Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton) is Queen Regent of France now that her son, Charles IX has come of age. Distracted by the personal conflicts of the Valois children, a new mysterious prophet named Edith gains a loyal following who vow to challenge the current religious establishment, sparking tension across the country. Feeling threatened by the rising strain, the divided court turn to their own schemes for selfish benefit. The Guises commit unholy acts while the Bourbons turn to a familiar foreign sovereign, Queen Elizabeth I of England (Minnie Driver) in hopes of personal gain.
As France falls into political and religious turmoil, Catherine struggles to maintain her power, but The Serpent Queen will do whatever she needs to regain control.

Guys, we know this show is filled with historical inaccuracies. Like many other shows like it (Reign, Tudors, The White Queen, The White Princess), this show is historical fiction. They tend to divert from history because it's interesting.

Mary Queen of Scotts grew up in France and barely spoke the "Scottish/English" of her time. Her whole private court was French.

The show isn’t meant to be accurate it’s meant to be entertainment loosely based on the events of the 1560s and 70s. I do like how they portray Elizabeth I however.

I was really worried about their casting for Elizabeth. I adore Minnie but was unsure she could pull this off. I am more than pleasantly surprised. She’s brilliant, camp, perfection. I was worried she’d be too strict and stuffy or too silly and over the top but so far she’s marvelous in this little clip. Equal parts terrifying and humorous just like the real Elizabeth I.

July 12th! Holy moly, that's not too far! Is there a word for wanting a show to get huge so all the people involved can get rewarded, recognized and paid for their great work, but yet you want to keep the show exclusive, just among the small group of cool people who truly appreciate it?

It's a different queen. The protagonist is Queen Mother Catherine de Medici, and this queen is Queen Elizabeth I.

Precisely. Queen Elizabeth I of England and Catherine de Medici Queen of France weren’t related. Elizabeth’s second cousin Mary (Queen of Scots) was Catherine’s former daughter-in-law. Elizabeth (1533-1603) and Catherine (1519-1589) died at 69 and their reigns overlapped some thirty years.

You're thinking of Mary Tudor AKA "Bloody Mary". That was Elizabeth's sister. This is Mary Stuart, "Mary, Queen of Scots". And not really a power struggle, it was more a case of some Catholics wanting a Catholic monarch in Mary Stuart to replace the Protestant Elizabeth, and getting involved in assassination plots, as the Pope had absolved anyone who killed Elizabeth of guilt. But most English considered themselves English first and Catholic second, so the plots never really went anywhere.
