There is a big argument that the US and the British should never have been in Iraq in the first place, but the armed forces are not responsible for political decisions and once they are deployed they should be supported 100%

In 2002 a crack squad of SAS soldiers are to be honoured by President George Bush after they rescued a US hostage in a daring mission. The four-man team went behind enemy lines in Afghanistan to save the CIA agent from ruthless Al-Qaida fanatics. The Brits - whose SAS motto is "Who Dares Wins" - were hand-picked for the dangerous mission because US soldiers were not up to the job. Dozens of Afghan terrorists were killed in a fierce gun battle during the raid. But our boys returned with no casualties. Now they will receive a Presidential Citation from Mr Bush in Washington - an award rarely made to non-Americans. A source said: "The CIA agent had been taken hostage, chained and blindfolded. "He was about to be tortured and was virtually a dead man. The SAS were his only hope. "The American Delta Force don't have enough experience of missions like this, so they asked the Brits to go in instead. "It was just like something out of a Hollywood movie. And the mission was accomplished with no casualties." The team - who took part in similar missions in the Yugoslav conflict - took the Al-Qaida militia by surprise when they dropped from a helicopter into the then Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. They burst in through windows of a house where the hostage was being held and threw stun grenades before a fierce firefight left dozens dead. The source added: "The Taliban didn't know what had hit them because the helicopter flew in incredibly low to avoid detection. "Amid all the gunfire they managed to locate the hostage, bundle him into the helicopter and fly to safety. Everything went exactly to plan." Due to secrecy surrounding SAS operations and personnel, the awards will never be officially recorded. The men, from A Squadron, have also been put forward for recognition in Britain. Two had earlier gone behind Iraqi lines to destroy deadly Scud missiles during the Gulf War. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "We never comment on SAS issues."

I will never understand why the Iraqi's were paid millions in compensation, when it was the corruption of the police that caused the incident in the first place. As for the SAS guy's let's be honest who is going to tell them they can't get their mates? Anyone who thought they wouldn't go back for them, was kidding themselves and the last people you want to resign en masse or p**s off is a bunch of guys from the SAS, they're known for being not only highly skilled soldiers but a bit wild and crazy who will do things that even other special forces won't, and the higher up's thought that they could control those guy's when their own were in danger, they. obviously didn't know their own men very well.
@PortilloMoment

The millions were paid for a simple reason. The suits knew they'd put themselves on the wrong side of the argument. Any politician in that situation wants to close down discussion to avoid embarrassment or awkward questions. Just as they care nothing for the lives of the people they send into danger, they think nothing of paying public money to limit discussion and close down conversations that may disadvantage them or their party.

Hi Daniel, try Operation Barras, a mission in Sierra Leone by the SAS, to rescue soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment captured while on UN peace-keeping duty. Or maybe Operation Glacier 2, during which 4 Royal Marines flew into action strapped to the outside of 2 Apache attack helicopters, one of the other Apaches flying cover for them was flown by Captain Charlotte Maddison, known to British ground troops as "The Angel of Death". She was renown for not returning from a fire mission until she'd expended every bullet rocket and missile she had aboard. The channel "Liveth For Evermore" has photographs and video of the actual event.

As for the protesters: perhaps it helps to try to shift your perspective. Part of what the military purports to defend and protect is our rights, prominently among those the right to protest. As long as these people protest you know you are succeeding in protecting that right of theirs. When they begin to get silenced by the government is when failure and defeat is imminent. It’s pretty much a gauge of success one way or another. It is disheartening at face value but try to gain strength from it instead as a celebration of the rights and way of life you are defending. They may not realise it or even deny it, but you know it to be true for their very action is proof of it.

To be honest I couldn’t tell you if the story is true but it would be very rare for a British soldier to go against it’s orders I get the impression and only because of American films and hearing their code I’m talking about the American marines that they never leave anyone behind even their fallen comrades and it does sound a very American thing that your special forces would offer your help if that is the correct term to use but if one thing that would push the sas to do this this would probably have put their back up not in a negative way but it would have added to their persistence in their own mind to not only rescue their comrades and show they are still the best to the rest of the world but internally it would be for the same reason as our American brothers to go back and have no problem putting their lives at risk for their pals 👍👍👍

This video's ok but misses quite a few important points when they first surrounded the prison two officers went in to negotiate but the Iraqi unsugents took them hostage as well. the troops outside were forced to withdraw by rioters to avoid civilian casualties. While they were away the Iraqis stuffed the SAS prisoners into the trunk of a police car and moved them to a safe house. So the SAS led and coordinated two simultaneous rescues most of them hit the safe house and rescued their friends but a small group backed up by the regular army with tanks and IFV's stormed the prison to get the two negotiators out. It's beyond impressive two coordinated missions in a hotile environment planned and executed in mear hours involving hundreds of troops executed brilliantly by all involved. It shows just what our troops are capable of when not obstructed by their own government.

But there are different levels and This is top tier frustration to me, as like you i get the geopolitics but saving countrymen in need, civilian or military should be the utmost priority, period. No discussion. And i like to counter that geopolitical argument, : the shit has already hit the fan, the powder was already lit, in this case they're only worried about short term public perception, and that is where they missed the ball completely, only considering the perception of the Iraquees, but forgot the people back home. And who do think your opponens fear and especially respect most? Militaries that leave men behind or that move heaven and earth to get them back? How about the motivation and will to fight of our own men and women? We fight knowing( assuming) we ll always come home, either the high road or the low road. These kind of orders are forced upon us by politicians or by the f-ing Peter Principle that is present in many armies around the globe. The sad truth is, no matter what happens you will always get some that will complain and protest just for the sake of protesting, just to get their 5 mins of fame.

@@jay54733 As someone who protested the invasion of iraq at the time, you're dead wrong. It's the difference between trying to talk your mate out of starting a fight and having his back when the fight turns against him.

I've been watching your content for a long time and love that you have got into these military stories, I highly recommend Ben McIntyre's amazing documentaries which deep dive into tales from ww2, his series SAS: Rogue Heroes and the story of Blair Paddy Mayne, one of the most remarkable and terrifying soldiers in history and THE primary influence on SAS tactics. It's also been dramatised.

100% - They're soldiers, not mercenaries - ask a soldier to leave their comrade behind and command has lost authorisation, he says from his armchair.. Legit believe pensions should be paid to anyone asked to leave a soldier behind, asking them to serve going forward is a 50/50 - when they know they can just as easily be left to the enemy on the next sortie. Edit: Ultimately, they pretty much always do get their people back - I have this idea that they just don't have some big 'no man left behind' slogan because they don't want it to be so established that the enemy knows they will always come. If they know they're coming then the people are moved, killed sooner and the enemy prepared for a rescue. It's still, seemingly, always a surprise to the enemy. Well, sh!t, that's a good thing, in a messed up kinda way.

That photo is totally misleading as that is from the protest about sending British Forces to Iraq on made up Intel and the people in The UK were squarely behind the assault on the Police Station and The S.A.S. As once that decision as been made n troops are in country and committed to battle The people will be behind its forces, at this time The UK had a lot of Home grown terrorists who supported the insurgency as you'll know about with the attacks in London and Manchester showed but the average British person was 100% behind its forces all the way, Job well done and respect for going against they're own Government. I think when this became News it caused more trouble with the Armed Forces and the Politicians who put them in harms way...

I only served in the British reserves the TA, but no way would I leave someone in need behind if I could at least try to get them out. I was sent my veterans pin on request but feel that I don’t deserve to wear it as I never saw action and only served 3 years I feel a fraud compared to these sorts of men and women

Many little AV details in this video are misleading (for example, when they mention the British PM they show a picture of BoJo, who was a Tory and didn't become PM until 2019.)

The British Government should never have compensated Iraq with a penny for that police station. The soldiers were there to restore peace to the place.
