The Sound Couple head out of town a short distance to a new club! Everything went great...except for we were not planning on our van's brake lines failing! The cavernous club was hopping and a good time by all....as we continue to work with our hazer, it worked a bit better, but we are still unsatisfied with its overall performance.
Under the circumstances, we made the decision to make the trip home with our ailing brakes...it was late nigh freeway driving with just one stop into our neighborhood needed. Rain always makes a load out more interesting!
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16

As if the normal stress of traveling to a new venue was not enough, to have to deal with the leaking brake on the van-not to mention the heavy rain during load-out-would flatten me. But, as we have all learned over the years, the professionalism of The Sound Couple rises to the top. We appreciate that Bart and Stacy allows us to watch how you two handle the set-up and idiosyncrasies of this new venue. Of course, it helps to have the known quantity of a very familiar band. The process of choosing to use the console for mixing, as opposed to the iPad is always interesting to observe. Many learning opportunities at this gig. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us.

We were wondering when someone would comment on that! Yes, we were thinking iPad at the beginning, but after a discussion with owner, we decided on mixing with the console on the other end of the room would be best. It was a bit further back than we like, but with the acoustics of this room, the further back the better! Thanks Dean!

For sure...there are many factors to consider determining the best course of action on vehicle issues. In this case, our location, time of day, and obligations were at the top of how we made our decision to drive home....we had brakes, but compromised in functionality. Appreciate the feedback on the video...we try!

Overall, it really is, but it seems more cyclical than it used to be. In part because many clubs have systems now or the clubs are gone. Clubs used to be our bread and butter gigs....they just don't exist like they used to.

There is nothing worse than having a vehicle issue on the way to the gig. It just sits there in your head while youre working the gig. With every video i watch i confirm how similar we think, right down to the pre-gig, FB, Instagram, Internet research. There is so much you can find out beforehand with simple searches. BTW, i love these videos so much, ive gone back to re-watch the old ones. 🙂

I would call it our version of a "walk through". Between this research and a phone call, it generally gets you in a good enough spot without the time/expense of a walk through.

Hey guys Joseph here from Los Angeles California I saw the gig log the band was very good the setup was very good kind of reminds me of when I was setting up how tedious it is and then all of a sudden something goes wrong with your vehicle hauling your equipment sometimes the strangest things happen while doing or going to one but all in all the sound couple always pulls through 😅 stay safe stay cool and keep on rockin😊

We run a production company where we provide lighting for many events across the US. We've been through so many different types of haze machines over the years. One that we have liked is the ADJ Entourage. It self cleans when you disconnect DMX. I think because of this they've been able to sit for 5-6 months a year and still kick on just fine every time. The output is insane. We use 2 to fill arenas and it maintains with keeping them at 20% output. We also clean ours with vinegar and distilled water every so often just to keep it unclogged. For an inexpensive unit they're pretty incredible. I also really like Black Label Ray Tracer fog fluid. It has extremely long hang time and can find it at Guitar Center. Because of the hang time one gallon of that will most likely last you over a year with pretty heavy use. I can't stand when I have to worry about the reliability of my gear so I was over the other foggers and hazers we went through lol.

Great gig - the stage setup looked fantastic! I think the rain was a prophetic fallacy for your leaking brakes? Plus we all 'love' a late-night wet load-out. I had hazers that always seemed to get blocked, I eventually invested in ones that had a 'self cleaning' function that emptied the fluid from the system at the end of the show = no more problems with hazers. I hope you get your brakes sorted okay.
@thesoundcouple

Didn't realize there was such a feature, but makes a lot of sense. In our long tail of hazer issues, I finally dug into ours and replaced the pump myself (service with Blizzard with shipping is expensive, but the pump price from them wasn't crazy expensive)...it now works great! Found the exact pump on Ali Express for just a few bucks and ordered a couple of them as backups.

Bart when mixing are you setting all your master volumes for subs,mains,monitors to 0db or something else? Also what’s the sweet spot on your Cdl speakers level?
@thesoundcouple

We keep them right at 0. We will boost subs 3dB when running single. We go over our Worx control settings in these two videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Gl3XpCVcWA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-31RHaAYMMbw.html I love that it's simple.

@thesoundcouple

We would agree...we really appreciate how they are able to articulate vocals without sounding harsh. Just remember that you are limited to two connected boxes for ground stacking. You would need to fly them for more than two. From our experience, three boxes is the max you could fly sensibly in a mobile configuration. More than that would be for an install.@@DJILLEE

Bart, do you have a standard track you run through the PA to help balance out the room, as you know it well enough to know what needs to be tweaked? Something you can run before the band is set up?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 8 месяцев назад
Yep....but it's time to change it up...the tracks I use and why: 1. Sara Bareilles - Kaleidoscope Heart: for subtle system check (mains/monitors). Many of our our gigs, we are working with people dong their thing to support the event...nothing more to irritate people is to fire up the system and start blasting them! 2. Sara Bareilles - Uncharted : Good dynamic recording - pleasant for others in the room. 3. Limelight - Rush: Good dynamic recording. 4. Dua Lipa - Want to: Good recording/subwoofer check - will not play if not appropriate. 5. Dua Lipa - Don't start now: Good sounding track for live reference. 6. Shania Twain - Up! - Good sounding track/stereo test. I don't use everyone of these for every gig. Depending on the gig, we try to be sensitive to the other efforts going on around us....we try to set a good vibe and not irritate others that are trying to get work done. Sometimes we will be asked to play some background music for the workers setting up the rooms which we will happily provide at a comfortable volume.
@makingmusiconline2309
@makingmusiconline2309 8 месяцев назад
@@thesoundcouple I remember years ago using Asia - Time After Time, very dynamic and quite Rush like without the higher pitched singer (and I love Rush too!). Sara Bareilles, excellent choice. I've got the Shania Twain, and while I've enjoyed Dua Lipa on the radio, I've not listened to her properly, which I'll correct now :) Please keep us updated with whatever you choose to change to. Thank you!
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 8 месяцев назад
Nice - Dua Lipa is produced very well. Some tracks can have that over compressed sound, but other tracks are more natural always with top notch production. The overly processed compressed sound to the limit on some pop music is hopefully a fad! Some, like Dua, seem to be selectively using it. @@makingmusiconline2309

Out of curiosity, what dBA levels did this gig average at the console?

Good question...we didn't take any readings at this particular gig, but I am guessing we were pushing at least 95dB...it was an extremely cavernous room.

That's a loaded question! RU-vid: 1. The Sound Couple 2. Dave Ratt 3. Michael Curtis 4. Stage Left 5. Drew Brashler 5. Manufactures' channels. Learn frequencies - the good and the bad. GEQ's/PEQ's, shelving, etc. Learn compressor/gates Know the difference between pre/post everything Understand gain structure - any and all theories. Understand the signal chain in a typical PA (it's all pretty much the same). Learn a digital console - X32 is a must. Depending on your market...select what you should become familiar with. Allen & Heath, PreSonus...maybe Soundcraft, they are the other usual suspects. If you don't at least have an analog console that has a decent feature set, you should pick one up to practice on. See if you can get in anywhere to learn...a local club, a church. Even it if it's to help out or observe...most people would be open. I used to go out and see live bands and ask the sound guy questions...most were more than willing to talk, especially if it came with a beer! Anyone else got more?

Can't help thinking of the economics of a night like this, 4 band members, two sound people, if each person makes 250 (I just pulled a number) , the venue has to sell enough to clear 1500 just to break even on the live music.Would be interesting to know the real numbers.

So if you carry vise grips you can pinch the rubber brake line by the wheel and it will get you home.

@@thesoundcouple it's a drum, there are no rubber line parts on that. what happened is the brake cylinder in the drum crapped out. I would just top out the brake fluid in the master cylinder for the front brakes (there's two tubs) and you'll make it home fine. It's when you break a front brake line, that's when it's not safe to drive

@@thesoundcoupleJust for reference, even if there's no rubber hose, you can use vise grips to crimp down on the metal brake tubing and stop the flow. It will mean you need to splice in a new section of brake line, but that's relatively easy for a shop to do (also often necessary when doing brake jobs in snowy areas as the lines rust frequently.) Driving without one rear brake drum should be no issue, even crimping off both rears should be no issues as long as you don't try to drive like a maniac lol. I would actually recommend crimping the metal lines over the rubber lines, simply because the rubber lines can crack and tend to be more expensive that just straight steel brake tubing.
