I remember dancing to this in our local punk club, back in the 80s. Used to take me over two hours to get ready for the night. Hard rock hairspray on my long black crimped and back combed hair, purple lippy, heavy black eyeliner/eyeshadow, black painted fingernails and a lace outfit I knocked up on the sewing machine. Aah those were the days. 😍🤩Xx
Girl, you are making me reminisce. Did the same in England and America. And I actually met Andrew Eldritch in the strangest way. Only good things to say.
I had the VHS of this back in the 90s and used to wait until my parents went to bed, light a doob, relax with the Sisters of Mercy. This track always stood out to me, especially that scream at the end.
My teenage dream CAME true as I gave the lighter to Andrews cigarette in 1989 in Berlin. After that I saw Sisters 3 more times and it was always really stunning!
Hussey, Adams and Eldritch - love those witchfinder hats and Hussey's black poncho, goth as fuck. Love this live version, such a good rendition. Classic Sisters line-up, the best IMO.
I think that they were better with Gary Marx who had left prior to this show, but I agree that the "First, Last, and Always" rendition of Sisters was their peak. Boy do I envy you getting to see this gig.
My favourite Sisters song. I still remember the excitement of dancing to this the first time I went to a goth club in the ‘80s. This Wake concert is amazing, especially when you realise they were a 4 piece until immediately before this performance, so Wayne and Craig had to carry the whole gig at the last minute. If there was one gig I could’ve been at in my entire life, it was this one. Unfortunately I was 16, poor and on the other side of the world. Sisters changed my life.
1980-1985. Meilleure période de Sisters of mercy.
Eternamente The Sister of Mercy... Saludos desde Lima, Perú.
Whenever I watch videos from this concert, or Bauhaus live, and of course Joy Division, I always think of something Malcolm McLaren once said. He thought it was part of the nature of English (or was it British?) bands to "take a story and step out with it." So many British bands I've watched over the years could create such compelling drama when playing live. Images you never, ever forget. I'm trying to think of some American bands that could do this. I'm not talking about rock bombast, but visually stunning drama. Maybe Suicide? The Cars? Some of the live Stooges tapes I've seen fit the bill.
Interesting , the words of their music has more meaning now. Its very difficult for bands to create an overall feeling of society today, as there are too many restrictions. There was something mystic yet magical about dancing to Goth in the 80s that cannot be captured these days. I do think bands are more cautious and restricted these days which is sad .
+wulfe Argent Cool. I didn't even realise Sisters were touring recently until I saw your comment. But I checked and there was nothing in the UK anyway. Last time I (half-) saw Andrew perform was in 2011 in Leeds.
sometimes I say I should have been born 10 yrs earlier but I'm actually glad I grew up in the 90s because I got to hear all if the good bands in that decade plus all of the good stuff before hand without sacrifiing time...I actually had some bozo say greater van fleet was better than led Zeppelin lol O.o
Had a suede ticket for total Albert it went home from promotion work for automatic two albertgreat gigs siouxsie Sioux and the sisters I think Andrews meglamanic is sonnhelnstrahl und die Licht strahlen sunbeam and the light rays fave mannerism and therein their songs 😄😄
A combo of pain meds, from cracked ribs, from a pounding by an irate boyfriend of a girl, Eldritch alleged copped off with, and speed. So a usual day at the park for Von...
She stands pressed against the wall So she can see the door In case the laughing strangers crawl and Crush the petals on the floor Alice in the party dress She thanks you kindly So serene She needs you like she needs her tranqs To tell her that the world is clean to Promise her a definition Tell her where the rain will fall Tell her where the sun shines bright And tell her she can have it all Today Today Pass the crystal spread the Tarot In illusion comfort lies The safest way the straight and narrow No confusion no surprise Alice in her party dressed to kill She the thanks you turns away Needs you like she needs her pills To tell her that the world's okay to Promise her a definition Tell her where the rain will fall Tell her where the sun shines bright And tell her she can have it all Today Today Alice Don't give it away Nooooo
and Andrew Eldritch CLAIMS he was "never Goth" and the band "Is not a Goth Band" LOL *smh* this performance of Alice sure seems to help show many of their songs and performances were pretty "gothy" back in the early 80's to '85 . . . .
A classic case of right time, right place. If Eldritch was to recreate his persona in the frozen isle of Morrisons, Id chastise him for opening all the doors, just to recreate his cold and lonely atmosphere. It's not all about you mate, there's a cost of living crisis going on.
