Bad Track locomotive hunting for good track

PREX 1603 leads the Napoleon Defiance and Western train between Antwerp and Cecil Ohio. This railroad line is the former Wabash Railroad 5th District. Pioneer Railcorp operates Napoleon west to Woodburn Indiana where Norfolk Southern ownership begins. After Norfolk and Western sold the line the next owners Indiana Highrail and Maumee and Western both deferred maintenance. Under Pioneer ownership conditions are improving but there are 50 miles of track that has 100 year old rail, poor drainage and rotten ties.

They've only derailed once while I was waiting for them. Usually it happens before I get there.

How are these tracks even legally allowed to have a train run over them? Especially that one with the spike coming out? Just seems like a derailment is unavoidable

Lol, I love how you speed the video up Scott. I would also as it takes them forever to get from point A to point B. I just can't believe, as they are getting more and more business, that they would try and venture down some of those twisted up rail. Seems that they would be getting those old rails replaced first before trying to add so much more extra weight on top of those old ones. It's like setting themselves up for a derailment.

Thanks, I think it hilarious sped up. It's tough to chase though since it takes 20-30 minutes between most crossings. I think it would be great if they could get used mainline rail from one of csx or ns's projects.

The track is more worse than I thought. Literally there was no spike holding the rail down at the 1:45 mark. The tie on the left is chewed up

How sad this is! We once were the pride of the world with our great rail system and industrialization that grew these United States! Now our rail system in shambles and industrialized companies like steel and coal basically gone.

It's now Nov. 2019, could you do an update video on that line maybe next spring? By the way, that looks like trolley size rail. There are a lot of short lines and spurs in my neck of the woods that still have that. Is every one of those engines GP - 9's?

They run on 90lb rail rolled between 1910-1915 depending which stick your looking at. They have GP16s and GP20’s. The GP9 is supposed to leave the property. I did post a current video last week showing some improvements on the line. This particular spot is still in the same condition though.

I’m never t sure what the long term plan is as far as the rail is concerned. All improvements so far are ballast and tie replacement

Another awesome video, this railroad is quite amazing. Out of curiosity, has the ND&W or Pioneer for that matter ever come forward and ask you to be the unofficial or official historian for this railroad ? Since you have seen the absolute worst to what is happening now I would think that they would be quite impressed with the videos you have taken over the lifespan of this railroad..

jfreelan1964 I have talked with all of the road crews on the NDW and he’s some of thier thoughts from what one of the engineers told me. He likes the line, but wishes they could move faster. And he’s glad there moving more car loads per year

The state(s) where this quality of track is prevalent should block off the track and fine the RR operators daily unti the track is brought back up to industry safe standards.

With the accident that happened in WA then the passenger train went off the rails over I-5, that set some precedent as far as responsibility but this video is for freight... I don't think there is anything that can be done because this is the RR's property and they have full autonomy. I don't think the RR companies are even liable for spills of hazardous materials but please correct me if I am wrong on that.

ever since the late 70s staggers act, political leaders have been HANDS OFF when it comes to rail regulations... also you just can't block off the track and fine the RR operators daily until the track is brought back up to industry safe standards... this is already FRA excepted track www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/213. if you stop rail traffic you only hurt the CUSTOMERS that use rail services

@@D3vlin for sure railroads are federally regulated and must follow a set of safety guidelines so they can't just act all on their own... and they are definitely responsible for spills... they are also responsible for not moving more than FIVE haz mat loads on this stretch of rail because it is FRA excepted track... they face FEDERAL fines if rules are not followed

I’m sorry but the condition of these tracks is negligence, even the crew in the locomotives should be held responsible for daring to take their engine on them. Where does responsibility start? Why is this line not shut down for repairs?

I think your use of a telephoto lens makes the track seem much worse than it really is by compressing all the variations into a short space.

Maybe the governments should focus on building infrastructure and defending the nation instead of acting like a charity and paying endless welfare. Should be plenty of funds for important things if they stop their social science experiments

It is just a disaster waiting to happen. I don't understand why the US is negligent about its railways, when they could be used to help alleviate the road traffic.
