I enjoyed talking shop and trading war stories with SJ crew as we whisked along from Stockholm to Copenhagen in 2012. In fact I rode in the bistro car for the entire 5 hour trip! We learned Amtrak and SJ are more similar than different and I shared my experience working the X2000 in the early 90's when Amtrak was testing different European models on the Northeast Corridor before ordering high speed trains. On American rails, the X2000 rode very rough with violent side sways which threw passengers and crew all over the place while the Swedish ride was superb.

Welcome to Gothenburg, I know it well. Excellent tram system. Good video Dylan. Your 2 stops are the only places of any size on that line. Some trains are non-stop. Your fare was pretty reasonable. In many ways Sweden not so expensive as most people assume. Now Norway……

Absolutely wonderful video...and it makes me sick. We tested the X2000 almost 30 years ago in the United States but instead went with a low bidder that is now in the process of being replaced. Meanwhile the X2000's have been rebuilt, replacing the original GTOs with IGBTs, and will be in service perhaps until the middle of next decade.

Hello Dylan. You could get a 24h pass for a cost of 165 kr ($17, €15, £12.50), or a 72h pass for 330 kr ($34, €30, £25), depending on your stay in Stockholm. If just passing through, a single ticket is a better option, and the most common one is, as another viewer mentioned, the one for 39 kr to be used instantly. There is one for 54 kr, that has a end use date, if you are unsure when you'll travel. All tickets are valid on metro, bus, boat, commutertrain or tram, if I'm not entirely wrong.
@per-olamjomark7452
@per-olamjomark7452 2 года назад
Thank you for posting! Agreed that a one-way ticket on the subway or the commuter trains can be a tad pricy. But the default fare today is SEK 38. That translates to roughly GBP 3, USD 4, or EUR 4. Also, SJ has dynamic pricing which means that you can pay both more and less than you did for a ticket on this stretch.
@eoinmcgregor3102

its also not a 1 way ticket, its a ticket that gives like 90 mins of travel time so you can get a lot out of it..

Fun fact about the X2000: one set ran for many years between Hong Kong and Guangzhou and one set (I believe the same set) was sent to the United States as a high speed technology demonstrator.
@carlkolthoff5402
@carlkolthoff5402 2 года назад
Not the same set. X2013 was the one in the U.S (theres still an Amtrak "memorial" plate above the drivers door). The one that went to China was the 44th and last one they built, rebranded X2088 due to the chinese not liking the number 4. It did have some differences, such as double instead of single AC-units on every car. The chinese had taken it out of service, so SJ bought the set in 2012 and re-imported it to Sweden. Those cars have now been converted to same interior and technical specifications as the rest of the Swedish fleet and are in use today.

Nope, domestic flights aren't banned, and fares aren't capped. But the trains are good competitors (sometimes very good) with airlines for traveling in the southernmost, populated, part of the country. There are a couple of different train companies, with different fares and comfort levels. SJ, who runs this train, uses adaptive pricing, just like all domestic airlines. So depending on day and time, and on how long in advance you are booking, you might find both airline tickets that are more and less expensive than train tickets.

Great review! Fun fact: In 1995, the New South Wales railway operator in Australia, Countrylink, trialled three X2000 tilt train cars and an engine from Swedish State Railways (SJ) for testing and public service trials to determine their suitability for use in New South Wales and for interstate services. After a statewide tour in March, they were used to run the Sydney to Canberra Capital Connect service from 23 April until 18 June 1995 with modified XPT (Basically an Australian HST train which are still in service today after 39 years of service!) power cars XP2000 and XP2009.

3 hours from Stockholm to Gothenburg? The distance is almost exactly 300 miles, i.e. an average speed of 100 miles/hour. That's brilliant, especially for a pendolino. The German ICEs, which are "genuine" high-speed trains, often have an average commercial speed that's hardly above 100 km/h (65 miles/hour).
@dosvidanyagaming4123

Because it isn't a Pendolino. It's a tilting train, but it's fully Swedish designed and built.
@yagi3925
@yagi3925 2 года назад
@@dosvidanyagaming4123 Yes, it's Swedish design and manufacturing but it depends how you understand "pendolino". To me, this word refers to any kind of tilting train, not necessarily to the Italian type - that's why I called the X2000 a pendolino. The "dispute" is about what the word "pendolino" exactly refers to but we agree that the X2000 is Swedish designed and manufactured. Alright 🙂
@luciliocogato9746
@luciliocogato9746 2 года назад
@@dosvidanyagaming4123In fact, original "Pendolinos", "fully Italian designed and built tiling trains", developed in 1970s, were much faster than X2000. Anyway, average speed depends on infrastructure and on number of stops much more than on rolling stock performance.

As already mentioned by others: all X2000 train sets are about to be extensively upgraded with new interior etc. The first upgraded train has just entered regular service, and all X2000 train sets will be upgraded in around 3-4 years according to SJ. The upgrade is however delayed by several years already. In other news, SJ recently announced that they will invest in a completely new fleet of high speed trains that can do up to 250 kph, to enter service around 2026. Today no trains in Sweden operate at over 200 kph but some train lines are built for 250 kph and some others are considered for upgrades to facilitate higher speeds. The planning of a completely new high speed rail network is yet another story.

I have taken the trip from Stockholm to Copenhagen several times on both the SJ X2000 and on the competitor, Snälltåget. I prefer Snälltåget. Not for comfort but for the old-fashioned style of the carriage and in particular the restaurant carriage. You get to sit down at a real table with a real white cloth, a little lamp, and your get to eat with real cutlery.

Very nice video. As a Swede I’m proud of the Swedish Railway and SJ. The ticket prices are really good, the earlier you buy your ticket, the cheaper it is. Tickets start at around 200SEK. Compared to flying to Gothenburg, the train is very cheap and still gets you to your destination just as fast (if you account for the time it takes you to get to and from the airport). As you said the X2000 are being refurbished and upgraded and the first of these trains is already running on the Stockholm- Gothenburg line. Make sure to travel on it! Some more interesting information is that SJ just signed a deal with Bombardier for some +20 new high speed trains capable of 250km/h which will be the fastest train in Sweden. These trains are scheduled for 2026. They will not replace the X2000 but run side by side. Last but not least Sweden is in the planing stage for completely new high speed corridors between Stockholm-Gothenburg and Stockholm-Malmö which will increase capacity, enable higher speeds, up to 250km/h (today 200km/h) and therefor cut travel time. Thanks for a great video on our great, but old railway system. Take care!
@HowDoYouEatPie
@HowDoYouEatPie 2 года назад
As someone who has spent the better part of 5 years commuting daily by train, traveling some 1000 km per week, pride and Swedish railways are, regrettably, two things that I seldomly associate. Swedish long distance trains are among the least punctual in all of europe and the largest contributor to the delays are problems with the infrastructure. The railway network have suffered from a lack of investment and inadequate maintenance for decades during a time when passenger rail traffic has increased drastically. As a result, several sections are running at max capacity (such as parts of the route between Stockholm and Gothenburg) and there are frequent problems with broken switches, signals and the electrical supply, etc. This is something that is acknowledged by most of the political parties, government agencies and operators alike (with SJ often complaining about the poor state of the railway infrastructure) and most agree that improvements are necessary. Personally I want to be able to feel proud about our national railways, but being proud about something that is, frankly, subpar is just going to hinder progress. I prefer that we complain and criticise until sufficient improvements will make it right to actually be proud.

Many years ago (last Century, in fact - February to June 1995) New South Wales dabbled with trialling a few carriages from this fleet on the Sydney - Canberra route. While I didn't travel on the service, I was able to see through the carriages at the Maintenance Centre and was very impressed. Your journey has reminded me of the experience and, while this is an unrefurbished set, I immediately recognised features I had seen. Unfortunately, as is the case with so many experiments in Australia, no capital investment was made on this brand of equipment and the three carriages returned to Sweden. I took a regional train to Vasteras while in Sweden just before the pandemic and the difference in price between 1st and 2nd class was also very minimal - I think around 25 SEK each way - which you can barely buy a cup of coffee for. Assuming you're going at a time where the lounge is open, this difference is 100000% worth paying. You can't even use the washroom in the station without paying, but the bathroom in the lounge is free! Bear in mind that the seats are identical in 1st and 2nd on some shorter distance trains (eg the double decker trains), with the only difference being that 1st class has assigned seating and 2nd does not. I had thought of coming back in 2nd class but decided to also pay the extra for 1st despite there being no lounge in Vasteras. I'm glad I did because the 6 car train that was supposed to bring me back got reduced to 3 cars, and 2nd class was packed standing room only, whereas in 1st everyone had a seat.

Adaptive pricing? I don't know, actually. Västerås is not a town I've visited many times. On other routes, sometimes you find 1st class tickets that are less expensive than 2nd class tickets, if you can wait for a train running one or a few hours later. I mean, 1st class departure at eight o'clock may be cheaper than 2nd class att five o'clock.

China bought a X2000 in 1998 to serve between Guangzhou and Hong Kong, it used to be the fastest train in China. It got replaced by CRH-1A in 2007. The train returned to Sweden in 2012, a trailer car went to Swedish railway museum, power car and other trailer cars went back to service in 2020.

Merry Christmas Dylan. Nice Swedish winter video. The train was very nice. The first class ticket is what I would have bought thanks to you. The dining area and food looked interesting. The Stockholm central station is definitely a station I want to visit. I plan to do a Scandinavian Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark trip in tge future. Good to see you're taking my advice branching out. 😊 (kidding) Overall, a very good video. Enjoy your holiday.

I recently travelled in 2nd Class, with a ticket price of 785 SEK (booked 2 days ago) the dynamic pricings really hurts when you have to plan a journey suddenly and have 2-4 days in hand

It's was the flagship of Swedish railways for a long time but it was replaced a decade ago by the X3000. The X2000 essentially became a hand-me-down to be used in Malmö and Gothenburg for passenger congestion relief.
@tigerknight6449
@tigerknight6449 2 года назад
This is a common misunderstanding. First of all there are no train called X3000, It´s called SJ3000, And it´s not a replacement for X2000. X2000 is still the flagship and has always been, SJ3000 is a complement for shorter trips with many stops and has lower speed. It´s mostly used for trips Stockholm - Dalarna and Stockholm - Sundsvall/Umeå beacause it has ETCS. The comfort of X2000 can´t be compared with SJ3000 wich is more of a regional train than a long distance.

Very glad you've done this trip report. Perhaps in the future you could review a refurbed set and give your thoughts between the two. While I sadly have not yet travelled on these units, I'm very much sure my aunt and her family have most likely done so. In case if you ever wondered, here's a video on a refurbed unit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nN2X6H2K-ZM.html Wonder what the next video will be.

They seem to now have English announcements in the train. I was in Sweden a few years ago and rode from Stockholm to Malmo. Announcements and displays were only in Swedish much to the disappointment of some Chinese passengers. I told them that on domestic routes in Europe, only the local languages are used. Which was a good thing as it helped give me some vocabulary.

Traveled yesterday with SJ and the driver did announce route details in English as well. I think the attendant did not, when talking about bistro offering etc.

The staff has a big autonomy in how much information they convey. I think they have some basics they must convey. Some staff are more talkative then others, both in Swedish and English..
