The Scope of the Climate Crisis - [ECO]NOMICS Part 1

Climate change is already here, and we are on a path towards catastrophic global warming. Governments have failed to curb carbon emissions, and fossil fuel production continues to increase. This is not merely a political failure; it is also a failure of economic analysis.
In this first lecture, Professor Juliet Schor (‪@bostoncollege‬) reviews the way economists have approached the problem of climate change. Conventional economists have misunderstood the problem and misdirected their attentions, producing policy recommendations that are not up to the challenge. Many economists have focused on technological innovation, believing it sufficient. Others have misdiagnosed it as a failure of government policy coordination, concluding it is an insurmountable political problem rather than an economic one. They overlook that climate destabilization has structurally inequitable causes and impacts. Economists have tended to analyze it as a market failure and their recommendations over-rely on market mechanisms of dubious effectiveness to correct it. Still others have taken out inadequate cost-benefit analysis toolkits to construct overly optimistic estimates of the impact of climate disruption on the economy. Economists have been central to the failure to respond to the crisis, and their approach has undermined action.

I want to believed that climate change is everybody business. Whatever you from, however you're, this is our fight. We need to cooperate with the UN 13 development goals. I happened to come from West Africa, Monrovia Liberia, this doesn't mean I can't participate in this fight. We need to wake up and do it together.

As a German Biologist and Pythagorean - 1969 in our German High School - we discussed The Club of Rome and the End of growth. Nobody ever listened. 1973 was the Oil Crisis - the no speed limit German Autobahn was closed on Sundays. No effect. There was plenty of CHEAP Fuel everywhere - we could afford to live very Well. We missed ALl the opportunities - when it was CHEAP to develop new technologies. We wasted trillions in Weapons and War and total destruction - with damages lasting for Decades. Now with CoVid and WAR - we race to the Abyss. Nature helps...

As an economist I agree with all the points made except for the almost complete dismissal of a carbon tax. While a carbon tax alone would not be sufficient, it would accelerate policies and government actions to reduce carbon emissions.

The only proven way we’ve been able to reduce the use fossil fuel plants (coal, natural gas) is through hydroelectric energy and nuclear energy. Since hydroelectric is so disruptive of the ecosystem, I think nuclear is the only way. The grid is not designed for decentralized energy generation. We do not have the transmission infrastructure for it. People who say solar and wind are less expensive don’t factor in the need for building entirely new infrastructure, much more the grid-sized energy storage technology needed. They also ignore Germany, which decommissioned its nuclear plants and became even more dependent on Russian gas. Fossil fuels need to be replaced with nuclear, roads need to be replaced with rail, suburban sprawl needs to be replaced with denser, transit-oriented zoning, and people need to consume less meat. The politics and the will are the only things standing in the way.
@carolynbrzezinski5779

Solar can be very local -everyone's rooftop! Of course, not everyone has their own rooftop - and, most cannot afford the cost of solar with battery storage for when the sun isn't shining. Even though the prices of solar panels have come down considerably, the batteries are expensive. Changes are coming and if we don't use this time to prepare, the end of humanity will be harsh indeed.

You’re assuming a substitution imperative. We can’t afford energy, and have to reduce consumption. The global south already meets a reasonable ceiling per capita. It is Americans that need to reduce their carbon consumption by 90%, and Europeans by 70%.

You've been extremely selective in your comments and parts are *highly misleading.* 1) Your right that the grids were not designed for decentralised generation but so far that's proven to be mostly irrelevant. What's more important is how that power is being generated. Traditional mechanically driven generators produce a very clean sine wave output. Power generated using transistors like it is in inverters *DO NOT* produce a clean sine wave output. *I am an engineer who works in control systems and automation and know this for a fact.* In America is been cheaper in some places (like California) to install gas microturbines and generate power locally for things like factories and office blocks. Most microturbines use inverter systems to generate the AC power. When they first tried to put excess power to the local grids the noise from the inverters sometimes disrupted the local grids. *This required new standards for these decentralised power generators to avoid those issues* and now that's understood its not much of a problem anymore. 2) The Germans didn't become more reliant on Gas they became more reliant on their old coal fired power stations, which was way worse and maybe the stupidest decision the Germans have made since they listened to "that Austrian guy". Its one of the stupidest engineering or technical decisions ever made. If you want to see engineers go off bring that up and stand back. 3) Please don't BS people with simple claims about nuclear. There's now multiple options in nuclear: a) The existing pressure water and graphite systems from the first generation of nuclear power stations. b) The not so new Small Modular Systems, which are yet to be proven at grid level. c) The molten slat systems first proven to work in the late 60s early 70s that were never adopted. d) The molten salt systems running with a Thorium fuel cycle instead of Uranium. e) The under development fusion systems of which there's a variety and none of which are proven to work. *ALL OF THESE SYSTEMS* have pros and cons, so don't just ever say "I believe in nuclear power" without telling anyone what type you're talking about. *Its one of the things that annoys engineers a huge amount these days.*

I still do not understand how people frame a carbon tax as a market solution. It's a state solution. The government forcing private businesses and industries to pay a tax is the opposite of a market solution.

Good speaker. Good points. I always find it funny when people worship technology efficiency without talking about speed. To put it simply, if we care about Resource Availability * Efficiency Multiplier, don't we need to care about the rate of change for both values? Are we in a race to see if technology develops faster than we collapse society and some of our leaders and thinkers assume efficiency is faster because of reasons? And Nordhaus is one of the worse people to have ever walked earth. But I guess the existence of someone like him would have been inevitable so at least I am glad we are now at the other side of Nordhaus and can agree to acknowledge the real scale of the problems at hand.

We're Doomed. Same problem as in all Economic thinking - "Somebody else Do Something" and "It's their fault". Because she doesn't reference specific solutions to the climate problem her lecture is simply more of the same political rhetoric for which economists are famous. To an American, climate change should appear as a "OK. So what? Type of problem" since multiple solutions had already been invented by 1988. The actual problem is "There are very few people available who know how to make the necessary technical changes". For example: It's pretty easy to change an existing ICE to burn clean fuel which can be a mixture of hydrogen and ammonia. With a little extra effort the efficiency of this same engine can be increased by 20%. How many people know how to make this change? Maybe 1 person in 10,000? A blend of gasoline/methanol/ammonia will reduce carbon by half and burn without engine modification. But why talk about any specific improvements. Economics is a disaster subject because it's all talk, no action. New Economic Thinking is the same as Old Economic Thinking more bureaucracy but with a different face.
