In 1862 two men accidentally soared into the stratosphere. This is the story of how they barely survived. Learn about the exciting developments in science since with Brilliant! www.brilliant.org/SimonClark
James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell were two Victorian aeronauts, brave air sailors who were the first individuals to sail into the stratosphere, barely returning with their lives.

This video is about the real life scientists who inspired the film the Aeronauts with Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell, the first people to enter the stratosphere, the second layer of the atmosphere. The pair of aeronauts barely escaped with their lives after first entering the frozen middle atmosphere.

Imagine you almost died and the most important thing that comes to mind is the measurements.
@wiesorix
@wiesorix 2 года назад
From what I have learned about science history, I guess that even if Glaisher and Coxwell did manage to get temperature readings, nobody on earth would have believed them. So it would probably take more people and more measurements anyway to convince scientist of the layered atmosphere, and somebody else would have gotten credit for it. Or maybe I've been reading too many stories about things named after the wrong people lately.

Great video on a really interesting, not too well-known story! Just one question. Is a tropopause a part of the stratosphere? If not, there's a mistake in 5:20 and the title. But "first stratospheric flight" surely sounds better than "first tropopausic (?) flight"
@MatthijsvanDuin
@MatthijsvanDuin 2 года назад
the tropopause is the (somewhat ill-defined) boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere

Simon great video and an interesting bit of history. I see you took your own risk too in making the video. You're a brave man to put the word "older" in a sentence refering to your fiancée.😂

*SIMON CLARK* In the context of preparing for international olympiads,jee,etc... Can u please explain exactly step by step how to read a question solution actively *introspectively* such that u r thinking how the person who wrote the solution came up with each step and u r trying to find out his/her thought process...basically such that ur gaining smthg from that solution... Can u do this with the help of some example questions from topics like PnC,Probability,Sequence nd series,circles,etc [maybe jee advanced questions]...like can u also mention the algorithm/logic/patterns memorization part along with the logical reasoning part.... Like from understanding+memorizing theory...to actually mastering the art of problem solving for multiple topics

Henry Coxwell also has a flight-related medical condition named after him; one that occurs when removing one's trousers in a low-pressure environment.
