Happy Halloween! (I know it's early but it's all in the SPIRIT of things)
anyway, this clip is from "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night". It may not be the scariest moment in kids movie history, but it still is quite disturbing (reference to Courage the Cowardly Dog episode "The Great Fusilli"). Sweet Dreams...

I think she was cursed by the emperor but it does not show it at the beginning and instead of running away Pinocchio saw her beauty and there must had been horror in her eyes as she looked at him turning into a puppet as if she was to say it’s a trap get out go. He should have left when the crowd did and get help. But Pinocchio knew he had power within him over evil and wanted to help her. In the end his victory against the emperor from his sacrifice for his father also freed her and they became friends how cute just goes show a kind heart always wins that’s what the fairy godmother said.

Its very interesting how everyone says Twinkles song is cute or adorable but its actually quite sad. The underlying darkness of “do what you want to/do what makes you happy” does not always mean you will be happy. Actions have consequences. Not to mention her talking about no family or friends to turn to. A sad song in the guise of pleasure, a common theme in Pinnochio.

I'm just seeing this for the first time a few years ago, but to be fair I can imagine this actually being more disturbing to an adult than a child. To a child it's just scary, the imagery is unpleasant and the mood shifts are more rapid when you're not listening to the lyrics of the song or understanding them. When you're an adult you pick up on more of the nuances of the ominous nature of the entire scene. We are also more aware of child predators and it's inescapable to equate this villain with one

Okay, I have to confess, this was really disturbing for a kids movie. Sure, the animation is a bit sub-par and the acting is kind of wooden. But I have always found puppets sort of disturbing, and the way they're used here is very much like in a horror movie. But what really makes this dark is the associations. An evil old man who lures a child into his wagon and forces him to do things... While this may have been creepy back in the day, today it's downright horrifying.
@xFlareLeon

That's exactly what I was thinking when he started talking about making him a "star"... jesus christ. And what's worse, if Twinkle's song is a real story then it's likely she ran off so she could do what she wanted and ended up seduced and turned into a puppet...
@astrangerhere

The association as you say is definitely what makes this horrifying. Puppetino (an older man) is basically torturing Pinnochio (a child) as he screams and pleads for help while Puppetino laughs maniacally at him, only to have him cry a single tear as he is completely made a slave to him. It's awesome that the Good Fairy saves him, but still.....

If you have asperger's like I do, this is a full blown sensory overload. I'm a lot more sensitive to everything than others. This scene plays out like a scene from a nightmare. When I saw this as a kid it was in class and I had an autistic reaction where I started covering my ears and started letting out high pitched squeaks and shrieks. The other kids laughed at me (hardly anyone knew about autism or asperger's in the 90s) and I had to be sent home. So don't judge people as being "weak" for being scared of this scene. Thank you so much for uploading this. I watched this when I was maybe 4 or 5, and I think about it from time to time. Pretty sure it traumatized me, because it made me want to cry watching it just now. Seeing it at the age of 24 and knowing that it actually is fucked up and not just my under developed brain freaking out over nothing. I feel a sense of closure lol

Scary, huh? After I watched Courage the Cowardly Dog and the Fusilli episode, I think I'm kind of puppet-proof. But its still pretty creepy as for an old cartoon standard, I agree.

I think this is scarier than that. That scene it was over and done with quite quickly, this one Puppetino drags it out whilst Pinocchio begs. But Fusilli scene was quite scary, yes.

This is reminiscent of Lampwick’s donkey transformation in the 1940 Disney film. Even down to the frantic pleading right before losing the ability to speak. Also, Pinocchio gets tricked by Puppetino like he was by the Coachman, then is nearly enslaved forever.

From what I read that was the center of a controversy surrounding this scene. If you close your eyes and listen without visuals it sounds exactly like what you just mentioned. I also wish I didn't know this but frankly, it captures so much of what it actually feels like to be molested. You usually don't understand what's happening to you you just know you don't like it and you wish it would stop

Definitely one of the scarier movie scenes from childhood and as far as cartoons, the scariest. Are you afraid of the dark had some contending content for sure.

Ironically, I was sort of expecting recent Disney musicals like Tangled and Frozen to have this kind of imagery prior to their theatrical premieres. I just don't understand it. Why can't Disney and other animation studios keeping making more cool creepy-ass scenes for their productions these days, whether they be hand-drawn, stop-motion, or CG?

I'd say they've been anxious about going too dark since the results haven't been very profitable for them in recent past. Of course, movies like Pinnochio, Snow White and Bambi made it and today they are immortal classics. But Disney also has financial flops like The Black Cauldron and The Hunchback of Notre Dame to consider, who while not despicably bad movies, didn't find any big audience. Also, I wouldn't undersell modern Disney too much; Pixar occasionally delivers distinctly dark moments, and while things hardly ever go into Pinnochio territory for the big D anymore, they do deliver more adult storylines.

I never understood why so many KID movies back then had to have scenes that were so traumatizing. This one, Old Yeller, Neverending Story, I mean what did we do to deserve getting so much creepiness shoved through our eyes?! 🤣 But other than this scene, the movie is definitely a childhood classic of mine and I love seeing Puppetino get his at the end!

So I didn't really find it creepy but knew there was a lesson there - thankfully as a five year old the film spelled it out cause I wouldn't have understood it, despite knowing there was something to be understood.
