Sometimes I'm actually better at lying than I am at telling the truth when someone suspects I'm lying. When I lie, I'm just thinking about the lie. But when I'm telling the truth, I focus on making it look like I'm not lying, in which case I get nervous, and everyone assumes I am lying.
I have the same problem. It's because of that reason. everyone thinks i'm a really bad liar that lies about everything. When in fact! I try to be truthful.
I have a similar problem but instead of getting nervous i smile or laugh like liar when telling the truth and that raises suspicions and makes people not believe me, which in turn forces me to use half lies and then people blame me for lying. weird.
Ever go into a store and then they don't have what you wanted so then you buy something anyway because it's frickin impossible to leave without looking like you definitely stole something...

+LemonWedge123 In the casual sense you probably are. You seem to enjoy lying. The difference with pathological lying has just been described here. You don't fully believe what you are saying, and as I recall it isn't time constrained. The fact that you even suggested that you are a pathological liar means that you merely enjoy tricking people, but not in a psychologically anomalous way (at least, not the one associated with the disorder).
LemonWedge123 There's a difference between having memories that can't be trusted and pathological lying. It can happen for a number of reasons. Misremembering something so that it competes with the real memory, generalized self-doubt, and others. A pathological liar would struggle to conceive that a memory could be wrong. The mind itself (not necessarily personality disposition in itself) assumes that the most convenient truth is true. The possibility that a previous memory is wrong is very inconvenient.
Hank you probs know this by now, but training in detecting bodily cues that might suggest lying doesn't work because a lot of these "cues" have only been shown to have a small effect in detecting a lie! Indeed, training to detect these cues just makes people more confident in their ability to detect a lie, and thus biased towards thinking people are being deceptive. My advice to anyone - don't try and be a good "lie spotter" because you can't be one. You may learn the behavioural indictors of a lie of a particular individual, but there is no well documented universal behaviour that suggests when one is lying. Sincerely a psychology student with too much time on her hands.
I imagine if you watch a lot of people lie and wait to be told the answer after you try to guess it you'll build a neural network in your brain to detect lies. I don't know, I never did it, but how is this different than just mastering a skill? Sure, it's tough, but it sounds to me pretty possible.
@@MaoDev well, firstly, a lot of the "cues" are things that people with disabilities do regardless of truth or lies so "lie detection" can be used to violate bodily autonomy AKA lie detection makes the error of confusing the map for the territory. secondly, it's culturally chauvinist & assumes a shared culture. in japan for example, laugher is something people do when scared, and in fact dark humor can be seen as a combination of that form of laughter with comedy. TLDR: there are several different style guides for nonverbal communication & you have to learn which ones an individual uses. basically you have to learn both the idiolects & sociolects a person has.
@@eve36368 ye, I read some articles about that after I posted that comment. IIRC people get the cues, but even then they only have 54 percent chance of guessing whether somebody's lying. No different than flipping a coin. Well, then again, if it was possible to train yourself to detect lies then we wouldn't need investigations to incriminate people.
lol, I do a lot of those things even when I'm not lying. For people with social anxiety this might be enlightening. Others find you to not only be awkward, but dishonest as well. I'll keep it in mind.
Exactly. Grab a huge thumbs up from me. I realised this many years ago. Almost no one pays enough attention to body language though, so you can "relax"... But yeah, you should keep that in mind.
Knowing the tells of lying makes my social anxiety worse sometimes because I'm already nervous and then I start worrying that the person will think I'm lying and then I get more nervous
i tell terrible lies on purpose occasionally to keep the facade that I'm a terrible liar, so my real lies are less detectable and more believable. I'm a terrible person.
Can I just say, the head nod to the TV show Lie to Me (may it rest in peace) during your show's theme song was fantastic. I actually catch myself making a lot of those body tells when I lie now. It's interesting.

No. I am saying is that to create a believable lie, you must try to add the truth as much as possible, and shape the truth into a lie. Slightly bending it, not creating a new shape that will be recognized for it's difference with reality.
When I try to tell the truth, people mostly thinks that I'm lying. And vise versa... Sooo. Does that mean I'm a good liar. or a bad liar... or a bad truth teller.... I don't know anymore
This area of science seems to be unreliable, unless someone can point out some research that proves it's credibility I find this sort of stuff hard to believe. It's interesting, sure enough and seeing these cues are fascinating, but i'm sure there's a reason that this kind of science isn't used in court and such. When i say "to be totally honest", it's because i'm preparing someone who may not like what i'm about to say, announcing that i'm about to make an honest statement sort of throws away the question of whether or not i agree with it... If i say "believe me" it's usually because i'm about to say something i don't expect the other person to believe, it doesn't tell if i'm lying or not. So we have different ways of using certain expressions, and what about people from different cultures? Relying on this sort of stuff leads to way too many false positives for it to be viable as an actual way to detect deception.
+Dan Maginnis That's why they're trained to look for clusters of cues. Just doing one or two of the things may not mean anything, but when you group cues together, it's a pretty good indicator. But yes, it is less reliable than would be needed to use in court. Though there are cases when this is still helpful. For example, in an interview, if a potential employee seems to be lying about something based on a group of cues, this is enough to confront them about their potential deception, or at least check into what they're saying. If the president says something with a cluster of cues, the least you can do is start a conspiracy theory and a couple doomsday cults.
+Dan Maginnis Pretty much what +Zachery Marcum said. It gives people a basis to look into something suspicious, not to convict them. It has a very limited correlation.

I have witnessed a large number of people or even the same people continuously succumb to the subconscious eye movements when they were lying and when they are telling the truth. A key point though was made by Zachery when he said that people are trained (and you can also learn) to recognize clusters of cues.
One thing that we have to remember as well is that when we are talking about "admissible in court," we are talking about extremely high standards. They are appropriately high, of course, but that doesn't mean that the science behind it is worthless. It just means "approach with caution." An 80% success rate is still an 80% success rate (for example), just don't put a man to death on the 20% percent chance of failure.

Very few people would be stupid enough to think someone is lying because they say "to be honest". Especially since most people say either normal things or somewhat unpleasant things after they start with "to be honest". Most times a sentence starts with "to be honest" there will be some sort of negative feedback, like "to be honest... I didn't really like that movie" or whatever.
Yeah the Koko the Gorilla example... that might be that the researcher was being extremely selective. Koko didn't seem to understand language at all, just that they should make signs to make her handler happy, and "blame the kitten" is a classic example where when challenged it just listed random signs that it knew. It was a bit of a scandal, it was supposed to be serious research into communication in animals and she was making huge inferences. Like when Koko is asked to answer questions and gives completely nonsensical "answers" her handler would make leaps in logic that Koko was deliberately saying the wrong answer to be funny then would keep pressing Koko to give more and more responses till there was one that could be inferred as an intelligent response. Here's the thing: gorillas just can't communicate like that. It was a more complicated example of Hans the Horse only instead of waiting for a tap out of the right answers it was picking random works and the handler would make inferences such as "evidence" of lying... it was actually evidence of the Gorilla following Pavlovian conditioning. Now Koko was more intelligent than most animals, but it wasn't communicating in a meaningful way certainly not to the level of deception. It was little more than a parrot who knew many more phrases (as sign language) and saying as many without understanding.
orcodrilo No, not a mistake... an inherent inability to understand what they were even trying to do. The thing was Koko was effectively (though probably not intentionally) conditioned to list random words she knew without any understanding of either the what the words she was saying meant or even what was being said to her. It wasn't deception, it wasn't even an answer, there wasn't even consideration of the question. For example: she tore off the sink, her handler questioned her about the sink in a way where a one word response will do, so not "what happened in your room" but "WHO tore off the sink?" and Koko was conditioned that when her handler started talking to her she had to sign "words" and she just happened to say a noun for a living creature. Now the gorilla wasn't actually stupid enough to think they could blame a sink-destroying incident on a tiny kitten, it just ran off random words. This is simultaneously treating KoKo as smarter and stupider than she actually was, she was smart enough to understand a kitten is too weak to rip out a sink... but not smart enough to understand questioning. See the whole study was undermined by selective anecdotes. The "researcher" did not include examples where KoKo's answers were so random they couldn't possibly be construed as either ironic humour, sarcasm or attempts at deception. Example: "well Coco what do you want for breakfast" "Tickle!" "Oh not Now Coco, what do you want to eat" "sky... walk... tire... head... orange..." "oh you want an orange for breakfast, here you go" Then Koko took the orange slowly, looking around then after a while ate it anyway. A telling example was KoKo met another Gorilla who had also been taught the same signs. They both signed to each other "tickle"... they did this for about 5 minutes signing it more and more then gave up. They didn't really know what the "tickle" sign meant, they only knew if they wanted to be tickled by the human handlers. It was simple pavlovian conditioning. Gorillas are able to "communicate" by deed such as tickling one and they will get tickled in return, but by direct communication of intent... that part of their brain just does not exist. They cannot comprehend abstract concepts such as a sign or phrase for "tickling" only pavlovian "if I do this then I'll be tickled". Koko never asked question. Made demands but never initiated exchange of information.
Treblaine interesting... why isn't coco able to understand sign language then? is it missing parts of the brain that we naturally have that would allow it to really understand.
chictownguy Yeah, it seems that part of the brain is simply not there. They can distinguish signs, but they cannot with any consistency apply the abstract meaning to them that even a toddler can do.

I only just realized I am one after watching this video. I find myself lying everyday about almost everything, even insignificant things like what clothes I'm wearing, what time I woke up, whether I completed an assignment or not, etc. I was joking when I wrote that second comment, but I think you already know that. If you have the balls to tell me that I'm not one, let me tell you this: My life sucks. No one trusts me anymore, not even my closest family and friends. People think I'm anorexic because I keep lying whether I had food or not. My grades in school are dropping because I lie about turning assignments in. And I'm perfectly fine with telling the truth in a RU-vid comment, because RU-vid comments are insignificant and dumb. I thought that my comment wouldn't attract attention; that people would understand and not question. Obviously, I was wrong.

I usually differ between lies and non-truths, were a lie is when you know your telling a lie, and non-truth when you say something you believe is right, but isn't. Like, if somebody were told that 2+2 = 5 their whole life they wouldn't be lying if they said it, but it would be a non-truth.
I'm an atheist, if I ever get a trial in court, I'll just say something and say, "If I'm laying, may God strike me down right now!". I'll be invincible.
I actually did that once, but it was for a prank. When I was playing with my art teacher's dog, I thought it would be good to trick my clean freak friend when I get home-he's my neighbor. So I washed my hand (see how nice I am) and went him. I told him to give me his hand. When he refused I said, "I swear to God that I'm not fooling you, and if I am, I would go to hell. It's for something." with a dead serious look on my face. So he gave me his hand and I squeezed it HARD. Then I told him I touched a dog and didn't wash my hand before this XD he got so mad and was almost about beat me up. But he ran to the bathroom first and washed his hand for like 5 times, even tho I kept telling him it was a joke and I washed my hand. XD

What I do is find a lie that I KNOW and feel I can pull off without feeling nervous or, if I'm restrained to one lie to pretend someone else did it or that its the truth. I'm a fairly good liar.
MrHarrystank I'm a shy person in real life. I don't have the guts to pretend someone else did it half the time- I think I was speaking about certain circumstances but I forget what. :P

I've always been able to tell if people I'm close to are lying to me through the way they speak or by watching their face. I'm glad you referenced Paul Ekman's work. It's the reason I got more into psychology and in general trying to understand people more.

This made me feel a lot better tbh I work in customer service and have been stressing about how often I tell small inconsequential lies or exaggerations in a desperate attempt to make small talk with my customers but evidently lies in conversations with strangers are totally normal and probably necessary

It's actually really hard for me to lie.. Even when I should, I really don't. And when someone asks me something and they get that look at me trying to judge if I'm lying or not it makes me so nervous I come off as a liar even though I'm not.. And I can never tell when ppl lie to me, I'm too gullible, and maybe I secretly don't want to know someone is lying to me. Ignorance is bliss, but I really wish ppl would stop thinking I'm as shitty as the rest of you. I'm autistic and social q's are not my strength.

I'm a pretty good liar, but I choose not to lie. I just prefer being honest. Because I don't want someone lying to me -as I can be quite gullible :| . I'm pretty good at acting and tricking people and myself. I can be quite manipulative, but it has never been with malicious intention -all just for fun. I usually only tell little "harmless" lies, nothing too serious.
There is a great book I recommend by Ian Leslie *Born Liars*. It helped me understand why I was compulsively lying to everyone, not with white lies or necessary lies... Just long long stories that never actually happened or just lies about my life in general. I've been doing this for years and I wish I could stop this game, because I realized I was deceiving mostly myself.

So glad I finally found this again, I had to try and remember how to search in on RU-vid, hadn't seen it in years and had to know the difference in brain chemistry between pathological liars and honest people. Thanks again guys for making this. My unsuccessful searches in attempts to find this video were things like "brains of liars and honest people" and "brain on lying" lol. I've just realized my wife had been lying to me for years about who she was sleeping with, and wow, does honesty pay off, liars get very angry about what they're lying about, and forget the previous stories and details they've told. Also, the main sign of a lie that I've found is, someone keeping everything private from you even in your most private relationship, Marriage. Well the truth does set you free, and now I don't have to get upset wondering what she was doing anymore, because now I know it was all lies, cheating, and adultery.
Worst lie ever: My friend Evan and I were running down the hallway. When we get caught, he pauses for about ten seconds and then says "Um....... Oh, yeah, sorry, sometimes I can't tell when I'm running..." xD

Actually the saying "to be totally honest" and "believe me" isn't always correct. I tend to use it when admitting to something, or when I'm about to be blunt with someone. As well with contractions, I think with speak that does seem more plausible, but not with text. There's a fair number of people whom will keep their grammar in line when typing out something. Even when it's just a quick message to someone they know couldn't care less if it's right or not. XD Though I suppose it be a better indicator if you knew the person didn't normally do that. In which this way of phrasing might be used as an indicator. Personally I find determining whether someone is lying is to take notice on if actions and words are not matching up, if they're being vague or get nervous upon being asked to elaborate and/or take to much time thinking about what they are going to say before saying it (note: some people take time due to anxiety/an unreasonable lack of confidence with how they sound, and not due to the integrity of what they are saying), and of course when shit just plain doesn't make sense. Though this helps out more so (especially the latter) with people whom aren't really great liars which wasn't the group the video was really focussing on. So this paragraph is rather just pointless rambling. Fuck. Apologies to anyone whom wasted their time reading through that.
Every person has his/her own filler words. For example, I tend to overuse words like "probably", "maybe" and "I think" in a discussion even when I'm rather confident in what I'm saying, because I don't want to give a false impression that I'm claiming to be an expert on the subject.
My dog is a big liar One time she peed on my bed just before I took her for a walk. At first she thought I somehow knew it but when she realised I had no idea about the incident, she even faked peeing when I took her for a walk.
xD My dog pretends she's full when I give her any kind of dogfood (with some exceptions) and once I start eating something she's like "Hey! Over here! I'm hungry as foop! Give me something!!". She sometimes barks when she does that and I don't give her anything xD
I think lying to strangers just streamlines conversations. They don't know you or the context of your life, so you give them a version that is easily understood by taking advantage of common clichés and themes
With the point that lying evolved to a superior mind you forgot the counter: truthing .... Silly as it may sound, being factual correct got people beyond religion and into space.

I find this to be a very interesting topic. Lying is something that is crucial to emotional development. It allows people (and gorillas ) to feel safe when facing the unknown, it helps others to feel more comfortable/ "save face" (like a person choosing not to say "you looks fat" in that outfit) when that person is not acting or being perceived as being imperfect and it allows a person (as you were saying ) to seek extra attention (as in the case with infants) when there is a perceived need for extra emotional attention. All of these things deal with a need for emotional safety and yes, people do develop defense mechanisms surrounding a need for emotional, physical, social and job security and that need for extra attention. However, perception plays a large part in this. I noticed that you touched on this regarding choosing to focus on one piece of information over another. But there is going to be a reason that the other piece of information is not focused and that is where perception comes in. How much we focus on certain bits of information, whether we have the ability or the desire to synthesize it or avoid it and what defense mechanisms we choose to avoid the information and emotion are all important. There is always a why behind the what.
actually they may have . quite a few studies are showing not just lying but the entire range of sociopathic traits/behaviors can be found out of proportion in the boardrooms of most international corperates, and banking industries. But then maybe I should go read all the previous comments!

I don't think that you should keep talking about pathological liars as if we weren't here. It's kinda demeaning when you act as if we're 'unnatural' or 'wrong' or 'problematic'. There are real people watching you who know that they have this condition. When you refer to us as less than normal, it feels like you're trying to shame us. And trust me, I've gotten enough of that from everyone else. So when I hear that bias from an informative channel...? Anyways, I at least hope that you add an annotation or something. Would you blame someone for a faulty machine that they didn't choose? Think about it this way: Would you tell depressed people that they need to just lighten up? Would you tell obsessive-compulsive people to just leave stuff alone? Would you tell someone with a damaged Broca's area to speak up, or someone in a wheelchair to not clog the hallway? No. Of course you wouldn't. So just stop making generalizations, stop spreading hate, and please, for the millionth f**king time I've said this to someone, would you stop and take some steps in someone else's shoes before you criticize them?
+TheWolfboy180 Pathological lying in the sense that you lie, even when it totally screws and destroys other people. E,g. "No, I did not cheat on you babe.". In that case, yes. You should be shamed. Screwing other people over when they did nothing to you, especially in that context, hurtful intentions intended.

THEY ALMOST ALWAYS HAVE NO INCENTIVE TO DO SO, NOR DO THEY HAVE ANY CONTROL OVER IT. Now that we've gotten that out of the way ... Two things to note here. One - yes, pathological lying is a mental illness. It is an uncontrollable function of some brains. Lying, as Hank stated, might (actually, almost certainly) be wired into humans' brains. We just happen to have that at a higher degree than others. Second thing: it's not because we are trying to be hurtful. It's not because we lie only when it's convenient. No, that's just assholes. Trust me, there are a lot more lying assholes than pathological liars, so it's easy to think that everyone who lies in that manner is an asshole. But we are NOT, and I'm F**KING TIRED of people telling me what I am. So shut up.

I disagree that all people lie. I think people who are raised without close siblings of the same age don’t get the chance to lie without getting caught. Because you’re the only one there. I’ve never had any reason to lie my dad always told me lying would make things worse. And if you do something wrongI’ve always been someone that just faces the consequences. I don’t get that stressed out about it. And I’m not insecure to lie about my life or idiotic things like that.
the best way to lie, is to tell a semi-lie. that way your brain need less power. and when you turn your truth into something that could be true but did not happen, people are more likely to believe you. do things like swapping one embarasing thing for another. if you did something bad, you change it in something a bit less bad. people will believe it faster
I like quite often and making half, generic, lies definitely helps. They're much harder to prove wrong and it often leaves you the best possible backup plan: Faking stupid.
Lol.... Im just 13 and i am really good at lying. I've done many things without knowledge... I used to cover my lies with simple lies that no one would be angry for... So everyone thinks im a bad liar. I wonder anyone does stuff like that... And one more thing, if you understood why i write this, please "reply".
If you want people to believe a lie, make them think over time you are a bad liar. You could lie badly about stupid simple stuff on purpose that have little to no consequence. Or just always tell people you suck so bad at lying whenever it's brought up. That way when you do lie somewhat convincingly they are much more likely to believe you... because after all, you are a bad liar and they'd know if you were lying.
This video is a huge oversimplification of the truth. People can't lie unintentionally, it's impossible, because a lie is by definition intentional. So your sources are either lieing (ironically) or oversimplifying the truth and calling what is actually a kind of honesty a lie.
