Pretty sure is not a random joke, this episode was release in 1997 and Matt Groening and David X Cohen were already concepting and developing Futurama.

This episode was created in response to some FOX executives suggesting/demanding that new character would be added to Simpsons household. Taking this in mind it was obvious they intended Poochie to be horrible but I like thinking how to fix things like that. Barring from not adding Poochie in the first place I'd personally make him kind of recurring side character who helps set up, amplify and/or lampshade various antics that Itchy and Scratchy get into. First Poochie episode was basically setting premise that the main duo is going to Fireworks Factory and then betraying that promise by instead dedicating half the episode to let Poochie tell how awesome he is. He could be worker at the Fireworks Factory explaining how the factory works and emphasizing how some stuff is especially dangerous, setting up said stuff being used to blow the cat up in smithereens and Poochie ending the episode with something like "Oh boy I'm in trouble now"

They didn't 'predict' anything. They were trying to let us down easy. It's too bad nearly none of us picked up on that.

they did. Network pressures were already hitting them at the time. Fox executives suggested they add a new character to the show, and that's the reason this episode was made. Notice how this episode also awkwardly inserts the character 'Roy' who _suspiciously has a lot in common_ with Poochie. At the time, the writers thought the show was going to be going off the air in a few seasons tops. They put out Behind The Laughter only three years after this, and they figured it was going to be the series' swan song. Fox kept the show alive. Executives are the reason for zombie Simpsons, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

@@SavageGreywolf Yeah, and near the end of the Season they directly make fun of Fox executives. In The Simpsons Clip Show the premise is that Fox executives are bugging the writers of the show to write spinoffs of The Simpsons to get more viewers in and to fill in time spots. They even make fun of how they are running out of ideas themselves at the end of the episode.

The whole episode did. The show started getting competition and losing ratings, so the creative team tried to appeal to new tastes and hype up new gimmicks which they had absolutely no passion and understanding of, leading to the show getting blander and disjointed, and alienating what original audience left was still watching.

Basically every successful kid's show made in the last decade, really.

+Jazzcat135 *Nah the writing got really bad rather than people got sick of the characters.* Actually the characters have been around for so long that they ran out of stories to tell with them so they kept changing the characters to make it possible but then they ended up not being the characters we loved. Its like that episode with Armin Tamzarian. They knew it was shit because they had that meta fiction shit at the end where the Judge declares it illegal to acknowledge the story in the episode happened. Its what happens when shows stay on the air for too long. Its why Soap Operas are awful and the characters that have been around forever have all been married 4 times and been accused of murder a half dozen times. Also yes the writing also got really bad but the original two sets of writers (about 4 seasons each for the first 8 seasons) were so great it was bound to happen.
