That "movement" at its core should be about reducing bullying and catty gossip from shallow people towards the averagely chubby, lol. There is a difference between "fat" and "obese," and that difference is largely due to the addictive food products that were designed with neuromarketing in mind. "Fat can be pretty too" is not an evil conspiracy, just a social response by people who live in our modern landscape of food and metabolism. It's a social landscape where corporations find ways to convince us they are blameless and thus its our own damn fault... despite the social norms about drinking or eating sweets. But yeah, I see your point, I just wouldn't say it with the simplicity of a gossip girl on some daytime talk show.
When I studied Early Childhood Education (birth to 6 years) back in the mid 80's, we were taught that the most important time in a child's life is the two years before conception - and that this applied to both parents, not just the woman. This is not news, but it's good to see it being explained so clearly, as well as what the repercussions are of not eating well in those two years (or more) before conception.
I weighed 7lb overweight when I fell pregnant . I ate the healthiest diet I could think of and put on the rec amount of pregnancy weight . My first baby, a girl was 11lb at 11 days overdue. My second baby was born on time because they induced me and reassured me he would be about 8.7lbs , but he turned out to be 11lbs 2oz. My last baby would have been at least 11lbs 7oz if they had not induced me 2 weeks early, making him 10.7lb, a pound lighter. I had regular checks for gestational diabetes and all the doctors could say was that I built extremely efficient placenters each time . My kids grew up to be very tall and slim like their father.
I feel like lack of fiber is a huge problem with the Standard American Diet. Most foods high in fiber are also lower in calories. So, you fill up fast without consuming an excess of calories.
I was a 10lb baby when I was born. I was stick skinny until I hit puberty. Before puberty, my doctor was scared for my health because I was so skinny. He put me on weight gain shakes and told me I was dangerously skinny for my age.
There's a big difference in having some extra weight, and being obese, and being a healthy weight is good for your health, we don't do it for society, we do it because we want to live healthier lives.
i told my brother, an alcoholic that i had the same problem he had but with food that was 10 years ago, he said it was NOT the same....I feel vindicated
I am a 6 foot tall man, you can see my abs when I lift my shirt and I have a 30 inch waist approx. However, I store most of my fat in my lower half and have to wear a size 36 trouser (uk size) because of it. Would this still be considered obese?
still; I know this might be saying much but hell, as long as I'm concerned, the worse metabolism, the harder they've gotta work to lose weight. As far as glandular problems go, though, yeah I guess I can empathize.
People need to understand that this video is not trying to make fun of overweight people, nor is it trying to say that you have to be skinny to be pretty. They are just trying to let everyone know that health is very important, especially for our generation, and if you want healthy children, you should start now.
Well you have to start to regulate sugar in the food and especially High Fructose Corn Sugar HFCS to begin with !!! It is difficult to find food with no sugar in USA. Look at breakfast cereals, in Sweden we would call USA cereals candy. Food industries put HFCS in almost every kind of food . Its awful no fat but lots of sugar and then a label that its healthy . Crazy.
He is not talking about genetic backgound, but of in-uterous enviroment, and that depends exclusively on the mother's health and diet. Exposure to insulin in the womb defines the amount of fat cells you are born with. They will never go away, because you can't loose or make fat cells later in life, only empty or fill them.
I can agree to subway. I can still eat to the point i'm comfortable but I'm slowly losing weight. I can still eat stuff I like periodically too and have stopped any weight gain that isn't muscle simply by cutting out the majority of fast food from my diet.
2:55 How can babies come out "small for their age"? Aren't they all the the same age when they come out? I think she means "smaller than normal." It's too bad that we have such a goddamn phobia of being abnormal. Everyone is abnormal; get used to it.
grains turn into glucose, not sugar. Sugar is 50/50 glucose and fructose, fructose goes straight to the liver and goes to fat. So grains don't get processed directly into fat, but if you eat more grains than your body can handle then they will go straight to fat.
The term, "titty bottle" is something my grandpa uses for kids who are whining... LOL! It refers to the bottle that he feeds newborn calfs'(he's a farmer.) Hehehe, my grandpa is awesome! *not sure if the plural for baby cows would be calfs' or calves'.... ???
My mother was not very obese, but a little on the fat (harsh word) side, but I'm 13, a very small kid and only weigh about 80 pounds. By listening to the this video, would I be likely to be obese If I didn't turn my behavior around?
I am absolutely serious. Just because excessive consumption leads to obesity does not mean that widespread obesity is caused by excessive consumption. It is entirely likely that environmental or other lifestyle factors, such as insufficient sleep, have a significant role in the so-called obesity epidemic; that is, if such an "epidemic" actually exists at all.
Well, there's some evidence from epigenetics studies that exposure to famine (for example) can have measurable effects multiple generations down the line, as genes are turned on and off and those modulations (rather than changes to the underlying genes) pass from parent to child, even via sperm. But overall I agree that the uterine environment is more important.
This has nothing to do with this video, I know...But why did I get a commercial about some dude cleaning his house turning on music then exploding in the melted chocolate?
You're talking genetics. Although that is a valid point this video talks about the girls because they are talking about the baby's nutrition WITHIN the womb. What the mom to be takes or does is what translates into the baby.
>Implying that the average person is smart enough to make the right decision. People will always take the most readily available product if they're poor, which many people are. In developed countries, the most readily available stuff is horrible.
Also, a child deserves to be born healthy and ready to take on the world, not obese and prone to all types of heart risks. If it's the mother's unhealthy diet that gives the baby that setback, then it's not the fault of genetics, it's the fault of the mother. No one's saying she has to be under size 6 but if you're going to have a baby at least eat right for him/her.
how tall are you? what is your body fat %? since we can't rely to much on the BMI calculator (not highly accurate), then I hope you are 6" or better and muscular cause other wise you are way too big for your health, sorry had to be said
I don't think you can realistically make the argument that having a proper BMI increases your chances of any disease. Everyone must die, but that doesn't mean you should speed up the process.
It is well established that some ethnicities are more likely to be obese. This only makes sense. If your ancestors' resources were irregular, then it makes sense for their bodies to adapt to this environment. Often when you read studies re: specific ethnic groups with obesity "risk" they conclude that because of this risk they must have a high risk of heart disease etc. Simply because a whole population has an increased risk of disease at an elevated BMI does not mean subpopulations do as well.
What makes an expert reliable is that their opinions are based on evidence, not assumptions - no matter how apparently obvious. There is a huge difference between saying "Americans are larger than they were 60 years ago" and "Americans are larger than they were 60 years ago because they eat the wrong foods". One is supported by evidence, the other, afaik, is not.
It's really a sad reality as early as on young age -- or any age for that matter -- obesity and co-morbidity has been a worldwide epidemic. Also the risk on surgery due to it's complications... we can search on a gastric bypass no surgery alternative to choose a safe way to a healthy weight. Even just 5 to 10% of weight lost will save an individual from co-morbidity, especially the young ones.
I think that it is also important to make sure that women of these ages are not treated as baby machines. Additionally, women are already put under a lot of pressure to be skinny like models. Mental health is an important key factor in obesity. Anorexia and bulimia are mental demons of this issue, and they are caused by social pressure. A woman is more than her uterus and more than the weight she has. Health is important, but so is respect for human decency.
Or eat more frequently in smaller portions. Some people have 'lean times' metabolism. Aka they gain weight stupidly easily when they eat three times a day like your average adult, but lose weight and trim out if they eat small meals or snacks 8 times a day. Varies by person.
It proves him wrong because, for most ppl, it's not something that someone can just take control of. It has to do w/ hormones and a whole host of other things. It's not about laziness. Most overweight ppl don't WANT to be lazy, they just completely lack any energy to make it happen. It's like being exhausted after a day of hard work and then asking that person to get up and do something or asking someone who just worked out to go and work out....
Happiness is an awesome prevention for obesity at any age. The Heart of Caregiving, A Guide to Joyful Caring shares six principles of care for self to ensure happiness.
The videogame industry creates jobs. Taking that away (though you did not imply that it should be) would shut down jobs. Parents and children are the ones that decide whether or not to play video games. Plenty of children are active, and still find time to play games. Children can't be outside all the time, and I would rather see my children playing games then watching television. You are correct about the children being unhealthy from sitting on their butts constantly.
Kinda hard to have a nice life when there are bullys at school that will give them hell, and then theres health problems. kinda takes the niceness out of life at that point.
you're missing the point, people don't allow it, they are biologically chemically set up to be addicted to sugar. And, once you gain a certain amount your brain has a harder time resisting the fat due to processed food and hidden sugars that are now in everything we eat and especially in cheaper food. Even if you work out, Half or more of your programing, for weight gain you didn't choose. So, its not like you can pat yourself on the back for that. Blaming people, isn't going to fix this.
My mother was not overweight when she was pregnant with me and my sisters. i was born 7lbs 4oz and was bone thin till 3rd grade which by then i was normal. I didn't become overweight till i was put of birth control for a condition i didn't have(pcos) i went from the 130s to 173 lbs in a course of little more than a year or so. My younger sister actually has pcos was heavyish but again not significantly overweight till she was put on bc. The older sisnt become significantly overweight till after ahe has given birth to her 1st and was given a depo bc shot. Now the true question is what is happening with the children born in the mid 90s and later. In middle school I only knew a couple of overweight kids. Ie kids born in the mid 80s seemed okay as children, whats changed. I have only personally seen 3 or 4 obese kids and i live in a town 40,000 people.
Don't know - if you want to know, find out. Do a Hydrostatic Weighing or a DEXA scan and let us know. But you're right, you can't count on just weight or even BMI.
I think this is not only a huge problem physically, but also emotionally, which adds on to this epedemic because the so called "help" people want to give aren't helping: the lack of acceptance of overweight people actually makes the disease WORSE. If you just look at these people like they are other human beings and dont say duragatory things, an overweight person is more likely to change. They cant help it unless someone helps them.... and right now, society isnt willing to give them the help.
There are also diseases and medicines for certain diseases that do a wonderful job of inhibiting weight loss. My mom's on a pain medicine (can't think of the name) and has to be on it because of back and joint issues, (arthritis and something else). She also is on asthma medicine. She could stop taking the medicine and enable her body to lose the weight, but then her body would hurt so much that she wouldn't be able to even try to exercise.
Interesting. My cousin's big as a house, she always has been, and all three of her sons have always been skinny. Even now as teens they're tall and skinny. Not to say that we all shouldn't monitor what we put into our bodies.
Yea, it is absolutely disgusting, when I see a parent who ONLY feeds their children junk food and not any healthy foods whatsoever, the parent is essentially FORCING the child to eat the junk food for where else will the child turn to for food other then the parent? I would go as far as call feeding children ONLY junk food as child abuse.
Quite the opposite actually, several studies have shown that being slightly overweight actually extends life expectancy; in reality, what is an "ideal weight" is not based on science; it not only varies from culture to culture, but from time period to time period.
No, I got the INTENDED message. But that's not the only message that it contained, whether intentional or not. There's a difference between misinterpreting something and seeing more to it. I don't recall anybody in that video (correct me if I missed it) stating "IF a woman intends to have children or thinks she might want to have children, this is some information she should consider." All I heard was "Women should." No consideration for the fact that women might have other priorities.
No what I am trying to say is that it's easier said then done people can say that I am gonna workout, I want to lose weight but don't know were to begin.
I do know one thing though... obesity is not genetic. Slow metabolisms can be genetic, but obesity itself isn't. But luckily they can be changed with proper exercise and nutrition. But in most cases childhood obesity is caused by the parent's parenting. If the parents teach their child to be active and to have proper nutrition and they get their kids off their computers and go outside to play football, they will most likely not become overweight. But if the parents don't teach their child to be active and have proper nutrition. If the parents pretty much let there kids eat twinkies and watch tv all day, they will most likely become overweight. Then that style of parenting goes on from generation to generation. I don't know, that's just my theory :P
obesity might not be genetic, but the biological factors like from the parents for example, may lead to the child to be obese in later life. like if you're pregnant but you still smoke or drink alcohol, there can be birth defects when the child comes out. and i think from this video, same thing happens with women who don't watch what they eat.
its really not bad i just need to find away to wean myself off like maybe instead of two cans i drink 1 in a half then after a week go down to 1 can then after that half a can then after that it should be fixed hard part is working up the will power
If I ever decide to have my own kid I'm going on a strict vegan diet to cleanse my body completely, then I will continue during conception and there after throughout the pregnancy. I'm not taking any chances.
u have a choice to live healthy or not. as long as u try to exercise and eat right it doesn't really matter though if u have no control over what is bought for food then u may have a higher chance of becoming obese however there are ways to keep this from happening.
i eat organic pasta./brown rice. i need these for sports performance. Low carb doesn't do work so hot for most atheletes. of course snacks/cereals are bad they have been filtered like crazy son. and added with additives
It's sad to say too many people will not take what is being said seriously, even when they eventually end up in the hospital directly because of being overweight and obese. Our food supply is pathetic and most people literally don't care, it not just physical problem.... it effects they way people think, exemplified by some of the responses written about the video
My point is that if you remove all other risk factors for one set of diseases, you are left only with the remaining diseases, this is more showing the limitations of correlative analysis - an analytical pun, if you will. I personally don't much care if random people have poor diets. I don't care if random people gain or loose weight. I think that people just want someone to criticize.
However, the only weight related illness to see greater diagnosis is diabetes, which could be a result of better diagnosis. Deaths by heart disease and stroke have actually declined while life expectancy continues to increase. If we are getting fatter, it doesn't seem to be actually affecting our life expectancy. As for anorexia - a 5% increase is more than significant, especially the high mortality rate associated with eating disorders.
I hate it when ignorant people comment on a matter that is important for the survival of their own species. Exposing the greedy POS's that brought us to this is next ! Hold them accountable and make them pay one way or the other.
