we have a local hall here in town where the freight elevator is in the back of the kitchen. They tried to tell us that we were going to have to use the stairs. I told them we were leaving and they could explain to the event organizers why we left. haha took them about 30 seconds to agree to us coming through the kitchen.

So Bart, have any of the speaker or PA companies approached you to license the B&S Slanted Speaker Saver yet? It's still a stupendously brilliant idea.

Ha Ha! We keep a pretty low profile here on RU-vid....that may sound wrong, but we like it that way. It's kind of our little club here with all of you so we don't get much in the way of offers or solicitations.

I've always said, DJ's and Live Sound Engineers are separate but equal professions. We can't do what they do, and they certainly aren't setup to do live sound for bands. Equal respect.

I certainly have a lot of respect for DJs. Last November and December, I worked a 4 week run of corporate parties; I was sub-contracted for this job, and was working with a team of people I'd never met, let alone worked with before. I was working alongside an awesome DJ named Jay. He admitted he didn't know what to expect of me initially, having heard all sorts of horror stories about sound engineers being hard to work with. He and I worked together really well, and there's high chance we'll be doing it all again this year; we shared some long days and had lots of fun along the way. We each have our skills, and by teaming up we had a great run of events. Regarding your comments on gear; I agree 100%. As much as I love to go back to my roots and use an analogue board, I certainly don't miss lugging around huge racks of outboard and running out huge analogue multicores. While I do use multicores on stages to aid in keeping things tidier, I'm not running out hundreds of feet of it any more, and having a digital console all I need to run is a Cat5 and power to front of house if I have a front of house position, or just use my tablet. There's no way I'm going back to the old days. I can roll in with my gear and be set up in no time, and out even faster.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on all of this. Agreed...analog is great, it's the hauling everything else around it. Wrapping a 150ft cat 5 snake is so much easier, but I am just as happy mixing FOH on an analog desk if that's all I had to worry about.

Great episode! Can't imagine how annoying that elevator fiasco (and the entire load in process at this space) was 😬

It just would have taken one simple courtesy e-mail to the vendors coming in that day.....they knew we were coming.

We got stuck in an elevator once during load out. We were 3 guys and 2 Presonus 18 subs on road cases, two Presonus tops on a single case, a Behringer XR18 on a rack case, a 6u rack case for the wireless mic + combinator, 2 Mackie Thump, a box of cables and some mic and speaker stands. We reached the ground floor and the doors opened to a big round table in our face. I peeped outside and the hallway was filled with round tables and chairs from the catering guys and no one in sight. We were like, "Eyy guys?? Are you there??". 😂

I'm a bit of a jack of all trades...I do production and sound for bands, play in a couple myself, and have been doing a surprising amount of wedding DJ gigs. No controller or anything, I curate and play a crossfaded playlist through a kick ass sounding system, and I have a neat little light rig with a couple cheap movers. It seems to be what a lot of folks are looking for out here in rural Iowa, and the fee is nothing to sneeze at.

Thanks for sharing! We would say the DJ's are winning when you calculate time/pounds of gear per hour vs. pay.

Wow - great mix - and with two loud amps (Fender Bandmaster 40w, Showman 85w) the guitar player kept stage volume under wraps. I owned both of those amps and never could use more than one - and sold the Showman because it was too loud for anything but outdoor shows. What is the red/silver folding X-stand table you have again? Can't remember the link - thanks!

Great job at staying calm. I would've used my compact RCF Evox Line arrays with a 18 in Sub for that crazy load in and small crowd LOL.

Have to agree about the backdrop - it defines the stage. I use to use a 300g/m2 fire retardant backdrop for our band gigs. I’m positive it helped with acoustics and made the stage look good. The bands would hang their banners in front of it. The down side was that you had to hang it from a truss and that meant more kit to cart around and set up which took time.

Once the lights were down...it did make the stage look better. Black hides so much!

Thanks Bart for the video. An event also happened to me in a castle where there were no elevators. Stairs only. A feat not to be repeated. Well done Jed, a virtuous collaborator. Always a warm greeting from Gorizia, Italy. It's cold here and I play with a saxophonist in the casinos of nearby Slovenija. Minimal instrumentation and very low volumes.

This place makes me boil inside....every time! That's not a great attitude, but it's a fact...and it's just not me. Normally, we don't like to call places is out, but we wish people would stop using this venue...the horror stories go on and on. The bottom line, they treat their vendors poorly.

Can each fixture on the 4 Bar Quad be assigned to a different channel? That is, 8 independently controlled lights for precise color mixing, etc? I'm starting to add lighting to my sound guy tool box and I am considering purchasing a pair of these quads, but only if they can do what I need them to do.
@mikorsajua

Yes you can control each individual light on the 4Bar, to operate independently using DMX.

HATE lights. A necessary evil! I use 2 a side for most shows but 4 a side at some. Mine are set to slowly morph from color to color. Separate constant mix of lighting all night. Plug them in and let them run. None goes home humming the light show.
