Post moonlord content. Killing the cultists summons a variant of the lunatic cultist boss who sends multi-colored fire after your ass. The pillars are replaced with massive torches and the mobs are all based around fire and the biome they're in.

Not just that, but he said he would make a mechanic SPECIFICALLY for punishing those who place the "wrong torches", implying that there's a right and a wrong way to play a sandbox game.

Effect of negative luck wasn't very very very minor either. It could mean 20% less drop rate.

@@KCrouch-t2o He was so angry at people using torches in "wrong" biomes and ignoring them for normal torches that instead of incentivising matches, he actively punished you for not doing so by having it affect your drop rate if you were in proximity to a biome torch used in the "wrong" biome. He eventually dialed back the negative part of the mechanic but that's primarily what "torch drama" means.

@@spinyjustspiny3289 Given the inclusion of this "boss", I would hope he reinstates the negative torch luck mechanic to incentivize people to do it early so they can get that luck bonus more easily.

@@Armameteus the reason it was a bad mechanic is that once hardmode happens, you would have to swap out torches when the hallow and corruption invade a bunch of your world. Suddenly all those areas where you placed torches with no penalty now incur a penalty

@@marcosperezomg All the more reason to purify it? That _is_ one of the loose "story" mechanics of the game; you ask the Dryad how pure your world is and she gives you a percentage and encourages you to fully purge the world of Hallow/Corruption/Crimson.

To be honest with ya, I don't really think a 10% decrease in drop rates would differ much. I just hear a lot of players were whiny for some reason

@@fattytan1377 The luck mechanic is invisible and very subtle, so players would just get handicapped for no reason, and it also affects damage. Not to mention players with normal torches in older worlds would have a lot of pain if not for this easter egg. Fortunately they removed bad torch luck.

Torches alone could not affect drop rates that much. Not even CLOSE. You had to stack so many modifiers to -50%, it was impossible to do it by accident. Look at the wiki page to see how luck is calculated in detail. Torches could give -0.3 luck. In order for drop rates to be halved, you needed -1 luck.

@@zacharyb9636 It's never -50%. If you trust the wiki, then "if the base chance is 1 in X, the chance will become 1 in Y, where Y is a random number between X and X*2-1 (inclusive)." That is on average 1 out of 1.5*x, or 1/3 lower. Also it's very possible to accidentally kill ladybugs, so -0.2 once in a while is hard to avoid. Never actually seen a golden ladybug, but I imagine accidentally killing one is possible as well. Point is "impossible to do by accident" is...maybe not true for a mechanic that seems to designed to happen by accident.

The maths people do for this is so bad it's hilarious. The luck stat for positive and negative are calculated differently, at 1 luck its a 50% increase in drop rates, but at -0.7 luck, the most you could possibly attain before bad torch luck was removed, its only a ~15% decrease. You also need to kill a ladybug every 4 minutes for this to even work or else its at -0.3 luck due to torch luck which is roughly a ~10% decrease. That is nowhere NEAR the 50% decrease I've seen multiple people saying. Even for damage its at most a 5% decrease in damage, which is really not that much, basically 1 menacing accessory. Torch luck was implemented badly, it shouldn't have had bad effects since the start and Redigit did screw this up, but it wasn't remotely near how bad people were making it sound. Funny how redigit hasn't posted on Reddit after he got downvote bombed over bad maths. Almost like he made a free update to a 9 year old game and people got pissed off over something a random dude was spouting that was incorrect information found through data mining instead of listening to the person who literally wrote the code, or at bare minimum supervised it saying as it was his idea.

Not quite, but bad torch luck alone would reduce drop rates by 20%. Which might be fine in another game, but in Terraria, where some items have a 1/10000 drop rate, it was a kick in the balls.

@@ghostface1909 No, only negative torch luck was removed. Having proper biome torches with other luck modifiers (garden gnome, luck potions, lantern night, killing the guide for some reason, touching a natural ladybug) can still almost double your damage and drops.
