This is Kacee's first time watching reaction to the movie Drive (2011). Driver is a skilled Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. Though he projects an icy exterior, lately he's been warming up to a pretty neighbor named Irene and her young son, Benicio. When Irene's husband gets out of jail, he enlists Driver's help in a million-dollar heist. The job goes horribly wrong, and Driver must risk his life to protect Irene and Benicio from the vengeful masterminds behind the robbery.

This is actually the first movie I recall where the soundtrack strongly influenced my viewing. I'm not even huge on synthwave usually but I remember watching this in theaters and just being blown away by how the music impacted the movie, so much so that I went back like a week later and watched it again. One of only two or three movies I've watched twice at the theaters, lol.

Brian Cranston said in an interview that he was the one that came up with how he died. He thought that the handshake would be such a perfect doublecross. A handshake is known as a sign that you don't have a weapon in your hand and can be trusted. Using that moment of trust to kill Shannon really showed us what Rose was capable of.

Anthony's on spot with the "feels artsy" comment. It's categorized as "arthouse action". Fun little nugget: a woman sued the producers of this film because she thought she was getting a Fast & Furious type of movie, from the trailers. And when it turned out to be an artsy, slow burn type of movie, she felt hoodwinked. The case was thrown out lmao 😂
@habadasheryjones
@habadasheryjones Год назад
I'm glad the judge threw that case out. People need to learn that trailers are made by marketing teams separate from the people who produced the films and doing some quick cursory research separate from that marketing campaign is essential these days. That woman could have done a google search and looked up the director's work or a review or something to indicate Drive leaned closer to a slow burn arthouse film with pockets of action than a film where cgi cars defy gravity for 2 hours straight.

The Scorpion And The Frog. "It's my nature," the Scorpion said. He was decent in Fracture too! A lot of people gloss over the parking scene. While not taking his eyes off the guys beating the jailbird, he parked his car. Simple but shows his skills. My favourite scene was the elevator stomp! At the end he was standing covered in blood under red light (possibly representing hell) and her standing under the blue light. Cool!

One of the unwritten rules in Hollywood is that they do not show scenes where women get shot in the head. They did in this film, so either it's not a Hollywood movie (an European one?), or they wanted to really continue to juxtapose the tenderness and the abrupt violence just a little bit more. Not unlike stomping a guy's head in after having your first kiss with your crush.

The soundtrack for this movie is great for a night cruise. Every now and then I’ll load my dogs up in the car at around 8:30-9pm and grab some snacks and a few drinks and I’ll pick a spot about an hour away that I’ve never been to and I’ll just drive out there. I always take back roads and stuff and it’s such a relaxing thing for me. Once I get to my destination I’ll usually just drive around at random before eventually heading back home by taking a completely different route of back roads. This soundtrack is great for something like that imo. About the movie itself, I saw it in theaters, went in completely blind, and loved it. But, it’s not super popular or well known. I think it’s one of Ryan Gosling’s best roles despite his limited speaking lines. I’m glad this excellent film is getting more attention nowadays, along with its soundtrack since it plays such an important role in the conveyance of emotion throughout the movie. Great reaction!

The message behind the scorpion and the frog fable is that scorpions can't change who they are and fight against their own nature, as hard as they may try. This is what defines the Driver's character, hence why he wears a scorpion jacket and asks Rose if he knows about that fable.

This movie is truly a masterpiece. The director can get pretty experimental, and it can be hit-or-miss (he has another one also staring Ryan Gosling, that is personally a miss for me), but this one is amazing. Art house with heavy car chase suspense and shockingly graphic violence, but at the heart an amazing romance that develops, as you've said, with little dialogue. One of my favorites of all time.

Great reaction and always though their were clear parallels between Driver/Shannon and Bernie/Nino. Shannon and Nino are both boisterous, fast talking and seemingly the “boss” in their partnerships; it soon become clear both men are in over their heads and not cut out for their line of work (Shannon would have eventually ran afoul of Bernie and Nino and wound up dead; likewise Nino would have been killed by the East Cost Mob someday if the Driver hadn’t already done the deed). On the other end, the Driver and Bernie are the more laconic/stoic men in their partnerships, but both fit the bill of “beware the quiet ones”; they also have an inherently creepy quality to them that makes them more dangerous than their partners (despite his soft spot for Irene and her son, the Driver has this well of violence inside him that’s pretty disturbing when it’s full unleashed; likewise Bernie is the one to ultimately “take care of business” when Nino screws up).

Also they don't "roll" crash the cars, they use physics/math and pistons and/or gas canisters to flip cars in a certain way. CG is used, "hopefully" to edit out the practical toys. Looking at you Gladiator, so many shots where you can see them on the carriages in the Colosseum. Sad ;)

when you guys were musing about stunt drivers....90 percent of car stunts back in the day were practical no CGI, lke 60's 70's 80's era, maybe green screens and such. But with computer graphics really cut it down which is safer, But some directors will pay the extra now to have amazing drivers put their lives on the line for the realism. Normally they are planned planned planned though. And the drivers know how to protect themselves and how to reinforce the vehicles to protect themselves even more. But takes a special kind of performer to think "Wounds Heal, Chicks dig scars, but Glory is forever"...lol

This movie is weird about the time it's set in. It all looks and feels like it should be a story from the 80s, but lots of props are clearly from the 2000s.

"Drive" is the first novel in a series. So, make of that what you will.

You should watch Place Beyond the Pines. Its an even better serious movie with Ryan Gosling

9:44, some rather nice framing by the cinematographer. Now they just need to watch The Place Beyond the Pines and Only God Forgives to complete the violently intense criminal Ryan Gosling trilogy.

Thanks for reacting to this great movie. Not a lot of people react to it even though I have suggested it many times. You should check out 'Baby Driver' which has similar plot points and an incredible soundtrack to go with it. Overall I'd say 'Drive' is the better movie but I think you would enjoy 'Baby Driver'.

"Every Frame A Painting" did an excellent breakdown of why the visuals are so good in this movie: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wsI8UES59TM.html
