This ride freaked my whole friend group out after we went on it- All of us vividly remember one of our fiends crying really bad during the ride, but when we bought photos, he was laughing and smiling in all of them-
This is actually making me want to go on it. If I ever go to England again Alton Towers will be on my list. This footage makes it look slower compared to other videos and it actually looks fun. I never liked inversion coasters for some reason but never hurts to try.
I remember when I went on it for the first time aged 10, I absolutely loved it and had my hands up the whole way. The ride literally does make you smile and laugh afterwards + the occasional falling over from the loops-
yes i went when i was 10!! i suprisingly enjoyed it as i went on it in the first day of doing the 1.4m rides. I litterally loved it but got alot of bruises
@@jjsaysno9417 Same with the 1.4m thing, I was just 1.4 and it was the first time I went on a proper rollercoaster and I went from Wickerman to Smiler straight away!
The smiler is hands down my favourite ride. The big hill at the half way line gives my adrenaline so much because you are only lying on your back and as a child I always have that thought that I’m not tall enough and I shouldn’t just be lying on my back and just be on the seat lol
Looks like an incredible ride. I love the double lift hills. Most coasters are over in a flash. This gives you a long ride experience and constant smiles. I would say this park made a great decision to add this amazing coaster. Millions of smiles and thrills for it's future. I hope I can travel from the US and ride this masterpiece.
It's got 2 lifthills because the momentum needed to propel the car through 14 inversions ment that having 1 lift hill alton towers would have to build beyond on the tree line which there not aloud to do, so they split the track into 2 sections with 7 inversions each
Hard to watch this without remembering the tragedy that happened a few years ago. Great footage regardless. *EDIT* Those of you who don't consider the accident a tragedy need to go back to school. Look up the definition. Also... someone doesn't HAVE to die for it to be a tragedy. Don't come for me, you're wasting your time.
The airtime hill after the halfway point and the two heartline rolls at the end are my favourite parts of the ride, absolutely loved it when I first got off.
I took my kids on this ride (14, 16, and 17 at the time). We all loved it and went straight back on it since we had VIP passes. Does leave you feeling a little disorientated afterwards but great fun nonetheless.
idk if its just me but before going on it, i felt scared but the ride itself was actually not that bad, i went on it about 3 times in a row luckily because the park was quiet as it was a weekday and i felt great!! also, i hear the smiler laugh in my nightmares.
Now THIS is the definition of a compact roller coaster... if look in the end you see how long the roller coaster is despite its suuuuper limited space... And that double 0G barrel roll in the end... Muah!!
This is my favourite ride in England! I love it so much! We live two and a half hours away but it is worth the drive! I can’t wait to come back to Alton towers! All of the rollercoasters are so amazing!
If I ever went on this ride, that "Ha-ha-hahh!" jingle would be going through my head all damn day, always singing that song, and I would most certainly drive the people I was with totally batshit as a result - to the point where they would say, "Hey, I've got a GREAT idea! Let's put him back on The Smiler again, and just LEAVE him there!"
I remember going with school to alton towers when the smiler first opened. The queues were too long for me to bother but it had such a nasty reputation. People kept talking about people dying on the ride (could be rumours, never found out) but I had this image in my head of it being really scary either way. I don't know if going on the pepsi max (and nearly having a panic attack on the way up) tempered any fear I had around rollercoasters but this just looks fun now that I see it. I love fast and twisty coasters.
! No one died on this ride ! While there was a major accident on this ride no one died!! There were injuries and some of the riders in the accident had to get their legs amputated, but i reccomend watching a video called "what really happened on the smiler" to get more info about the factors that played. Since then proceedures and trainings have been improved and more safety systems have been installed on every ride at the park. It's still safe to this day as all works efficiently (i say efficient bc in the modern day, the least you'll get about Smiler is it stopping and riders likely having to be removed off the ride because of something detected in the safety systems :/ )
Nobody died but in 2015 there was a collision and left 4 passengers with Major injuries. There was a glitch in a system and an empty cart got sent out then a couple minutes later a cart of 16 people were sent out. The glitch made the mechanics break on the empty cart and it failed to complete the full loop on one of the loops. As the empty cart just sat there the cart with 16 passengers came up to the loop but hit the empty cart with force and the first 4 riders in the front row suffered injuries but no deaths.
@@Ari_247 there was no glitch. The winds made the first car fail the loop and then the operator manually overode the safety system later on, sending a car with passengers that had stopped down
What are you on about? There are multiple 60fps 4k povs from 2019. Ridership is still high too, you can often queue two hours for the ride even now The only reason there aren't povs everywhere is because Alton Towers doesn't allow cameras on rides
I went to Alton towers, and only being a child, I was so shocked when I was tall enough to go on the smiler!!! It was such a cool ride, deffo worth the £10 for a fast pass ticket!
It’s also got a massive amount of backstory towards it too!! I really suggest checking it out if you’re interested in it, it’s regarding the fictional ministry of joy
I’m to scared to ride this lmao, I can’t stop thinking about the event that happened on the smiler with the cars crashing that’s what keeps me away from it t-t
and the fact they run it so it still feels like your going to collide with other carts is a joke. i legit went on it kinda knowing it wouldn't happen but seeing us drop and another carriage coming towards us just took the fun out of the ride
@@Deadmau5l it's been like that since it opened, it's a dueling coaster and adds to the thrill. The cars are on two different sections of the ride, and it just depends of timing if the carts line up dueling next to each other
@@janey27701001 possibly. It just seems that his arms go loose at exactly the same time he stops laughing just for a second or two. If you see other videos where riders have passed out, you'll see what I mean. Fair play for giving it a go though after all the negativity with this ride
@@janey27701001 you are correct. I let my arms loose for a moment, then realised they were in the way of the recording so grabbed my knees, then just reverted back to the bars. I wish it was fast enough to pass out but unfortunately it's not. 🤣
@@Seth_yt17 its not that scary really, its not that fast, not that high and the pops of airtime make it fun and the inversions seem quite normal after the second half as there is so many
Trust me, safety systems have dramatically improved since the accident. Said accident was also the ride operator's fault, as the safety systems were overridden even when it detected a train still on the track. Alton Towers has taken even more precautions now, to make sure the ride is completely safe for all its guests. If any rides do break down while you're on it, you'll just be stopped in a safe place along the course while the ride staff looks for the cause of the stop. This is nothing to fear though, as breakdowns naturally happen on all roller coasters, most of the time due to the ride's computers being extra precautious. Roller coasters are built for this stuff though, and as many safety precautions as possible are taken on every existing ride. If you're still somewhat afraid to ride because of safety, just remember that you're more likely to actually die on the car ride to the theme park than be injured on a roller coaster.
my first time on it was at the front, on the end seat very good. went in single riders queue but it still took about 30 minutes to get on since it was at the end of the day
Honestly was shitting myself before I went on the smiler for the first time but it was amazing, smooth ride, made me slightly dizzy, NOT SICK but dizzy, weirdest bit is ur actually smiling the whole way around…
I remember going on this a few times when it first opened, the best time was during Halloween, it was late and when we reached the top we could see all the stars in the night sky 🌌 definitely visit at night if you can because it’s a whole new experience
Just get your selves on it. Its a very good ride. Been on it about 8 times now. Its one to experience as videos don't do it justice. This ride aswell as others has had tight safety measures put in place to ensure safety. Don't be put off by that accident let it add to the thrill. Bless those that got injured tho.
Shouldn't be scared. Because of the crash its now probably the safest ride in the world at this point due to the amount of bloody safety precautions they have in place. Truly a marvel of engineering. Went on it a while ago planning to go again cause it is absolutely brilliant.
@@lotte2899 true but every time I’ve been to Alton the queue for it’s usually 45 minutes long or more. So even if I ignore the accident ain’t no way I’m waiting that long for it.
