I've visited many bothies all over the UK and after a recent trip to Scotland, thought it was time I did them justice. In this video I first look at the locations of many of these remote mountain shelters. After this I take a more detailed look at the general Scottish bothy experience. Everything from the much loved fire to the less love wild toilet experience is touched upon. As basic as these bothies are, I've grown to love them for the unique experience they provide. I hope you enjoy and it inspires you to visit some if you haven't done so already.
Here is the link to that wild toilet article if you really want to find out more and just fancy a bit of a giggle: exitstreetview.com/going-to-t...

Over here in NZ we have over 900 huts and shelters in the forests and mountains. In my local mountain range, we have over 50. Some are modern others are 80-100 years old, but all are palaces when it's raining or there is a blizzard blowing. Enjoyed the video ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

I don’t think America has Bothys . The Adirondack mountains use to have a few shelters, in the 60s. Maybe they are still maintained, I don’t know. America is not a welcoming country now. Scotland is a wonderful place. I wish I could live there.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NEVER EVER LEAVE FOOD, CLOTHING OR CAMPING EQUIPMENT; CANDLES AND FUEL ONLY; EVERYTHING ELSE IS RUBBISH A VOLUNTEER HAS TO CARRY OUT !!
@danexitsstreetview3273
@danexitsstreetview3273 Год назад
Thanks for your feedback. I understand your thoughts but must disagree. I have been very grateful for food and clothing on past trips. If I use food left then I take the now rubbish out with me. Each to their own though and yes food with a short shelf life or was easily accessed by rodents is not advisable.
@davidhouldershaw-zt4ur
@davidhouldershaw-zt4ur Год назад
Are you an MBA volunteer? I am. Please do not leave food or equipment it encourages mice and has to be cleared away. No one is going to die because you didn't leave food !!
@danexitsstreetview3273
@danexitsstreetview3273 Год назад
@@davidhouldershaw-zt4ur I am not David no. Thanks for the work you do. As i said, i understand your point. I was purely talking from my own previous experience, where I've appreciated these items being left. I was caught out and appreciated the tin of tuna that was left. I of course took the rubbish away with me. I guess idiots who leave rubbish behind spoil it for others.
@davidhouldershaw-zt4ur
@davidhouldershaw-zt4ur Год назад
Thank you for your kind comments Unfortunately experience is that a single tin of bins kindly left is added to often leading to perishables and a vermin problem; roll mats get shredded by mice; sleeping bags and clothing become damp and mouldy....bothies become unhealthy spaces and clearing up eats into the time available to maintain the buildings
@danexitsstreetview3273
@danexitsstreetview3273 Год назад
@@davidhouldershaw-zt4ur I get this. I will add a comment about this below the video I've made. Obviously don't want to negatively affect these amazing shelters and the work that many including yourself do. ATB

Videos like this sharing locations only go to help with the vandalism that our bothies are suffering. It used to be word of mouth amongst hill goers, now they are being advertised for Joe Bloggs and company to spend a night or two smoking weed and drinking Buckfast
@danexitsstreetview3273
@danexitsstreetview3273 Год назад
Well that isn't the case for me. I would have never heard of them otherwise and can assure you I treat every building with respect. Your views reflect the tiny minority I think. I didn't arrive at each bothy to find the people you describe.
@fuckinellitsraymo
@fuckinellitsraymo Год назад
@@danexitsstreetview3273 Not a small minority, it's on the increase. Many landowners have shut theirs and the MBA are constantly coming a cross vandalism, burning furniture, chopping down trees, leaving rubbish, toilet paper scattered outside, etc. There are even people and oudoor companies organising bothy trips for up to 12 people for goodness sake. I have been a regular hillgoer and MBA volunteer for many years and the problem is getting worse. The publication of the bothy book brought complaints to new heights and was fiercely criticised. Have a look at some of the forums mate.
@danexitsstreetview3273
@danexitsstreetview3273 Год назад
@@fuckinellitsraymo I will take a look. It is a shame that idiots spoil it for others. Like I said, I show these buildings nothing but respect and only learned about them through social media. Others like me will appreciate finding out about them. It is a tricky one.
@highlandsmokery8421
@highlandsmokery8421 Год назад
It's very obvious that you don't maintain any open buildings, at considerable personal cost (time and money)... If you did, you'd understand why those of us who do, do NOT publicise the places. Thanks to self-agrandisers, the bothy system is at risk. Peanmeanach and an Cladach are the latest to be lost, as you really should be aware.
@danexitsstreetview3273
@danexitsstreetview3273 Год назад
@@highlandsmokery8421 Thanks for your comment. As I have said before, I love bothies and only found out about them through social media. Were they wrong for making me aware? It's an interesting debate. I'd like to think that the sort of person who would watch this video would be similar in outlook and attitude as myself. That is with a respectful attitude towards these open shelters and always leaving them the way we find them.
