@@raindrainxi I’d argue that Twilight Princess wasn’t going for realism, but the style they went for didn’t hide the low polygons the same way wind Waker does. I think it still has a visual identity of its own outside of the more generic “realistic” games in the same era. I agree it looks dated compared to WW, but I think if the game was made just a little later it would look a lot less so.

Another thing that is important to mention is that Spider-verse makes a concious effort to appeal to more of a teenager audience, while it's still apropiate for evrybody, it's not targeting children like Illumination or even some of Disney's recent releases. ATSV is getting the full blockbuster treatment in a way animated movies usually don't, and with Sony cooking up an R-rated release we might actually see the stigma of animation being only for children removed from the general audience.

It’s really different for Disney and Pixar. For starters, Pixar is experimenting not only with the incredible “realistic” effect with movies like Toy Story 4 and Soul, but also leaning into more a cartoony sensibility with Luca and Turning Red; then you have their upcoming Elemental, which appears to be more cartoony but is being depicted as a mature rom-com story. Meanwhile, Disney really just has had a groove since Tangled, and like any era of Disney Animation, it takes a real shakeup to do anything different. Maybe the failure of Strange World can facilitate that a la Black Cauldron, who knows.

It’s cool that Dreamworks thought to take some cues from Spider-Verse. I’m interested in seeing the Puss in Boots sequel due to its animation. It’d be nice to have a video game akin to Spider-Verse that influences other major game studios to do more stylized games rather than realistic. While unlikely, after Spider-Verse, I’d be down for Sony to collab with WB to do an animated adaptation of Superman vs The Amazing Spider-Man if only to see Superman and Spidey meet in the art style of Spider-Verse.
@toadstein

I disagree with the part about the gaming industry. There should be a place for Realistic Looking games. Movies don't even have to be animated to be realistic. For that reason I think it's more so a crime if an animated movie tries to be realistic because If you make the animation in your movie too realistic you might wonder why they didn't make it live action. Gaming doesn't have this luxury. You can't make a Live-Action game. Only one that tries to be as close as possible to looking live-action. And there are plenty of games with non-realistic art styles. Usually the games that have realistic art styles have them because the devs wanted them to.

Thanks for mentioning the homogenization of Disney's character designs in its recent movies. One thing I thought from watching the Strange World ads on TV was "those designs do not fit with the scenery". I think it worked better on Raya and Frozen but yeah, I wish they've have more variety. Just to compare, there were more typical designs like in Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback to more stylish like Pocahontas and Atlantis. And Hercules had Gerald Scarfe (from Pink Floyd's The Wall) as main character designer. And those designs still slap.

It was a good idea for Disney to look outside the company when coming up with a distinct visual style for Hercules. Unfortunately last time I watched the film I thought that one of its problems was that Scarfe's character designs did not mesh well when placed directly alongside the more traditional Disney ones. Both Scarfe and Disney's styles work well on their own, but I don't think they worked well together.

As a die-hard 2D animation fan it brings me such joy that movies like Spiderverse push the boundaries and blur the line of 3D and 2D, and we are even still getting some incredible 2D movies! The Rise of the TMNT movie this year fucking killed me dead where I stood, it was so incredible and GORGEOUS. I never want 2D to die. There is something to it that almost no 3D movies can grasp. Spiderverse is the best of the ones that have attempted it but things like the Mitchell’s vs Machines, Bad Guys, Arcane… it’s exactly as you said. Trying to stick to realism can only take you so far, Disney. It’s when the animation lets loose with style that it really shines.

It instantly became my favourite Spuderman movie even beating out Spiderman 2 (yes I am a Raimi stan). I love everything about it, from the various artstyles to the animation to the messages and themes of the movie. You could just tell that this was pure, unfiltered passion by a group of people who love the character of Spiderman. I mean c'mon, that animation. The fact that in certain scenes Miles is animated on 2's compared to Peter who is animated on 1's to show that it feels more natural to Peter to web swing than it does Miles. This isn't just a visual thing, it's telling story and building character through the animation and through the visuals. It's funny how Browntable mentions 'oh it's focused on Miles, why not Peter?' because I feel like that's how Miles character is in the story itself (especially in the Miles Morales game). Miles is trying to move out of Peter's shadow and become his own Spiderman. Life imitating art ey. I could talk for days but I'll leave it here with this. The character animators were directed to have them move like stop motion figures. It felt like a good balance given the environments and lighting and ‘realism’ aspect were absolutely gorgeous while still having a strong stylistic flair to the movements and gesture

I think this movie planted the idea of a movie can be 3D but doesn't need to be 3rd dimensional. While working on a project I went through the movie on frames because I realized some of the comic panel frames would be amazing for wallpapers. I thought those frames look and feel like an artist drew them and then inserted them which creates the feeling of flipping through a comic but saw that the other frames have a similar feel of being doodled on and the way they blended in the smash effects were similar to how a child would read a comic and insert their "pows" and "wams". This meaning even though the film was in 3D it had a 2D layer on top of it where they could place the iconic comic popups and make the film more dynamic and stylized in a comic book format.

I remember hearing in a video that said something to this effect Animation, like all other types of tv and film medium, is treated like an investment by the people who green lights these projects, they don’t want to spend money on a project only for it to flop financially. This means that before Spider-verse, these people would heavily encourage “make the film look realistic, realism sells”. Then Spider-verse comes along, these higher ups at Sony decided that “Spider-man sells, he’s popular in the MCU, he sells lots of merchandise, feel free to experiment”. So the crew behind Spider-verse did just that. And now, after seeing the success of Spider-verse, other companies are going “you know what? Maybe animated films don’t have to look realistic, copying Spider-verse’s animation style might even make animated films look more appealing to audiences”.

Honestly, Across the Spider-Verse is my most hyped movie of 2023. Not just because I freak'n love Spider-Man or because I'm excited to see Mayday Parker finally on the big screen (which make no mistake, that's a good 50% of why I'm pumped), but as an animation fan. I love that Sony and DreamWorks are finally following this movie's example and making their animated movies feel more cartoony than ever. Now I just wish Disney would catch up, cuz it's hard seeing the house founded on animation not even try. For now though, HOLY CRAP AM I SO EXCTED FOR THIS MOVIE!! I can't wait to see all the different artstyles they implement, or how Miguel O'Hara's brash attitude will conflict with Miles, or how Miles's relationship with Gwen will develop, or how Peter B. will handle being a dad, or if Spectacular Spider-Man really makes a cameo like one poster suggested. Ugh, I NEED THIS MOVIE NOW!

Just saw Puss in Boots 2 and it was gorgeous and very well written. It looks like a fairy tale book and the artists' concept art come to life. I see the obvious inspiration from Spiderverse, but it has its own take. Disney whored itself to 3d and one specific look that got bland real quick. I'm glad studios like Sony, Dreamworks and Fortiche (studio behind Leage of Legends' Arcane) are doing such creative work, bringing magic that only animation can inspire

After watching this movie for the first time, I knew it was special. My first impressions going in were "I'm gonna be so out of touch with this film or that it's just gonna appeal to a younger audience with unnecessary pop culture (thanks Emoji Movie)" or "Ok so this is the hero's story. I've heard it all before that I could literally write it on a napkin". But for some reason, the animation made this story somewhat both new and nostalgic. What I got was an amazing product created by a bunch of people who had a lot of fun with every frame and movement. My favorite part of the animation is specifically the expressions of the characters (so full of life and emotion). It made animation not a genre, it made animation a medium of telling a good story, as Brad Bird would say.

Realism != Good Art Favreau's *Lion King* is a technical marvel, the technology that was developed for that movie was astounding, every hair on Simba's body individually has more polygons than 2B's ass, the characters rigs *precisely* model and follow the constraints of real-world zoological anatomy and yet... Moments after Mufasa dies, and Simba looks up and realizes that he's about to be trampled to death by wildebeest as they're stampeding into the gorge... The shot looks like a picture taken of a real world lion cub that's watching a bird flit around on tree branches dozens of feet away. It's like they were so scared to be called "an animation," that the characters don't have any _animation_ at all!

If we're talking about other studios trying to 'replicate' its style in their movies, it so easily could've been a situation of them trying to knock off Spiderverse with little substance. But I've been pleasantly surprised so far to find that those movies have great substance of their own and not only feel like engaging dramedies, but beautifully creative movies as well that drove me in. For that reason, I'm absolutely here for Spiderverse's effect being legendary, because so far, it's done nothing but made animated movies better.

i dont think animated 3d movies have ever tried to replicate the real world, but there has been a change since spiderverse, i think a good example of this is The Bad Guys, it has a similar animation style, with lots of exaggeration in the movements another movie that has adopted this sort of style is Turning Red, which is obvious in the facial animations, the only 3D animated movie that i think truely tried to imitate the real world is probably Rango

I think 2 movies, like Lego, that each differently helped to pave for Spiderverse and modern 3d movies are Peanuts movie and Hotel Transylvania. The 1st showed that current animators and tools could make very stylized 3d, and big studios had will to spend on it in a big IP. The 2nd showed that animation shouldn't just be grounded/held back and it can be more dynamic using what Genndy learned in 2d cartoons. Speaking of Genndy, my dream project is him adapting One Piece using the teams from Spiderverse and a good budget. His mastery/appreciation of action, Japanese media, and cartoon goofiness paired with the artists' talents to stylishly convey comics would give its best version outside the manga. IMO there's unused potential but in reality the only IPs allowed to have cartoons are niche-established manga, but eventually a capable animation studio with enough clout can get rights to something.

I am so glad this movie is made. Not only was it just a good movie, but it set a standard for Western Animation. That the audience likes a more mature story with good visuals (it isn't rated R or anything, but it is a more mature film than anything Illumination dumps out), and those visuals make my inner artist feel things. Its thanks to Spiderverse that we get things like Bad Guys and the recent Puss in Boots movies, which take pages from the Spiderverse playbook, and prove even more that people like this. That it was good. I can't wait to see what the actual creative minds of Hollywood can come with given this knowledge, whether its Spiderverse 2 (which I don't remember when I was this excited to see a movie in theaters), or something we don't know about yet.
