Youre going to love this... back in the day, I traded like half my SNES games plus Christmas money for the VirtualBoy. It didnt take long before I realized it sucked. But my neighbor friend loved it. So I convinced him to trade his nomad and 6 games for the VirtualBoy and all the games I had for it. Man... that was like 25 years ago. I still have it too. Works well.

Cool tech but such a battery sink. Rechargeables at the time were crap - NiCad which couldn't hold much power, and were lucky to push 1.25V. Good luck running your Nomad on those for long. I do have a Game Gear with Master Gear adapter to play Sega Master on it. Also "cool" but functionally not that useful again due to battery life and a very small screen.

As a broke kid that desperately wanted one of these at the time…imo, the main reason the Nomad didnt take, as well as why Sega went under…was that they released too many consoles/upgrades in too short a time. As well as the N64 and PS1 coming out. The Sega CD, 32x, Sega Channel, Nomad, and Saturn…all came out practically at the same time, between 93 and 95. Considering the trend before and after that has been for a console to have hundreds of games and a half-decade lifespan minimum…its easy to see how consumers either were overwhelmed by Sega’s console releases, or didnt even know about them. The Nomad was insane though…only now being equalled by Switch and Steamdeck.

A lot of Sega's failures can be attributed to terrible marketing. The 32X was released in November 1995. I had never heard of it until June 1998 when I saw it on the shelf at a department store for $20. The Sega Nomad was also released in 1995 and I never heard of it until just a few years ago. And it's not like I was completely clueless at the time, I was a huge Sega Genesis fan and was regularly buying games for it from 1993-1996. Sega just didn't promote their new products enough.

I was there when the Sega Nomad was launched. Sega thought it would be their next step from the Game Gear. Things didn't go as they were hoping. It backfired HARD, mainly because the Nomad DEVOURED battery life as it was a Sega Genesis with a backlit screen, lit up mainly by a fluorescent light bulb much like the Game Gear before it. The battery pack was recommended for the Nomad, but it's battery life was worse due to poor design. Then there was the price point which was a the time EXPENSIVE. Well, all things considered, the Sega Nomad was a good idea, but one that would be perfected with the 3DS XL and Nintendo Switch decades later. I knew when the Sega nomad launched that it would not do well. I'm pretty much the opposite of that moron Pachter. My predictions come true inevitably. His however failed to launch because he isn't a gamer.

Same. I got a Gameboy in 1992. My friend got a Game Gear in 1993. At this point, the Gameboy *owned* the handheld market. She let me play the Game Gear once, just to "prove" how much better it was than the GameBoy. I was astonished. It really was. Game Gears disappeared in the next couple of years, yet GameBoys if anything became *more* popular. 🤦
