of all proportion to be then heroically overcome. They could have quit their walk any time they wanted but instead we are invited to admire their persistence in the face of adversity. Like I say, I may be missing something (empathy or compassion maybe?) but I'm not inspired by people overcoming self-inflicted and concocted hardships....and then selling a book about it.

What an old misery guts you are - these two brave people could have signed up for all sorts of benefits as well as a council house but they chose to be as self-sufficient as possible in the most wonderful way taking the very minimum from the state. Great inspiring book

These people have worked hard all there lives and have paid into the system and got screwed over by the courts. They are two very kind people that even gave their last piece of food to someone else. You muckypots are a twat.

I read the book and yes, to each his own no question. That being said, even if I didn't enjoy the book overall for the sorts of reasons you mention, for me personally as someone with a related disease to Moth's corticobasal degeneration, in my case Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, I was inspired with this fact alone that he was able to carry-on with such a hike and this gives me inspiration to be able to deal with a progressive non-curable neurodegenerative disease rather than sitting inside my home all day long and feeling sorry for myself.
