Shohei Ohtani is the Step Curry of baseball - just look at the smiles of the opposing fans watching both Shohei - Ohtani being a 2 way player is irresistible to fans in any city, he's no bat flipper, no beat his chest "look at me" type of player, no yelling at himself or other players, I think he even salutes the home umpire before each at bat which is a J League trait and sign of respect. Once in lifetime performance in the era of non-doping. Shoehei is absolutely a player you drop everything to watch👍

@thedarkemissary
@thedarkemissary 3 года назад
I really don't understand the "hit it the other way" argument. It's like y'all underestimate MLB pitching. Like hitting is easy? It's like y'all never heard of an overpowered strategy. Just because something theoretically CAN be beaten, doesn't mean it's EASY to do so. And if a strategy works 90% of the time with little to no chance of failure, then your game has become unbalanced. And your players are exploiting this imbalance to reduce the competitiveness of your game. Then again, MLB has no salary cap, so maybe competitiveness isn't a priority..... also no viewership.

Totally agree. Also, to those arguing "it's just good defense," why not get rid of the infield fly rule then? If you intentionally drop the ball for a double play, is that good defense? Or did the offense just get fucked because of some loophole in the game's design?
@LeStramii
@LeStramii 3 года назад
Idk if you have heard but as an opposing team you are trying to defeat your opponent. If you know a guy is going to hit the ball in a certain area of the field more often than not you’re going to position your fielders accordingly. Thus making it more difficult to get a hit which in turn increases the competitiveness of the game
@thedarkemissary
@thedarkemissary 3 года назад
@@LeStramii Incorrect. You've confused "competitiveness" with "difficulty." Competitiveness is derived from the balance and opportunity to succeed alotted to EACH participant. Uncharacteristically Moronic response by Rich. A shift is meant to do exactly what it did in that case. If you hate the shift the best thing you, any particular team or batter can do is to beat it! Otahni Great star that he is understandably decided he Would still try to pull the ball, smash the hell out of the ball, the risk being that they have more defenders there should he not launch it out of the park. Still - woulda been I think even for him better percentages to win the game if he tried to hit it where they ain’t. To hate the shift is childish and stupid I think - makes more sense hating the approach (ie. None) that batters or teams take to the shift.

Coming from a cricket background, I have no issue with the shift. You put your fielders where they need to be, but you also make sure the pitcher pitches appropriately. So if the pitcher only pitches inside with the shift, then the batter will need to move his feet to accomodate to hit it opposite field cleanly. If you want to see opposite hitting with the shift, prepare to see a lot of shuffling in the batter's box.

Totally disagree with Rich. If you're so great a batter, which Othani is, then hit the ball where there's no coverage, is as simple as that. Hits are hits because they are hit where no one can catch it, sooooo hit it where no one can catch it. You're looking at the shift before hand, is not like they're moving while pitcher is winding up. This is a pretty bad take for a few different reasons: Managers play the shift because it works. Coaching is a huge aspect of every sport, to give you an advantage over the opposition. Why should you punish a team for being prepared? And it's not like any OTHER sport where the defensive alignment is a surprise. If Ohtani didn't want to hit the ball right into the defense, he could go the other way. Lefties change their swing to beat the shift all the time. That's just strategy. Also, if the 2nd baseman has to be near 2nd base all the time, you're going to see a lot more balls hit through a wide open right side of the infield. Ironically, the only time you ever see a defender near 2nd base is when there IS a shift. So that wasn't well thought out. Also, this is the most grumpy old man/get off my lawn take I've seen Rich.

What a dumb opinion. How about you let the managers form there defensive strategy. If you or the hitters don’t like the shift then maybe they should learn to hit the ball somewhere other than into the shift. Be a man. Go the other way. Quit overreaching and ruining the game. I don’t care if all 7 defensive players are in right field. If that’s the best defense they can muster then let it be. Figure out a way to hit it to left field.

Rich is getting his panties all in a twist with his bold proclamations but I actually prefer to watch the defense work in a hard ball game...of course you need someone to hit them the ball so they can work. To me when I watch the shift it is telling the hitters you can't hit opposite field or even straight away. If they could nobody would use the shift. If Ted Williams came to the plate and the defense played a shift he'd just lick his lips and hit a double into the huge opposite field gap. The solution is for hitters to learn how to hit, not just worry about their launch angle.

Hit it where they ain’t. That’s the saying and it’s the truth. The shift is a defensive STRATEGY. Rich just sounds old. There’s ways around the shift and to flat out beat the shift. It’s not like the spider tac at all.

Maybe if he just dinked it oppo he wins the game. If he didn’t wanna hit it into the shift, THEN HIT IT TO THIRD WHERE NOBODY FUCKING IS. He chose to play right into the very obvious defensive adjustment. Game is changing, rich. Deal with it

So he is saying he just wants guys to be place in 1 tiny box and not move from that spot. Maybe if the batters are good enough they would hit it the other way.

The fact that some infielders move into other areas of the field leave the original area open. Batters could hit the ball there. It is all part of the strategy of the game, thus all part of the game !

If an NFL offense only throws to one side of the field do you also want to not allow the defense to shift coverage to that side?

Wait, what. A defender isn't supposed to position themselves to best field the ball? I'm confused. Why is he upset? Shouldn't that be how you play? Or do you have to let the star hit over your head, for "baseball"?? Really honestly confused as to whats he doesn't like...

I would argue the batters should learn to exploit the shift. It will resolve itself if people got better at going to the opposite field.

Rich is right. As a viewer of ANY sport, you don't care about strategy/statistics/positioning. It's just not fun to watch. As an Angels fan, if I see Martinez rob Ohtani of an HR, hats off to him. That's an athletic play. I may not like it, but I respect it and APPRECIATE it. If I'm a Red Sox fan, if I see Ohtani hit a walk-off, hats off to him. I don't like it, but I appreciate the athletic feat. The only people who are happy and appreciative of seeing that shift last night are Red Sox fans. The rest of the baseball world and casual viewers everywhere are left thinking "...that's lame." It's the same w/ all sports....like I love seeing pick 6's or sacks, but you know what bores me to no end? Watching running backs getting stifled at the line over and over. Hats off to the defensive coach and the line for executing, but it's not exciting or cool to watch.
@VogonPoet67
@VogonPoet67 3 года назад
No. I'm neither a Red Sox fan nor an Angels fan, but all the crying (not you. Eisen) about the shift is silly. If everybody is shifting, Ohtani needs to learn to spread the ball around. Once he does that, he'll be even better than he already is. But as long as everyone knows where a high percentage of his hits are going, it's just whining to complain about the other team taking advantage of that knowledge.

Agree 1000% about the abomination that the shift represents. All sports promote a good measure of offense. In baseball There are too few positive outcomes. “Beer league softball game” move, definitely yes. Game has largely become game of just 3 outcomes: home run, strikeouts and walks plus a squadron of 1 inning or less mediocre no-name relief pitchers. Just a opinion of a 60 years baseball fan.
