In this video, I discuss the way minimalism is affected by mental health. Nothing too unheard of here. The title is sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious.

I recently had a bout of ultramanimalism forced on me by way of an accident. I'm a truck driver, and there was a collision that caused my truck to burn up entirely. Thankfully, it looks like the determination of the accident will be no fault on my part, and I'm still employed. But I lost 11 years of personal possessions on top of a few others that were extremely valuable to me that I'd had for much longer. It's terrible not having the resources, and I would have much preferred to decide myself what to hold on to and what to keep, but there is a blessing of being freed of so much stuff and having a chance to gain a greater perspective on what I actually need and what starts to just get in the way of the things that really matter like my ability to think clearly, act effectively, and be present for my family. Thank you as always for this channel. Even when there's not an urgent need, your content and your continued existence has helped me center myself and get back on the right track.

Steve, I’m so sorry to hear about your accident. And to know that you responded to it with such grace is inspiring. I truly admire that sort of attitude and don’t know if I’d be able to say the same in your position. I’m glad you came out of that accident safely and that you’re still here to tell us all you’ve learnt from the ordeal.

Depression doesn't just make you accumulate more things, it also makes decluttering more difficult. At least that has been my experience. I can't make any decisions, so everything ends up in the "maybe" pile. And I cling to things from my past that I realistically don't need anymore because they remind me of a time when I felt better. Thanks for talking about this, most people only mention the effects of minimalism on mental health and not the other way around.

You’re so right about that. I too struggle with being decisive on my bad days. I think if it were talked about more people who struggle would be more open to minimalism. Attracting just the “ideal-looking” crowd makes it seem unobtainable and out of reach to the regular person. I wanted to make it more relatable.

I hope you get over this period and that you are in a better place soon. For me personally, I declutter on a daily basis and I find that very beneficial, even if it's only one item, its symbolic of letting go. I also declutter on social media, for example unsubscribing from channels I no longer follow or if it brings me down. For me the act of 'letting go' is very beneficial, however small it is, but I make sure I do it daily.

I think you have a very beneficial attitude, Michael. I agree that letting go can be symbolic sometimes and your style of decluttering one thing a day sounds helpful to you. Thank you very much for your kind words. ^_^
