Hi Lisa, I have been watching and LOVING all of your episodes. The Shetland yarn you have spun are so very beautiful! I think my heart skipped a beat! I need a Shetland fleece to process and turn into some beautiful yarn. Thank you for all you share. I am learning so much.

You are fascinating to listen to, and have inspired me. A personal thank you from me, as you are literally pulling me through a double stroke. Stuck in a hospital bed, missing family and friends and crafts, I literally had one of your videos pop up, and you have become my personal Angel inspiring me to fight and get back to my spinning, with a lot of information from you. Never doubt that yourself. Xx

I pray you get well again soon. Know that your spindle and wool are waiting patiently for you. Thank you for writing as I have struggled to produce any videos these past several months, but you are inspiring me to come back. I will have much more time soon to devote to my channel. It’s viewers like you that encourage me. Thank you. 🥰

Hi Lisa - I am so overwhelmed and flattered by your comments about our wool! I can tell you have really done your homework on your journey to understand and appreciate the Shetland breed and wool - I am looking forward to future podcasts and expect I will learn many things from your very thorough and careful reporting on your research. I am on episode 3, and am now officially binging on your podcasts while I flick and spin and I am enjoying every second. I love when you sing words and when you chuckle at your own jokes and stories! I find myself foolishly grinning while listening to your descriptions and enjoying your passion for fiber. I am hoping at some point you go into a discussion on the different weights you talk about, I get asked what weight my handspun yarns are and have no response as I don't really understand how to measure them. Thank you very much for featuring our farm and wool.

I loved watching this episode - all the colours 🥰😍 I cracked up when you said koo koo burra! 😂 I’ve never heard it pronounced that way before but it sounds really cute. Down here at the dag-end of the world, we say Cook A Burra. The syllables are short. It’s one of the few Aussie words we don’t drawl. There’s a Kookaburra family kacking right now in the tree beside the dam. Poetic 😊

Another great podcast, Lisa! It’s becoming my weekly accompaniment to fiber processing every Sunday this summer. I have the Footsteps book and used it as inspiration when we traveled across Scotland two years ago. Farmers welcomed hikers through their fields (as long as we closed the gates behind us) and I collected loads of locks from fence rows and scrubby bushes to spindle spin along the way. A delight! I’m so glad to see your audience increasing and more enjoying your delightful episodes. Thank you for the wonderful information and beautiful video.

I couldnt think what you would knit with them other than mittens and hats! they were fun to look at but very hard to think what could be knit from those colors and textures! thank you for showing us the process of your shetland study, its really fun to see how its all done!

I like having a variety of different kinds of fleeces in order to combine them and get different textures. I am obsessed with wool and it’s texture. I love prepping a fleece just as much as spinning it. I just got my first Icelandic fleece. It is a lambs fleece and it is soft and the two fibers combine so well together.

Hi, this podcast was the background to my fibre prep this morning, Romney rather than Shetland though. I took a copy of in the footsteps of sheep to read on our trip to the Outer Hebrides last year ( still chapter or two to read on our next trip) really enjoyed reading it. I'm very fortunate to be in the position where I'm familiar with many of the locations mentioned in the book x I also love spinning shetland and rather envious of your fleece. We don't have coated fleece over here but also the prices are probably somewhat less, this year I have acquire an assortment of fleece varying from GBP2 per fleece at the farm gate to GBP10 per kilo sorted and graded from a regular seller. The lack of fibre festivals also means a large amount being spent on postage, sometimes more than the cost of the fleece ( one farmer threw in a fleece for free to make the weight up). Also more farmers are selling the fleece rather than take the poor Wool Marketing Board price this year. Happy spinning, Sue x

Lisa - I love the idea of doing a gradient project with the different colors. Oh my gosh, that is Jen from Whispering Pines who wrote the article.

two summers ago, i arrived at a local(ish) fiber festival just in time to catch the sheep shearing demonstration. it was a Shetland lamb with a beautiful dark-brown fleece. my hand shot up instantly when the announcer asked if anyone was interested in purchasing the wool. a few hours later, i unfolded the still-warm fiber in the middle of my apartment, and began the incredible journey of turning it into yarn. this was my first time working with Shetland wool, and i was afraid that it would prove too scratchy for me to even spin. boy was i wrong! it was incredibly soft, and the bounce/crimp in the fiber was beyond anything i could have expected from the breed. being the animal's first fleece, it was a small one, so i blended it with some Targhee to produce a sweater's worth of finished yarn. however, i would love to have enough Shetland fiber to spin up a garment worth of fiber one of these days.

Hi Lisa, I love what you have done with your Shetland! Amazing spinning. I have never seen such a fine fleece. I will definitely check out Jen Johnson. The yarn they have at the yarn shop that they all Shetland does not hold a candle to yours. If you want to spin very fine yarn I suggest you get a vintage or antique saxony wheel with the tiny oriface. I know, more equipment to purchase! I had two Louet wheels and I never could spin so fine as I can now that I have my Country Craftsman wheel that I purchased last December. It is very fast , but it spins yarn that is just like fine thread . It was a learning curve to tackle spinning on it, but I have mastered it. I can’t wait to try knitting lace with the yarn I have spun on it. I am really enjoying your videos. In my opinion they are the best on Utube on the subject of spinning and knitting🥰

Lovely episode as usual. I just purchased some fleeces from my local farmer, including a flecket Shetland who came from Yell, Shetland and the most stunning blue faced Leicester all for a pittance despite willingly paying over 5 times of what he would be paid by the wool marketing board! I loved reading In the Footsteps of Sheep, such a great book. How do you decide whether to comb or card your fibre?
@SoulfulSpinning
@SoulfulSpinning 4 года назад
Generally if the staple length is over 3 inches I comb, under 3 inches card. I have decided to card these Shetland fleeces on my finest drum carder after flicking out the tips with a small flick carder to reduce to noils in the batt. Then it’s long draw I think! Your fleeces sound amazing. Thank you for tuning in 🤗.

Lisa, your videos are brilliant! Yours is one of the most interesting and stimulating series of podcasts and I always learn so much - thank you! I love your breed studies and your book reviews. Your skeins are amazing - I can’t imagine being such an accomplished spinner - especially right now as I have literally just plied my first woolen long draw mule fleece and made a terrible skein - my worst ever! I have never seen a yarn with such energy and chaos😬! I thwacked so much that I scared the dogs and now I wait to see what magic might occur overnight!! 🥴I recently read the Golden Fleece and really enjoyed it... Thanks again for your wonderful videos😊
