as tide goes out on Koh Lanta beach in thailand, hundreds of tiny sand bubbler crabs emerge from the sand. after resting underground for several hours the crabs surface the beach and begin to feast on the particles washed up after tides go out. their method of eating is quite odd. they grab small clusters of sand very fast and filter the particles, all the while creating a small sand bubble within seconds, rinse, wash, repeat until tide comes back in and they burrow underground and wait for the tide to go out again. (imagine this in the British documentary voice XD)
They are harvesting food. Microscopic food. Their bodies know how to film out microbes from the sand with water in their mouths and spit the remaining sand out.
They are eating. From Wikipedia: "They feed by filtering sand through their mouthparts, leaving behind balls of sand that are disintegrated by the incoming high tide."
