He’s the guy who would give up anything for love-even his own self-worth. The simp, defined as a lovelorn and overly attentive guy, is someone that no one wants to be. Yet by taking a closer look at how the simp approaches love, we can unpack some warnings about our own relationships-as well as some advice. Here’s our Take on how the simp might be setting himself up for failure, and what we can learn from his positive qualities so that we can all be better at love -- whether it’s returned or not.

@@viharsarok My own experience can counter this. I spent a year in heartbreak because I believed if a man was interested, he'd probably confess first. Turns out we were both interested in each other, but past relationships discouraged him from seeking any more, and I didn't want to pursue him out of fear of making him uncomfortable (as people had done that to me in the past) nor lose the chances I had to talk to him without things becoming awkward (which I realize now to be a very unhealthy mentality). Thanks to a mutual friend who talked to both of us privately about it, we managed to get our feelings out in the open and make things work. Perhaps that's how it's been with some, but definitely not all. Making assumptions about how others feel, even those we consider close to us, can hurt them. There are a scary number of people who've believed others were in love with them, or could fall in love with them if they used the right tactics, and have instead harassed them unknowingly.

I don't like these absolutely meaningless labels, but yeah, most often for most normal people "simp" is not a trait of character but a label that is limited to a precise context. I see such "simpy" behavior as a credit undeservedly gifted to the other as a positive basis for a potential relationship. We all have different personalities in different situations. You are not the same person at your job than you are at home or in some other place. Giving someone a very positive place from the get go in your interaction, gives them a positive role to instinctively adapt their personality to and with time to grow into making it their normal, thus becoming a better happier person in a long run. In other terms a positive perspective on you and a positive role given to you will not only validate and encourage you in the immediate but also stimulate your growth and happiness as a person in the long run. By contrast someone demanding, who has a critical and judgmental attitude and makes you feel on a constant toxic trial of either achieve this, be pretty, be this or that or become worthless to me and lose everything, will put your spirit down, will in a long run simply depress you, lower your self esteem and push you down into stagnation or decadence. It is wrong to think that someone has low self esteem just because he gifts you high credit. Neither does it mean that he doesn't see your other reality, hence the term "gift". In overall, I'd say that any simplistic label such as "simp", is solely based on a simplistic superficial external analysis of the situation that can cover many deeply different realities that in essence can go from crazy psycho stalker to smart relationship building. "“In the end, it is impossible not to become what others believe you are.” so let's believe in the best in each other :)

Best simp summary ever, from Morty to Jessica: “You don't miss me, you just miss the me that loved you so much you didn't have to love me back”
@haley5735
@haley5735 3 года назад
I'm not entirely sure that quote highlights the whole idea of a simp though. Many times a simp is just a 'nice guy' who wants sex or a relationship and expects it because he is nice. So that quote works as long as you consider that the guy saying it is trying to say that he's not getting what he wants and therefore will stop caring about her.
@jerrysstories711
@jerrysstories711 3 года назад
@@haley5735 Morty is definitely a simp, totally and unwisely devoted to Jessica, but I wouldn't say he's the Nice Guy (tm) because he never gets angry at her for not meeting his expectations. However in the episode I quoted, Morty has a temporary bout of extreme clarity and self-awareness (brought about by some brain tech). He realizes suddenly what he's been doing and quits doing it. When the effects pass, he reverts to being pretty much the same simp as before. But yeah, the quote reflects the awareness that the typical simp lacks, and he says it in response to Jessica saying she misses him.

@Puerco-Potter 3 года назад
@@haley5735 I think the problem is that the line is kind of blurry in the nice guy/honest guy fenomena, IMO telling a girl you are not getting what you seek out of a relationship and opting out is mature behavior as long as you don't berate her or call her names. You present your feelings, wait for an answer and react accordingly, there is a lot of people, as the nice guy is not entitled to a relationship, the woman is not entitled to a friendship.
@davidegaruti2582
@davidegaruti2582 3 года назад
@@haley5735 ok , i think we need to define the term : a simp doesn't lowers guilt on the woman he simps for , he endures and endures a lot ending up in emberassing situations ... a nice guy on the other hand will call a woman a bitch and guilt her for not sleeping with him afther "courting" ... in short : the simp is locking itself in the room with you , while you get locked in the same room with the nice guy ...
@haley5735
@haley5735 3 года назад
@@davidegaruti2582 That definition is very well-thought out and it makes sense. However, there are many definitions of a what it means to be a simp on the Internet, and I follow a different definition than that. Many times, a simp is ostracized by their (usually male) friends and not by the girl, so yes, there would be no need for them to make her feel guilty for their own actions and the action of their friends. So generally, when the simp says 'please do this, please notice me' or whatever embarrassing thing they choose to do, it is going out of his way to bother the woman for something. That is the intersection, I believe, because simps can sometime harass women in the name of affection.

So surprised to see Ben Wyatt included here, he is one of the best representations of a supportive and loving partner on TV, and it’s completely reciprocated. He and Leslie are a power couple. Also, Ben stands his ground with her many times, including the introduction of his character as one of the state auditors, Leslie calls him “mean Ben” for just doing his job. Then after they split up to avoid a scandal during Leslie’s campaign, he stands his ground about not being able to spend time with Leslie while she keeps trying to find new projects for the two of the them (Chris’s ‘dynamic duo’) to keep working on just to spend more time with him even though they’ve broken up. Ben is so far from a simp.

A simp doesn't retain the nice qualities of being a simp, but rather he transforms into what's know as being a "gentleman" who knows how to treat women nicely and with respect. A good example of what this video could have used of what a simp could aspire to would be a character like Marshal from HIMYM. On the surface you could see some of his behaviour as simping for Lilly, but it's not true. Sure he loves brunch, making sappy love songs for his wife, going to musicals and likes being romantic, but he's so secure in his manhood that he never get's bothered by anyone who would make fun of him about it. Marshal is able to achieve this because he's such a multifaceted man which is what gives him self confidence and self respect. He can play piano, he's athletic (was a slam dunk champion in high school), he's a lawyer and he cares about the environment. He's also in every respect of the word a Gentleman when it comes to women. Sure he high fives his buddies when they get laid, but deep down he's a relationship guy who cares deeply for his wife. Put this all together and he's a guy who actually has something to offer women, unlike his simp counterpart in Ted who, while being an architect (which is interesting) doesn't have much else going for him aside from being a hopeless romantic. Most of the simps in this video don't have much going for them aside for their love to whichever women they pine after.

My problem with this term. Is the simp only treat women with kindness. Making women look like special little kinds. Why don't these men show this same exact kindness to other men? The simp opens the door for that pretty girl because you just wanna smash or be in a relationship I don't know. But the simp wouldn't the door for men or unattractive women. The problem I have with these men is their kindness is usually one-sided and usually has an agenda behind it. They would be indifferent or mean towards men and unattractive women. But automatically change to a super simp once a pretty woman walks into the room. Who is a complete stranger they don't know? Any treat her like a princess. You shouldn't give the bare minimum of kindness or more to just one particular hot woman stranger. You give the bare minimum of kindness to everybody. Open the door everybody. Don't have a fake nice guy motive for opening the door. Be nice to everybody, not just attractive women.
@athletescollective4214
@athletescollective4214 3 года назад
@@markstriker925 Agreed with all of this, especially the part about how they become super simps when an attractive woman walks in and treating her like a princess. I'd say they're nice to hot women mostly because they want to smash and not because they want to be in a relationship. They pine after these women and put them on a pedestal because they think it's the only way to get that kind of woman to like them. Also because those kinds of woman aren't usually attracted to simps.

Speaking of 'simp,' when I was growing up, my mother was telling me how we should not be overly cruel to men who are 'simps.' Because she said if you kept being overtly mean, you may end up with the 'simp.' And this actually came true. In HS, there was this boy who's thoroughly a 'simp' for my friend. He would just follow her around like a puppy and be super-duper accomodating/nice toward her, and she didn't like him that way, very openly refused him. She told everyone how she thought he was not attractive to her and she was very clear that she didn't like him. But he didn't give up. He was that person who just latched on and wouldn't let go. He even applied and got accepted to the same university as she did (which was a tad odd because her parents sent her to study abroad and he got so many options but he chose her university choice). Guess what, to everyone's shock, she actually got married to him, around ten years after we all graduated HS. They're still married now, they have 2 kids. Now they kind of rewrote their story, she would tell people (who don't know) that they were best friends from HS, which was totally so far from the truth.

I think the biggest female simps have to be Sakura and Hinata from Naruto. It's surprising and sad that these two characters are from the same series, but I think it speaks volumes about how female characters are perceived in shonen manga/anime. The idea that women should pine over a guy without asking anything in return or lose any ounce of self-respect even after that the male characters tried to killed and any interaction she has had with them was deeming and humiliating . Even though Naruto was never malicious in ignoring Hinata's feelings the fact that she pines for him for a year, she should realized he looks at as a friend and nothing and being okay with that (the fact that their "romance" had to happen in a movie long after the series ended really just effort cash in on the popularity of the manga and the fact that Naruto needed to be hallucinating to realized Hinata's feelings and reciprocating, is laughable). I'm sorry but how exactly is Ben Wyatt a simp??!! His feelings were entirely reciprocated by Leslie!! I understand how they explained he's a healthy version of the simp, but roughly speaking, a simp is someone whose feelings are not reciprocated. Also, he would've been a simp if he had been doing all that stuff for her *before* they started even dating. However he makes all those big gestures for Leslie after they are together and continues when they are married. To lovingly dote on one's partner is *NOT* simp like behaviour.

I dont think that Gatsby is a SIMP too. I think the self-humiliation part of doing anything to get the women is they key in what defines a "SIMP". Gatsby did the exact opposite, he worked on himself, became a war hero, became a millionaire to "raise himself up" to the level of Daisy. While SIMPs always degrade themselves. Or you think I'm wrong? I think its terrible when you label and degrade every single man that goes out of his way for a woman a SIMP. This just creates a sad and hostile environment between men and women...

Unpopular opinion, I never liked this term. SIMP went from "guy who obsesses over girl" to "if you think women deserves rights," has a loving relationship with a girlfriend, or defends someone if a different gender, you're a simp. The problem and solution is simple in both romantic and platonic relationships, treat each other as human beings who care each other. Listen, communicate, get out of your head, talk about boundaries, be confidence and not obsessive, get advice from family and friends who genuinely have your best interest at hand instead of the wannabe gangbangers and toxic douchebags in your locker room, and don't treat people as an object for an affection, show kindness and genuine respect. Also, just avoid being an incel in general because the two have a scary correlation. Don't say you wanna love or be friends with someone and then talk about them like shit the moment they do something you don't like. Neither women or men (or trans / non binary people) are sexual items that exist to satey our lust. Lust can come with love, but love should be what people seek more of, and it doesn't always have to be romantic. That's just me though.
@orionaugustwatson
@orionaugustwatson 3 года назад
You aren't alone mate I hate the degradation of the this and many terms to derogatory status with/without context. Also personally, the very concept of owing something for decent human behaviour is as far from love as it can. Love isn't a trade , love is a verb, and mutual respect (without losing self respect or being arrogant, entitled) is I think the most significant part of any relationship,romantic, familial, friendly or otherwise

A simp often doesn't think about the woman as a real person. It's the idea of her. And they usually don't shoot their shot. Like Gunther, who barely really knows or talks to Rachel meaningfully, vs Ross who loves her actually and goes for it. I think there's something truly sweet about a very caring man, but you have to go for it. I've dealt with a couple of these guys and most of the time women are aware of their feelings. I've talked about seeing other people to gently get them to take a soft rejection and move on since they'll never actually tell you they have feelings but it just makes them resentful I've found. Idk man. I'm married to someone that is called a simp by his friends but at the end of the day, we have a really healthy, caring, and compassionate relationship and we can connect deeper because he's not afraid to be emotional or caring or supportive. It's really sad guys are being looked down on and called simps for doing anything and everything these days. If you want a successful emotional connection, you have to be emotional. And, I don't pine for fictional people like my friends that married emotionally unavailable men. 👀🍵🫖

But that doesn't help them because the girls know that they don't care about being with them as a person but that they just want to be with someone, it doesn't matter who. And that's not how a relationship works.

So... Obviously it's unhealthy for ANYBODY to be throwing away their self-worth and doing whatever somebody else wants to win scraps of their attention. I'm not arguing against that premise. The thing that bothers me about the term 'simp' is that it's exclusively used to describe men. There's two implications there, both of which are harmful. The fact that the term is NEVER APPLOED TO WOMEN implies that this is a healthy or expected behaviour for women to have - that they'll throw themselves at people and ignore their self-worth because they're desperate to be loved. That seems like a harmful stereotype. The fact that the term is ONLY APPLIED TO MEN suggests that it's demeaning for a guy to sacrifice any of his self-worth in the pursuit of a woman. The implication being that men should always hold the cards, women should be throwing themselves at him, and if he has to pursue them or sacrifice any of his independence to try to get a woman then he's pathetic, for putting his wishes second to hers. There's an expectation that men should be in control and women should be the ones putting themselves second in the relationship. So I agree that a person should never throw away their self-respect in pursuit of someone else; but I think that applying the term only to men has sexist connotations!

Many movies and TV show’s portrayals are dangerous because of their inaccuracies. Many projects also don’t seem to have any consultants to help get the portrayal right, not to mention the fact that the actors/actresses cast do not have any experience with and/or are not diagnosed with the disorder themselves (ex: Sia’s new movie is a bout a girl with autism but the actress playing her does not have autism). In my mind a simp is not a guy who is in touch with his emotions. A simp is either a mascochist, or an obsessive guy with low selfworth who throw his love at every girl who’s nice to him. It’s an evil circel, they easily get hurt, disapointed and used. They need to work on themselves and learn, they are enough. I have experienced a couple of simps in my life and they were all very insecure. I was nice to them, and tried befriending them, but they never lost hope, even though I told them multiple times I wasn’t interested, so I had to cut them off in the end.
