Another great review from Phil. I love the Scorpions, especially the Uli Jon Roth era. I'm happy that they are releasing these again in vinyl. When I saw this I began dreaming of Deep Purple reissues of 1968-1975 albums. 🙂

Thanks for the post Phil! Dieter Dierks was the 6th member of the Scorpions. While I'd love to hear some of these new releases; and I do take your word for it Phil, in the old days I used a trick. I was called Mr. LED derogatorily by some but it worked. I'd listen to it and watch the LED. Some recordings just sucked. But even those done by Dieter Dierks were different. LSS, I'd take the Treble and turn it past zero and the bass also. And this, in and of itself would give a great recording a fuller, warmer sound. And you could see the LED just go into the RED. Now, the only thing one could do, (Unless you were going to record the whole LP) was put a high-quality tape, (I preferred Maxell) and put the needle down and watch the LED. I screwed around with some where people wondered if they were high but in general I did it to balance the sound quality and have it lifted up. And when you've got a high-quality tube amp-receiver you could really hear the difference. My only regret Phil? Somehow, I wish I found the money for a Blaupunkt? The German brand receiver which had a superior quality sound. My Sherwood, which was made in Canada was a damned good poor mans version though. I have a recording of the end of the Beatles Day in the Life where I make the tube amps whistle. No kidding. And when I got my workman's comp settlement? One of the 1st things I did was by 2 needles from Shure which was down the street from me. Man, that $200 diamond needle cleanly went over old jagged spots and played on. Amazing. Tell the kids about needles. My other one was $100. Both of which I paid 40% for. Where I live now it would all be useless though as the place is too small. Believe it or not I still have a pair of speakers which were made by a friends brother in 1975, (My pair of Bose are not hooked up) and when I play my 1st tape, (A Maxwell METAL-Only one I ever bought -90 mn edition I recorded in January 1983) which holds the greatest guitarists from that time....and put on my AKG headphones... if I am not blasting those 75' speakers? It would blow your mind. But your whole thing here on the Scorpions and UFO were fantastic bro. Fantastic. A whole new generation is seeking for great hard rock music as we did. Me in the U.S. and you in the U.K. Rock on and stay healthy. As Ringo said, "Peace and Love." Windrose....somewhere too close to the border in Texas. Jesus Christ blesses you too man. Amen.

Awesome video, Philo!! My favorite part is where you rave about China White, which I’ve been calling the sleeper classic Scorps song for decades! The guitar solo is so unorthodox and never fails to give me chills! Rudolf is obviously known as the composer and rhythm guitarist, but that solo holds its own with anyone, IMO. It’s completely unique and has an atmosphere that just sends you to some exotic place in your mind! Amazing stuff! Love your channel, man and love Scorps!! Cheers!

I'm a young Scorps fan. Heard much of their discography. Even Hey You with Rudy on vocals. Love that track. With that said, Humanity Hour 1 is my favorite Scorpions record. Been a fan before that record came out and didn't know how impactful it would be on me. We Were Born to Fly is my favorite Scorps song. Sure Hurricane, Crazy World, Media Overkill, The Zoo, Sails of Charon, etc. I was really let down a few years later when they released Sting in The Tail.

I actually got to the Scorpions in the Chicagoland area because of UFO and Michael Schenker. As far as bands? They are #1 with me. The Uli Jon Roth period into Lovedrive and through their Herman Rarebell period, Not that they are bad now. But Holy smoke man,,,,Black Out tour and 88 at Monsters of Rock and then finally for me the Crazy World Tour. Amazing. Alice Cooper called them a well oiled machine. Yeah.....with feeling! I had Bernie Torme's Crimson Album and the Moody Blues Octave in Blue Marble Vinyl. Great stuff.

Fantastic selection of albums, I've the 50th anniversary deluxe editons of Blackout, Animal Magnetism & Love At First Sting vinyl pressings from 2015, which all came with a cd version of the album which included bonus tracks, and also a live cd came with Love At First Sting, the hype stickers on these indicated analog/digitally remasterd, 180g heavyweight vinyl, direct metal mastering vinyl cutting, all black vinyl, I wonder how they sound compared with these new pressings...🤔seen them way back in 1991 in London during their Crazy World album tour, fantasic live band, good times!

I saw The Scorpions for the first time back in 1979 when they headlined Reading Festival at short notice after Thin Lizzy pulled out - I have been a fan of them ever since BUT I really never go beyond "Crazy World" now when I listen to their stuff - even that album is one I find difficult to play, "Winds of Change" really is one of those songs that I never need to hear again. I have tried the later albums, I own most of them but they are a bit like AC/DC for me now when, after a certain point in their catalogue, each album probably has two or three good tracks and that's it. The 1970's will always be the absolute best decade for me for music and all of the music from that era is timeless to my ears - but I think "Video Killed The Radio Star" in the 1980's for me and I just find that when video was added to music, something died that has never fully returned. For me, the Scorpions peaked with "Lovedrive" and there was a slow decline at that point. I was lucky enough to see Uli Jon Roth do a "Scorpions Revisited" gig in Germany back in 2015 and that early Scorpions stuff is truly timeless, and whilst I can appreciate "Blackout" was a phenomenal heavy metal album back in 1982, even that just sounds a bit dated now - albeit I still stick it on occasionally for some nostalgia.

The Whsmith branch in Bedford was a quality source of Rock albums, probably due ti Dave Lewis being the manager of the record department, Dave is known to be a Led Zeppelin writer and specialist, the sales were excellent, I remember going through them with my father picking up loads of stuff, while a WHSmith hierarchy seemed to be going bonkers seeing all the knock down vinyl and asking an assistant where the manager was, anyway Phil, great analysis of the reissues.

I agree about Tokyo Tapes being one of the greatest live albums and that's the one I would definitely get out of the twelve. I also agree with your take about "The Zoo." I thought that song was "just ok" when I first heard it, but then "Classic Rock Radio" played it to death (which didn't take long) like it does with a lot of songs. Great review of all twelve along with the CD's.

Thank you for watching. So it’s not just me with a thing about The Zoo! I think that’s what did it for me. It was played everywhere and it made me think (wrongly) that it must be the best track on the album so I avoided it until 2015 !

I said it above but I don't think a lot of 1980's music stands the test of time anyway - I thought "World Wide Live" was a wonderful live album at the time and I played it to death. But some 40 years later, if I am going to reach for a Scorpions live album, then it is pretty much always going to be "Tokyo Tapes", which I think has held up a lot better. I am the same with AC/DC - I'd always reach for "If You Want Blood" as a live album rather than the later ones.

Hi Phil, nice run through. However I was concerned when you mentioned soft touch sleeves. I am worried about the rise of these types of sleeves. I hate the feel of them (but that's my problem / personal preference). What I'm more interested in is their longevity. What will they be like after a few years? As I see it it's a plastic coating onto card and I fear it will not stand the test of time due to marking or deforming. Some of my books I have like this are starting to show wear. Any thoughts? Maybe a campaign alongside polylined to ban these sleeves...That said I'm tempted to get world Wide Live as I got rid of my vinyl copy. Any idea why Lonesome Crow hasn't been reissued? Probably licensing but it's the one I'm really after...cheers Dale

Hi Dale, thank you for watching. Personally I like the sold touch sleeves but like you I have some concerns about wear and tear. These are the only albums I have with this type of cover so far. @hodgestamez
@hodgestamez Год назад
Phil, one of the things that some companies do wrong when it comes to reissues is the quality of the sleeve's print. Sometimes they look like bad photocopies, blurry, faded, or even with a "screen" effect to them. How do you compare these new versions to the originals? Also, I have Blackout in several editions, the original vinyl, original CD, and the Audio Fidelity 24K Gold version, and all of them sound exactly the same, very thin, no punch at all. How does this new version sound, did they improve the sound?
