Bad idea, Sorkin worship this kind of people, he is the epitome of centrist politics, all about likable personality and token politics, and nothing about policies, if you watched West Wing, you would realise that he is the kind of person that think that taking people social security is a smart and good policy.

When Rashida Jones says he's just trying to be "an asshole", she's doesn't mean he's actually a pretty swell guy. She's just commenting on the fact that pretty much his whole story has been driven by him trying to assert himself as a commanding, masculine, tough-guy, something he was denied at Harvard when he couldn't get a girlfriend and wasn't allowed into any of the cool fraternities. He wants to fit in and be cool, but deep down he's just a sad dork. The ending song of Baby You're a Rich Man even fits this perfectly.
@z0uLess
@z0uLess 4 года назад
This is a good interpretation. However, calling him a sad dork is exactly the same kind of thing that makes him a sad dork. Everyone wants to fit in. Behind every bully is a crowd of bullies.

I never had a problem with how they presented women in this film. As a female I can safely say women like that exist. And men like mark and Eduardo exist. Both genders have their fair share of jackassery. For me, it's BRILLIANT.
@AB-vy5hh
@AB-vy5hh 4 года назад
Same. Bedsides, the movie is supposed to be from Marks perspective... His scorn for his ex was part of his motivation. And I’m sure he did view those 2 girls as groupies 🤷🏽‍♂️
@nereidcastillo9364
@nereidcastillo9364 4 года назад
Just look at the scene after where the girls look at Mark with determination in their eyes and say “Is there anything we can do?” And he IMMEDIATELY shuts them down with “No”. They were actually willing to contribute and help and use their skills, but Mark never viewed them as anymore than groupies so that’s where they stayed. And I think it’s a fair representation of how women were (and kinda still are) viewed in the tech industry. In 2004, it would be uncommon to see a female programmer. Even though it wasn’t too long ago, the treatment of women back then was a world of a difference than it is now.
@mikahong
@mikahong 4 года назад
@@nereidcastillo9364 I know but that's the point. The film was supposed to make Marl as this unsociable, detached guy that doesnt realize his own jackassery. You can even see Eduardo looking out for him w his anti social behavior. What you just said means the film accomplished portraying what it was supposed to portray, it served its purpose. Therefore, its BRILLIANT.
@MrLogic88
@MrLogic88 4 года назад
Agreed.
@brandony8691
@brandony8691 4 года назад
Exactly. The way the women are portrayed here in the movie is exactly the indictment of the Silicon Valley bro culture that Fincher was going for. Plus, I don't know if there's any particular way that you would be able to change the script to have a more dynamic female character involved in the plot without it feeling shoehorned or diluting some of the larger messages regarding said bro culture. I also think some leeway should be given to Sorkin and Fincher for the fact that in 2010, Zuckerberg hadn't yet been publicly shown as an asshole.
@ScarlettDaleWoodall
@ScarlettDaleWoodall 4 года назад
Some of the best statements made by the film are largely accidental. I remember thinking,"When geeks are empowered, we'll show the world that we can handle it better". But we didn't. It was never a question of geek v. quarterback because both groups were making the same mistake. They imagined social ethics as the way to validate themselves and become successful. Having the pretense of morality was just a way to get laid. The truth is that we should be better people even when it doesn't lead to our sexual and financial success. I think the way to be happy with that path is to accept a smaller life. Not a 007 sex life, but a few partners with mutual good will. Not a bagillion dollars, but your favorite soda and movies. People need comfort. Life without comfort creates bitterness and contempt. They don't need opulence. Opulence deprives others of comforts or even needs.

I think it would also help with doing away with the term "nerd". Like whenever I hear that word I imagine a person with glasses who's socially awkward. @ScarlettDaleWoodall

The whole character of Christy in the biography the movie was based on was never in the room with Edwardo when the fire was set. He was already starting to feel turned off with her because of how clingy she was. Such as how she would worry and believe he was cheating on her when he made trips to California. At the point when she sets the fire he had been on the phone with her while she's going through one of her hysterical dramas about his absence. So he tells her he has a present for her in the closet hoping it would help her calm down. They hang up so she can find the present, and when she calls again it's so she got into another round of hysterics because after she found the present she set it on fire and had been arrested because she set the dorm room on fire to.

If you're looking for another movie to do an episode on, might I suggest Valarian, or the fifth Element? Both movies try very hard and come so close to working IMO

Jamie Loftus, I thought that name was familiar, she was on the episode of Behind the Bastards where they discussed Elite Panic!

Gave up around the 7 minute mark when I realized all the shade you’d been through around so far was during the part of the video where you talk about what you like in the film.

I don't know, maybe it's because I love this movie and am trying to post-hoc justify that, but I feel like the whole movie was a _huge_ indictment of the tech culture/industry/bs and highlighting the misogynistic and hollow motivations and origins behind that.

Mark is like a low key, but not as evil version of Walter White and Eduardo in this movie is like a more smarter and mature version of Jesse Pinkman.

Do House M.D., how physical pain tranacends to a pain that is more than physical in nature. Also, why a pained character is so relatable, and believable since it seem to translate to charisma :))

I am from Spain and i don't really know much about Aaron Sorkin besides his work, and...well, here i describe it as a really american tone but i don't know what is the thing about him that makes you resent him. He is obviously an incredible writter, can you explain me what makes him kind of a guilty pleasure?

I feel like a major blunder was not discussing the parallels between The Social Network and Citizen Kane. Mark refreshing Jessica's page at the end is supposed to be the film's "Rosebud" moment

Also, how weird is it to do a PC reading of Brenda's character (who even in the book is described as obsessive) but not of Divya's character not being played by an Indian actor...
