The Godfather's archenemy Don Emilio Barzini, was without a doubt one of the most Powerful and Machiavellian opponents both Don Vito and Don Michael Corleone had to face. But many are unaware of the dark truth behind his rise. All the treachery, scheming and betrayal in which he did with ease.
This is the story of the Rise and inevitable fall of Don Barzini.
When we meet, Don Vito Corleone, he was at the height of his power, with a firm grip over the criminal underworld. And so, naturally he made some very powerful enemies.
And there was one man in particular, who can be seen as his equal in terms of power and influence. The only person that had dared to challenge the godfather, and almost succeed. Arguably, the most difficult opponent the Corleone Dons would ever face.
This was of course Don Emilio Barzini. As we all saw, Barzini had orchestrated a masterful plan that pushed the Corleone family to the brink of collapse. Barzini, like Don Vito, was a master of the game of power.
Although he was similar to Vito in many ways, Barzini was far more sly and Machiavellian. He had no morals or respect for tradition, he saw them as weaknesses, and so there were no limits to what he was willing to do, to get what he wants. Although he carried himself as a gentleman, a businessman. Behind all the smiles and handshakes, was a highly capable, ruthless and deceitful, mafia boss. Barzini was not like any of the other mob bosses, he was known to run his organisation like a Fortune 500 Company. Putting profits over everything else. His rise to power is full of treachery, betrayal and complete disregard for any and all consequences. We will break down a lot of the secrets behind Don Barzini, uncovering how he rose to power and the tactics he utilised to do so. This is the story of the Rise and inevitable fall of Don Barzini.

To his credit, Don Barzini was especially cunning and Machiavellian. The only problem was he left of trail of crumbs of his actions that led directly to his door and downfall. As Machiavelli stated, if you do a man harm, do it in such a way that he cannot retaliate and injure you. 🌹

If you look at Michaels uniform in the first film, he does have ribbons for the Pacific WWII campaign, a purple heart, and the silver star. While testifying in the second film, he states he was awarded a Navy Cross, a very prestigious award for bravery. One could probably say he definitely saw some sh*t as Marines fought the Japanese and he had the awards to prove it, in addition to his military tactics as a Captain.
@RaderizDorret
@RaderizDorret Год назад
@@bravocharliedelta4 To expand on how big a deal the Navy Cross is to those who don't know: it is one step below the Medal of Honor and is a combat only award. You don't earn one of those and live to tell the tale without being a true badass. The Army has the Distinguished Service Cross as its equivalent award and then-Captain Richard Winters earned that award during the Normandy Campaign when he led Easy Company on the assault on Brecourt Manor and captured those Nazi gun emplacements the day after they jumped into the combat zone.

Don Vito knew the war was a massive chess game. It must have taken considerable humility and foresight for him to strategize around the fact that his death wasn't the end of the game, just removing a critical piece from the board. He knew the next peace offering would be a trap to assassinate Michael. He warned Michael about this and made sure he was ready to eliminate all of the family's external threats and the traitors Tessio and Carlo.

the plot to the Godfather never made sense to me until i watched this video. always thought it was a great movie with a big hole in the plot line. why would they kill a powerful boss like Don Vito for turning them down? they said they needed a million dollars and protection from him. well the other families obviously had a million dollars and how can you get any protection from a guy if he is dead? so it never made sense to me why they woud make a move on him in the first place but this video puts all the pieces in place for me at last!! cheers.

@aliabu-talib332 Год назад
@@imverygerby I can understand why you might think that it was the old Don’s influence that kept the Corleone family afloat. But me thinks you should think a little deeper, Bro. Don Barmitzfah, excuse me, I mean Barzini, was a natural born loser. He was not a real prince. He was a snake. And both Michael and Sonny were trained mongooses. Barzini was an opportunist. He came to power via the fall of others. Both Sonny and Michael were trained to create their own lethal opportunities. Both not only were trained on how to see into the minds of their enemy, and then take the initiative. They were trained on how to set up the deadly initiative, carefully and deliberately. Both Sonny and Michael were trained by their father, who was a real prince. And Michael had the honor of being a battlefield commissioned Marine Captain, and had the medals to prove his worth. And this is no small insignificant variable. Michael was ddddangerous for real. Think my fellow Godfather fan. Donald Barzini underestimated both Sonny and Michael, and the depth of the Corleone Influence. The Corleone’s made true friends through genuine acts of kindness, and very strategic acts of mercy. It is obvious that they planned many, many moves ahead. How do you think that Michael knew where everyone was going to be at The Baptism Massacre? The Corelones had spies already in place in all the New York families' organizations. They’re called moles, because the bury deep into potential enemies infrastructure. The Corleones, on the other hand, had exorcised many devils in their organization early on, and hired men who were very close to them. That is… until the old Don passed from this life. Then Michael played like he was slipping to ferret out snakes, false friends, and get his enemies to relax. And The Fools went for that clever bit of farcical fiction… including poor deluded Tessio. I believe that Michael and Sonny suspected Don Barfeinie, from the jump. I believe it was Don Corleone that stayed Michael and Sonny’s hand to not strike on suspicion. They were ordered to wait on clear evidence. Why? Don Vito Corleone had old school honor. His son’s did not… especially not Michael. I suspect that Michael believed, and studied, the Prussian military strategist Carl von Clausewitz’s concept of total war even before he enlisted in the Marine Corp. Barzini’s foolish false pride and inordinate greed caused him to fatally underestimate the true cunning, ruthlessness, and wisdom, of the Corleone Family. Barzini made the same mistake that the South did in The American Civil War. They thought that Grant was just a drunk, and that Sherman was just a idealist mad man. Wrong. If Don Vito had died via the shopping scene hit, I believe that Sonny and Michael would have acted in tandem. One the true, but wise bold street strategist, The other like the young, but experienced cold blooded military strategist. That was their true nature. And what went down after Their father’s death years later, would have been perpetrated a hell of a lot sooner if Pops died initially. Those undeserving claimants to the crown, would have never known what hit them… just like it played out in the end anyway, Dig it.

He stood unarmed with a baker in front of his father's hospital while a car full of hit men drove past, and he looked two men right in the eye before shooting them dead. Barzini was a master strategist. His plan had almost everything to succeed. It's a masterclass on how to build a strategically sound plan for takeover: it didn't rely on the success of a single action; had many ways to succeed, was redundant; was set in such way that whatever the outcome of each step, the odds were still in his favor. However, it relied on incomplete information on the Corleones. Barzini didn't have knowledge of all the capabilities and resources of the Corleones, especially Michael. Underestimating Michael was Barzini's single mistake, and the only reason why his plan failed.

I consider "The Godfather Trilogy" probably the best of the best. Everyone knows how much I love these movies. My least favorite is #3. I did conclude long before this 3rd movie hinted at the murder of one of the popes. John Paul 1 died 1 month into his role as Pope. I did consider that he was murdered. WHY? He had planned to clean up the Vatican Bank. This led me to believe that many of the hierarchy within the Vatican were on the "take." In Godfather 3, the Pope drank milk and was found dead in the morning. Hmmm? Now, Fredo alludes to this at the table. It was Vito's birthday. What is Vitos Northgate? It's a Final Jeopardy type question. Think about the discussion around Michael's enlistment in the Navy. I know the answer. Do you?

Barzini may have been a very intelligent and cunning leader, but just like one of the many themes of the trilogy, he would succumb to the comfort zone, as did Vito, Sonny, Sollozzo and Mcluskey before him. What started as a battle/war that could *and realistically should* have been won by him towards the end of the film, quickly became flushed down the toilet the minute he let his ego show at the commission meeting. As soon as Vito saw Barzini sitting front and center at the end of the table, it all made sense and validated his long held suspicions of who the real mastermind was. How????? Because not only was Barzini taking control of a peace meeting that didn’t involve himself directly “aparrently,” but because up until that point, that was actually Vito’s seat at the table! Barzini being the experienced gangster he was should definitely not have done those things, but reguardless, he was a greedy and evil man that got what was coming to him. It you rewatch the commission scene, and notice closely, most of the other various dons in attendence from across the nation appeared quite upset to see Vito getting “ran out of town,” despite remaining quiet and not voicing concerns at the time.

Barzini really was very, very close to winning. -The hit on Vito was successful except for the fact that he somehow survived despite getting shot 5 times; by all rights, he should died. -If Michael was 5 minutes late to the hospital, the war is over then and there. -The hit on Sonny was a masterpiece. (RIP🪦) -He tracked Michael down in Sicily and nearly killed him there, thwarted only by dumb luck. -He basically “won” the peace settlement, getting Vito to share his connections without making any concessions of his own and assumed informal leadership of the commission. -Tattaglia was his puppet and he controlled Cuneo and Stracchi. -He turned Tessio, who would’ve led Michael to his death had it not have been for Vito’s guidance. If one of these things plays out differently, Barzini becomes the boss of all bosses.
