The Secret Life of The Red Squirrel
Living in the middle of the forest I was able to watch wild Red Squirrels as they moved through their home range. This documentary film follows them for a year on their journey. It details their behaviour as they avoid woodland predators, cache their winter supplies and rear their young.

I had an Eastern Grey squirrel, he had fallen from his nest and his mom was trapped and relocated so he was an orphan. My son found him and brought him home, he was only a week old, hardly any hair, eyes closed, barely able to crawl. We raised him feeding him puppy formula with calcium supplement in a tiny syringe for weeks and weeks, starting every 2-3 hour feedings eventually going to 4 hours then he weened himself around 5-6 weeks. I was so attached to this little squirrel and looked forward to seeing him climb his favorite Oak tree each morning when I would let him out for the day in the backyard. He would get so excited to be going out to the tree he would jump prematurely to it and usually was a few inches short but it was funny as hell. I really gotta say they are very smart, have tremendous personality and are like a mix of puppies, kittens and a toddler all rolled into a little nibbling machine with one hell of a strong bite.

Such an active and intelligent animal. 3 red squirrels live in the pine wood around our cottage in Poland. We give them some nuts. Sometimes they chase one another. But I took photos and footages of them eating by side peacefully. We avoid to spoil them. They certainly know us and watch our movements but we don't want them to be tame.

Ahh yes the European red squirrels with their cute puffy ears and chirpy chatter. In the US we have mostly gray squirrels with shorter ears and aren't very chatty, but they are wonderful and friendly, I even feed them by hand on my back porch. :)

I remember watching the documentary on pine marten and enjoyed it immensely, so I watched it twice, and now this one is about red squirrels. These are realistic pictures, with not-annoying commentary full of exciting information. Video has its own unique style of a wildlife documentary which is intimate. At the end of the video, you think you have known the squirrel for a long time. I want to know what happens to it. I can't imagine the amount of work and time invested in these beautiful documentaries. Can't wait for the next one. Fantastic. Thanks.

A Swedish study shows that out of 600 stomach contents of red squirrels examined, only 4 contained remnants of birds or eggs. Hi Thomas. Thanks for your comment. You're right. The research I read also stated that it was rare and that they only occasionally eat birds eggs. That said, as the study you cited shows, it is true to say that they occasionally eat them as they are found in the stomach contents.. In the film I say "and rarely they can even eat birds eggs and chicks" which I think is a fair and true statement based on the research. Like you I love Red Squirrels. As you rightly point out, they're not a significant threat to birds.

Theres very few of them today they once lived happily all over britain in huge numbers ,until some insane people decided to import large numbers of grey squirrels into britain and thought they would integrate,,before long they ruled the country and drove the red squirrels to live in just a few areas of britain ,These grey squirrels didn't want to in integrate and live in peace with rheir fellow red native squirrels ,they wanted to rule and did as their numbers increased WHEN I STUDIED THE RED AND GREY SQUIRRELS AT THE Charles Robert Darwin school of life in Salford ,I noticed that what happened to the red squirrels in britain is now happening to the white british people in britain Professor peacock my teacher tried to silence me ,and persecuted me and tried to get me expelled just for me writing a paper about my findings and sending it to the curator of Chester zoo and to the home secretary at the houses of parliament He said i was far right and a trouble causer ,I didn't even know what far right was until i asked my maths teacher

Any chance that elaboration can be provided on how they have the social skill of warning tail wags while being solitary animals? In general they seem absurdly over-intelligent for their lifestyles.

They move around in small groups. Mine moved in a loose group of 3 individuals. They weren't always together and sometimes 1 or 2 of them were absent. They're not subtle. I could hear them squabbling and see the trees rustling from a hundred metres away. They're constantly fighting over resources but they're also offering one another safety in numbers. Tail wagging warns the others of potential threats.

The red squirrel was once a common sight to be seen in England, until the grey squirrel was introduced by America, like everything that is connected to America, it destroys everything it comes in contact with ☝

yes those in charge with the power do not care about anything other than that power and money, we as American citizens suffer and are assumed to behave and think just as they do, but it is not even close, we do not agree with the way our gov operates
