This doesn't take lines into account. There is always a self checkout open and almost never an attended lane with no line. Still quicker to self check out a lot of the time.
...that's forced perception. If I refuse to open more than two registers even though there's eight people in line because I just installed eight self-checkouts, there's going to be lines. Just remember: every self-checkout is one less paycheck and one more offshore bank account funded.
You’re absolutely right. My wife and l never use a cashier whenever self checkout is possible. Even if lines weren’t a factor. We would be done quicker, because we don’t play around at the self checkout. We get our shit and GO.
@@thegoat1817 but if you wish, you'd know that social interaction is the only way to get friends. If it's not possible in real life at first, you'd have to try online friends and then later on socialize if you meet them. Can confirm, I don't have friends too :D
try a walmart in an urban area in the USA, it will not just “feel” like the self checkout is faster, the self checkout is the only way to leave the store.
Am I the only one who absolutely loves the self-checkout machines? They're so simple, hassle-free (where I live) and they require no human interaction.
I love packing my groceries the way I like, especially since the pandemic started and I could sort groceries by what can or can't sit in the garage for a few days.
@@stadot1427 Yeah same. I don't want to awkwardly throw the products in my bag/backpack as fast as i can so as not to make people waiting too long and stuff.
I used to work as a Cashier at Walmart and i loved scanning the items. I love going through self checkout with even a full cart (sorry other shoppers lol) cause i get to scan! ..that also means i have to bag which was my least favorite part..
As someone whom regularly uses self checkouts, I’m gonna have to call CAP 🧢 on this one. Typically where there are self checkouts, there are fewer cashiers hence fewer lanes open and longer lines within them.
@Bittle Still sounds way too high. I've literally met no one who actively dislikes self check outs over regular ones. Most of the time people dont give a shit.
They keep pushing on cashless payments. But feeling it's quicker is kinda relevant. I had this kind of feeling when had an option to travel with few buses on the path or wait longer for the one that can do the entire way to my destination eventually almost the same time.
I agree because once my parents went to the line while I went to the self checkout twice because forgot to get some ice cream and i got out before my dad could even pay
It goes faster because nobody be going for self-checkout. Short line and not to mention, I don't wanna embarrass myself if I'm only buying like 3 things
Haha, in theory maybe. The reality is more like: the one human check-out is crowded with boomers and there are five self checkouts and one is about to be cleared. By the time I get out there with my energy drink after taking my sweet ass time the granny from the end of the line became the third in line
No lines at self checkout. Also the baggers at stores are slow AF. This all being said in the future you will just put items in your cart and it will be automatically taken out of your bank account.
Wasn't amazon doing something like that? You walk into a store and a bunch of cameras + sensors will watch what you picked up and automatically withdraws money from your amazon account when you leave the store
And people will still bitch about how poor people on government assistance should stop being parasites and get jobs. ...while enabling store ownership to retain less employees at smaller wages.
Why not go through the express lane? That's what they're for. The more that people use the self-checkout, the less service lanes the stores will staff. You don't get paid a wage to bag your own groceries, you don't get a discount, and you don't increase demand for staffing when you check yourself out. Why are you working for free just so the owner has less expenses?
@@Sami-es8db Cashiers are experienced in it and have all of the items on a belt at the same elevation as the scanner, making it easier to fastly scan it.
Tbh the self check outs are better for me because you don’t have to just watch another person scan your stuff = less human interaction and scanning in can be pretty fun- especially with the scanning gun thing. Win win
Self-checkouts = less employees needed. Less employees = less costs to the owner. Less costs to the owner do not mean a drop in prices, they mean an increase in funds to a tax shelter. ...less money circulating = money needs to be printed = inflation = cost of product goes up.
I love self checkout because i can actually put my stuff in my backpack without feeling rushed but when i have just a few things i go to the regular checkout so the cashiers won’t be made redundant
Former cashier here. The self checkout is faster if you know how to use it. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the cashier double scanning something. That shit is on you :)
For me it isn’t that deep, I just don’t wanna interact with other people that much, or at least when I have a choice to not interact. I like doing things myself
I work at a grocery store without self checkouts. When I do shop at other stores with self check outs, I use them, and find I am much faster checking myself out than the average employee at those stores. Mainly because it's my own stuff and I don't really care how it gets bagged, so I'm just much quicker doing it myself. Plus, not having to talk with people is a huge plus for me.
As a cashier that does both, most of y'all literally take 2x as long in the self checkout. If you're over 40, almost positive you take 4-5x longer than a cashier would.
Key part is over 40. Most people, younger generations, do not like human interactions at checkout, especially in USA where they’re always asking for donations for charity. I used to be a cashier and even I’d always look for self checkout when possible.
I’m a cashier at a grocery store as well and they don’t take as long because the process is long, they stand there looking at their lists or doing unnecessary stuff, which again is the older generation and still does not mean self check explicitly is slow, it mean people that use self check and are usually older take too much time standing there. People will stand in my lane instead of going to self check out right off that bat and waste upwards to 1-4 minutes having gon through my lane instead of having payment ready at the self check out and getting tf outta there.
As someone who works at a grocery store please don't tell people this the impatient people are the only joys I have as seeing them walk away from my lane gives me relief
I can scan faster than the casier at my shop, i don't have to interact with anyone else, and most people don't go through the self-checkout so i also don't have to wait in a long queue
The long queue is forced perspective from not having enough lines open. If people stopped using the self-checkout and started bitching about how they need to hire more employees and open more registers, the lines would be non-existent.
I think the study might have one flaw and that's for “unscannable” items, stuff like fresh foods with no barcode, items with the security tags that need to be removed and issues either human or technical. I assume the study was just done in a actual store and we're just based on time spent at the registered
@@radically4405 no kids no.... few adults have but that's through them drink silly amounts. Restrictrd cos of high sugar n caffeine intake think you gotta be 17 to buy them
I guess I’m part of the 7% because I avoid human checkout lanes at all costs. No one uses my tote bags or keeps my organization for groceries (cold foods together, boxed foods, cans, etc.). Tote bags are a lot easier to carry to my apartment with fewer trips, but if you even try to use them with another bagger then it just holds up the line 🥲
I've timed it many times. It takes me far less time to check myself out than it does to wait in line for all the people in line ahead of me at a cashier check out
This actually Hurt grocery stores the cashier and so I choose to go the cashier I like interaction with humans it's a priceless experience and sometimes it makes me come want to go back to grocery store and or super market I'm mid 80s who grow up in 90s as kid and early 00s as teenager & mid 00s as young adult , in person experience at grocery stores at big box retail stores it's bring me great remembering when my mom take me to stores and shopping malls my mom died from a stroke and high blood pressure and high cholesterol and was anemic , I miss my mom so when igo to the stores it's just makes me feel better and happy , it feels with all this new technology that you lose some of the nostalgia of the in-person experience at stores.
I was a sacker and later a cashier at my first job. Checkers now are slow as hell and rude. I prefer to use self checkout.. it's faster and I don't have to deal with a cashier's attitude.
As other people said, I don’t want the awkward conversation and I only have a handful of items and it think it’s pointless to go in a person checkout line when the self checkout is for less items
I am a cashier at a grocery store. The store I work at got rid of all the self check out lanes because of too many people not scanning all their groceries and walking out without paying .
This phenomenon is the reason I'd rather take the long way home instead of getting caught in rush hour traffic, at least I'm spending that time driving and not waiting to move.
As a cashier let me tell you that the self checkouts are super sensitive and even if you don't do anything they still go off. The overall process of self check is slower especially if you're using it for the first time. I see the point of them, they just need to make them work better
I've come to realize that I do not like shopping at the grocery store AND working at the grocery store in the same visit. No more self checkout for me.
When supermarkets put in these they cut open lanes. This leads to loads of trolley queues at proper checkouts, making the self-service one far quicker.
In our country we have small portable self-scanners. So you scan it before you put it in the shoppingcart. Then at the Booth, you have to scan a QR code and pay with your card. Way easier.
if someone is not used to it, they may be slower but personally after working in retail it really takes me the same time on even less to scan the product than it takes the cashiers (some of them are so slow ugh), plus saving time on making the conversation and answering questions because i do everything myself ahh and usually the queue to self checkout is shorter 😬
Im an Indonesian, there's no such thing as self checkout here, but I have plans of moving to America, I cannot wait to try self checkout, it's gonna be an entirely new feeling
I've been speedrunning self-checkout at a grocery store near my workplace for a year now. 75% of the time I spend waiting for all those _fancy_ transition animations to end *or* waiting for the next step screen to load
Here in the Netherlands you can get a scanner beforehand and scan your itemd while you put them in your cart. When you are then going to pay you put the scanner back and you can already pay.
Considering most of the time I only go into a shop for a few items.. I'm not gonna wait in line behind people with carts for a cashier when I can walk to an open self checkout, take a min to scan, and wait for a helper as an item inevitably doesn't want to be weighed properly.
I prefer self check out, because then I am not rushed and also can put everything I want to buy in a logical order into my bag. Because I choose the order of what product is scanned.
I love self checkouts, the ones in Tesco are the best cuz you can also scan your shopping whilst you shop, then you just scan the barcode on the checkout machine and pay, and go. (There's a slot for the scanner)
Love self checkout 🤩 Hopefully they won't drop it. Don't really care for others touching my food. Bagging them the best way for me. Last time I had to go through the cashier my bread got very smashed also my bananas were all bruised.
I actually like self checkouts for this reason. The people cashier's stress me out because they go too fast and watch my every move, the self checkouts don't give me dirty looks when I run out with my shopping without paying.
No shit the use of drugs is through the roof, you people have deep psychological problem. If you live in the US you can bypass everything and just leave with stuff. Nobody will try to stop you. Well, if you live in a Democrat state.
Its quicker to check out with a person if you have more/bulky items. But if you have a small items that cant fit into 2 bags, personal checkout it quicker (if you arent slow at scanning). Also lines go buy quicker in self checkout areas though because there’s typically more self check out units per a single line vs the 1 stall, 1 line set up in a human check out
