During the reign of Henry VIII, the notorious King wished for a son so he could carry on with the Tudor dynasty. His quest for a male heir resulted in the execution of one of his Queens, (Anne Boleyn) however Jane Seymour his third wife would give Henry his greatest gift. Edward VI was a boy when he came onto the throne, and because of this he needed a council to help him govern.
The head of this council was Edward Seymour, the Lord Protector and also Edward VI's Uncle. Edward Seymour in this role became the most powerful man in England, and the Duke of Somerset could create whatever legislation he wanted. It was Seymour who made many of the huge changes to religion under Edward VI's reign, during the English Reformation. He was incredibly powerful, and basically was acting as the King whilst Edward VI was too young.
However like many important figures in Tudor society, Edward Seymour fell from grace incredibly hard which resulted in his execution. Whilst Seymour was acting as the Lord Protector, there was great unrest across England which resulted in several rebellions and uprisings. One of these, Kett's Rebellion resulted in a group of rebels storming and taking control of Norwich. Seymour attracted a great amount of criticism for this and his enemies began to plot his downfall.
Edward Seymour was eventually accused of treason and was thrown into the Tower of London. He was then dragged out of the Tower to Tower Hill and was executed in front of a huge crowd. The Lord Protector fell from grace incredibly hard, and went the same was as many Tudor figures, at the sharp blade of the axe.
So join us today as we look at, 'The Shocking Execution of Edward Seymour - The Lord Protector.'

The Seymours are an interesting family. History remembers Jane as a stable, if somewhat boring queen who gave Henry his long awaited son. However there was ALOT of intrigue and scandal in the Seymour family. 1.)There’s rumors the patriarch committed adultery with his daughter in law. 2.) Thomas had a scandalous and VERY inappropriate relationship with Elizabeth while she was in his care and seemingly attempted to kidnap the young king (after shooting his dog) . He was then executed on his own brothers warrant. 3.) Edward died on the scaffold and in disgrace after mismanagement and gross inefficiency .
@ladyv5655
@ladyv5655 3 года назад
Thomas also secretly married Henry's widow, Katherine Parr, only a few months after the King's death. This is what gave him access to Elizabeth and made it easier for him to abuse her. After Katherine died, he plotted to marry Elizabeth.

If Jane had lived she would have ended up like Anne Boleyn as Henry would blame her for their son getting sick ad dying, Henry wasn't capable of real love for anyone not his wives or his kids I don't know if that ws due to his mother dying and maybe if she had survived maybe he would not have been that way or maybe he was always gonna be a Psychopathic Sociopath Narcissist and Maybe if Arthur had lived He and Catherie of Aragon would have possibly lived Happy ever after and if they were the ones to have Mary she would not have gone through all she did at Henry's hands. And therefore Maybe today we would not know her for the struggles and scandals and things she did and maybe she would not have the name Bloody Mary and such a brutal reputation!

@Zam Marvel I think farmers probably made out o.k., at least for a while. I mean, they produced a lot of healthy food. Henry VIII had a horrible diet of mostly meat, very few vegetables. And what a mess he was toward the end. Of course everyone was susceptible to the diseases of the time. And I think people were perhaps dirty by our standards, but I don't think they were as dirty as we've been led to believe.

@melissagibson3712

Yes and I feel the same about his sister Jane. Her brothers were greedy, ambitious and ruthless. Her father slept with his daughter in law. Edward, his son's, first wife. Why then is Jane given the benefit of the doubt? People tend to see Jane as virtuous, uneducated and somewhat of an innocent. I strongly disagree. IMO, she was a cold, ambitious b**ch who had no problem stepping over Anne's dead body to marry the king. Henry became betrothed to Jane while Anne was still bleeding. She had been a part of the court for years. She was Katherine's lady in waiting and also Anne's lady. Henry had known her and her family for years. I never understood why he suddenly became attracted to Jane. She was not at all attractive. She was pretty much illiterate and had no wit. I believe that Henry would have eventually tossed Jane aside as well. Son or no son. He called her his "true wife" because she popped out a boy. Jane died before Henry could get tired of her.

You forget that Thomas was just as bad as he was. A power-hungry paedophile who had his eye on the then Princess Elizabeth while Catherine Parr (married Thomas after Henry died) was still alive at that point.
@janicem9225
@janicem9225 2 года назад
@@melissagibson3712 NONE of the wives except Katharine of Aragon, and Anne of Cleves are really worthy of sympathy, because only those two were really treated badly, and didn't ask for their terrible situations. I especially feel bad for Katherine, because she was treated the worst of all, and her ill treatment lasted for years before her death. Anne Boleyn deserved EVERYTHING she got in the end, as did her cousin, Katherine Howard...they were both adulteresses, and destroyed the lives of others, though I believe Anne was the worst, because of the thousands of innocent lives destroyed by her, and her treatment of Katherine and Mary, during Anne's affair and then marriage to Henry. And Anne of Cleves was the only one smart enough to give Henry an annulment without a fight, and survived all his other wives, even living comfortably for the rest of her life.
@melissagibson3712
@melissagibson3712 2 года назад
@@janicem9225 I absolutely agree with you about Anne of Cleves. She was my favorite and by far the most sensible. I believe Catherine Parr to be a good and decent lady as well. Katherine Howard was young and stupid. She paid for it. Catherine of Aragon may have been a good wife and did not deserve the treatment she received, but IMO, she was not a good mother. Had she not stood on her pride and dragged out her annulment, her daughter may have had a happier existence. Mary was punished and treated horribly because of her mother's pride. Not to mention poor Bishop Fisher who lost his head in defense of Katherine. She did not flinch at the pain and sorrow that was inflicted on others because of her. She was selfish. Being Queen of England was more important to her than anything else. She was no saint. Anne of Cleves had no agenda going into her marriage. She had nothing to lose and everything to gain by being agreeable. Smart lady.

The Cornish did not want the English language in their home which it would have been in the new Common Book of Prayer. If they even understood Latin it was not seen as a threat to their culture like English was. Remember Cornwall was still a Duchy not quiet under the English thumb as counties were. Cornwall would not become properly under the monarch’s until the English illegally annexed it and Cornwall would not become a county (unconstitutionally) until 1888.

This seems to be the running theme through the 16th and 17th century England and Scotland. I can't really call it the UK yet because of the act of Union binding England completely absorbed Scotland , Wales and Ireland until the 1700s right? So did the English just mess with the Scots and the Irish at this time? Did they meddle in their politics? What with all the executions and imprisonment along with elevation of certain individuals to power it just seems like there's an over abundance of intrigue. Movie producers couldn't write a betterscript.

At least both Henry VIII and Edward VI are protestant and kept out of the rule of the papacy. Bit like brexit really better out than in

My Y chromosome is an exact match to the Seymour's. Edward is very possibly a long ago relative on my father's side. We still have the Herbert surname and this goes back to documented relatives living in Raglan Castle region, especially Penallt village about 10 miles from Raglan. I love how Edward actually stood with the common people against greedy landowners who had partitioned off what had been common grazing land, their actions had sent millions into poverty and even starvation. After Kett's rebellion it was just a matter of time before he was smeared with trumped up charges and executed himself.

He married Henry’s widow secretly after only a few months of mourning He seduced the king sister Elizabeth, who was 14, taking silly liberties and causing scandal He plotted to take his brother’s place as protector of the young king and more. .. He was impudent and silly that’s why he lost his head

My family is connected to several Royal houses but it's no reason to boast, remember that was our Ancestors not us, they were royalty or part of the nobility, we're not! It annoys the living daylights out of me, my sister (RIP) was the biggest snob about it, name dropping and trying to act superior all the time. All the "my ancestor is......" bulldust means nothing these days - if anyone digs deep enough you'll find at least one "important" person on their family tree, I actively chose to pull away from the "us and them" I'm merely an ordinary person with some out of the ordinary forebears.

@@alisonholland7531 You are totally incorrect about Genealogy... Your over simplification is problematic as you seem to dumb your videos down... this leads to misunderstandings of the facts and how they all interplayed with one another is paramount to understanding Tudor history... Edward was not made king purely because he was a male.. there was much more at work.... I’d like to see an actual academic take on things from yourself
