As the spouse of someone who has lost a lot of the same things you have I can honestly say his sons and me just want him to stop drinking. We will forgive, and come closer if you’re trying as well. Don’t ever underestimate the propensity of people to forgive. Your family wants to forgive you. You just have to start moving closer to what you believe to be the right steps towards them.

Okay you have identified the things that motivate you to destroy yourself! That's VERY good! Naming them is a crucial step! Now treat those feelings like a pack of abused puppies. You can pick them up and comfort them.... they are like they are because of what they went through but there is a part of you that can help them... that part already found them, let that part heal and train them. Keep listening to Amber and watch a few videos from a good dog trainer (like the dog whisperer), you got this buddy.

Being that I went to jail in 2011 for fraud I carry guilt with me every day for what I did to my family. But I am first to admit yes I went to jail and I stuffed up. Because I felt so down on myself I was with an addict for over ten years since jail and I thought all I deserved was to be with an addict because I was a criminal. But I know I’ve done nothing since and my family still love me. But that guilt for what I did to my family never goes away. Which is me feeling empathy. Which is something addicts lack.

Could you talk a bit about helping the family overcome their own shame and guilt in the role of addiction and codependency?
@julienorris6648
@julienorris6648 Месяц назад
From my experience as a family member, the things I do or say that cause shame in my addicted loved one are actually intended to elicit empathy. I just don't think an addict can separate themselves enough to not make everything personal.

In your sessions with clients, how to you reduce the shame in thei conversation? What kinds of things do you say?
@sharonscott1776

Even though they don’t admit they feel shame for their addiction, but they feel shame. Is that the same as they would feel bad for the hurtful things they do and say to us in addiction? But they just don’t say it?
@PutTheShovelDown
