The Scariest Moment Of Filming Smokey and the Bandit

Burt Reynolds recalls the most terrifying scene during the filming of Smokey and the Bandit. He remembers the scene where Sally Fields' stunt double was behind the wheel and he was in the passenger seat. They were supposed to jump over a wall, land in the Little League baseball field, go AROUND the game, and then through another wall.
However, that's not exactly what happened. Instead of going around the game, the stunt woman panicked and they ended up flying over all the kids in the field. Luckily, they all ducked and nobody was hurt. But as you can imagine it could've ended quite differently and put an end to a lot of peoples careers...

About 3 years ago,I saw Burt , at a Best Buy store in Jupiter Florida. He was so polite and nice. I remember that he was looking for a 70" LED television. I felt so bad for him. It was obvious ,that he was in a lot of pain. May God rest his soul. We have lost a wonderful actor,and a great man.

@@moonbeamskies3346 of course I did . I politely said good afternoon Mr. Reynolds , and he simply replied good afternoon to you. Very polite man. Actually much nicer , than I thought he was. It's his heart troubles that really did him in...your strength is just zapped from it and everything else falls to pieces, little by little. And without strength in your body, the arthritis gets much worse due to immobility. A very tough ending for him. "But no one had more fun than he did" 😉

Burt is just so classy. He never says a negative thing about anyone, and seems to always be able to put himslef in others' shoes. He doesn't trash talk the stunt woman, but instead compliments her on what she did well, and admits she wasn't experienced enough. He doesn't suggest anyone overreacted, and unlike some commenters, he gets how very tragic that all could have been. A true gentleman, and a good human being. R.I.P, Burt.

He's better than me. I'll say it. "stunt woman".... there is one word there that is the problem. Today there are probably far better stunt women drivers. I guess they had to start somewhere to get to where there are now.

@Bonzi_Buddy
@Bonzi_Buddy 5 лет назад
At the very beginning he had nice words to offer her but basically saying "handling cars is a different thing". He was very kind in saying she wasn't woefully inadequate. I'm just saying back then stuntwomen drivers were far and few between and probably not very good because of that. Today there are much better skilled stuntwomen drivers. It is hilarious as they had petite men doing stunts for women back in the day because they were largely incompetent. People are just too kind to state the truth... like women cops are nearly fuckin useless too.

@@Bonzi_Buddy Its so easy to interpret words, in of all places..the comment sections...incorrectly.😅 And it seems many take things a little too personally. Thanks for taking the time to respond, I see what your saying, and agree with a lot of it. Part of that is because Burt realized one thing--moviegoers (average folks) help create the profits a movie makes--you don't have to "suck up" to them, but you damn sure better appreciate them. Having a successful picture at the box office helps the "stuffed shirts" (movie production funders/backers) be more willing to fund the next project. Burt's popularity was due to his genuine appreciation FOR those ticket buyers; the "big shots" weren't stupid--Burt's movies were properly "greased," ($$) knowing that a Burt Reynolds flick was gonna BE a money maker, thus, a good "investment." lol

We rode our bikes all over the place. 5 or 6 miles in 110 heat, no problem. If you wanted to go somewhere thats what you had to do before you was old enough to own a car and get your drivers license. I had to work for my car, 1 year insurance and then i could get my license. We had alot more freedom back then but we earned it. 3 channels on tv, no video games or computers, 4 party line phone, so go outside and do something, and if you want something then get a job. Burt Reynolds doesn't mention that the car actually crashed into a concrete dugout (destroying the car) that had a couple of my schoolmates in it. They scrambled to get out of the way. One of them ended up with a broken leg. A few days later they built a breakaway replica of the dugout and ran another Trans Am through it to continue the chase scene.

i love how he had his eyebrows done among many other things, but it keeps him looking young. looks like some form of facial abrasion techniques on his face to smooth it out.. very expensive procedure. Really loved this guy. Watch White Lightning , its free on youtube.

I'm from Jupiter and ran across Burt many times. My dad was friendly with him back in the 70's and early 80's and did work on Smokey II, which was filmed in the area. Pretty much everyone liked Burt. He came up from humble beginnings in Riviera Beach, FL when it was a small fishing village and he lived in a small wood A frame home just south of Silver Beach Road and worked at the gas station at the end of his street on the corner US-1. His dad was a pretty hard core cop having busted my father in law as a teenager mostly for sneaking into the drive in theater that was there in the day. Anyway I was leafing through some pics of the production of part II and saw some celebrities that went on to star in The Cannonball Run that would have started pre-production right after that one.

Burt discussed that particular scene. There was a lady stunt double in for Sally. They were supposed to come over the ledge and drive around the side of the field and then exit through the fence. The lady gunned it and that's one scene that went to hell just that fast. Burt recalled that that was the only terrified him to his core out of his time as a movie star. You can catch the interview Here on RU-vid
