PREX 1603 leads a ND&W train west on the former Wabash 5th District ( also ex Maumee and Western MAW). At 3:18 they do a high speed run by 6X the actual speed! After dropping their inbound cars i Woodburn the engine runs light west of town onto Norfolk Southern owned tracks to pick up their interchange.

They've put a lot of work into the track. Could use a lot more. Kudos nevertheless!

I'm amazed that the company allows them to travel down something that could easily derail the train.

Maybe a giant hand reaches down to set the train back on the track.

Michelle Mills the previous owner didn't do a thing to these tracks, and Pioneer Rail has done a lot already. There is a trick to running the ND&W, however there is only so much money that can go around for track work. So much work is needed on this line that you can only do so much with what you have.

Love the car painted 'scrap do not load'. Wondering how long it will be in service, and getting loaded and unloaded. Unless there is a scrapyard on the ND&W line, suspect they got it to actually use.
@markschenher4559
@markschenher4559 7 лет назад
That designation means the car itself is scrap It may have a structural defect or faulty hatches that cost more to repair than the car is worth When I worked for the railroad certain car series would go to scrap if the repair was more than a nominal sum You could put on new brake shoes or an air hose but wheels or trailer hitch and scrap yard it is.
@rusty0101
@rusty0101 7 лет назад
I agree that's what it should mean. I'm just wondering if that's what ND&W is doing with it.

This isn't the first time I've seen a car marked for scrap moving with a load. The last time was a car loaded with coke.

That sped-up portion really shows how bad the tracks are. The locomotive is really leaning early on in that section of the video, and watching the loco and rail cars swaying like that is just a little scary. So is watching the rails flex under the weight. Yes, I know they're supposed to flex a little, but in some spots they're moving probably six inches or more. I'm honestly surprised a train hasn't derailed yet on that line.
@ScottTaipaleRail
@ScottTaipaleRail 7 лет назад
You gave me an idea. Next time I film them I'll place a ruler next to the rail to measure the flex

Really enjoyed the video! I was just wondering how much improvement Pioneer has done to the line. Some of it still looks rough.
@ScottTaipaleRail
@ScottTaipaleRail 7 лет назад
Thank you! They've added new ties for the entire length of the line. Most of the leveling and ballast has gone to the worst spots. Between Jewell and Napoleon (where my leaning locomotive video was filmed) actually looks like a decent railroad now.
@lawbench191
@lawbench191 7 лет назад
That's great! It is my understanding Pioneer is taking over the Piedmont & Northern trackage from Iowa Pacific around the Charlotte NC region. Hopefully they will have a better shot at making it work.

We were chasing this line 2 years ago. and seen a MoW gang getting their HighRails off at a Crossing. Stopped and chatted with them. They said that the Morning Run had a Derailment starting out at Antwerp O. When the Crew was coming back from Defiance O. they also had a Derailment. They are only suppose to roll at 6 miles an hour. if they go anything over 6 miles. then they have derails the MoW gang told us. I thought NS was Bad when I was on then

The only way to fix it is to replace every single piece of rail I hate to think how much that would cost.

There are equally bad shortlines, however its not like they are hauling passengers. Grounding an engine or cars is not a huge concern, but believe me Pioneer has done a lot for this line. Look up the Maumee and Western, that's the previous operator. Way worse...

Bad rail lines need to be repaired and upgraded, so that trains can run on them at highway speeds to compete with the trucking industry. When a rail line is neglected to the point that it gets into the shape that this one is in, trains are forced to slow to a crawl. That gives industries the incentive to turn to shipping freight by truck, and that ultimately leads to rail lines getting abandoned. Trucks beat the hell out of our highways, resulting in rutted pavement, and uneven concrete sections, which mess up a vehicle's front end alignment. More truck traffic on our highways leads to more pollution too, which contributes to global warming. Truck drivers get pushed too far, get fatigued, fall asleep at the wheel, and cause accidents. Not only does that result in property damage, injury or death, but it also causes massive traffic jams, that throw thousands of people off kilter, making them late getting where they need to go. We need to keep the freight trains running to reduce the number of trucks on our highways. A freight train, while carrying the freight of 100 trucks, only emits the pollution of four trucks. Each time I'm sitting at a railroad crossing, waiting for a train to go by, I say to myself that each car on this freight train is one less truck on our highways. REPLY
